Actually a comment on the five years that my stepfather has lived at Saxonwood, sadly dying one month short of his 95th birthday. In fact, looking at the first instance, it was March 16th five years ago it became home, and a wonderful, if not ideal, one, which he grew into, with friends and warmth,
among staff and fellow residents, and good food (mealtimes always his favourite time of day), a full day of activity. He adjusted to not being at home, and became alive in a way after being at home by himself for some years. I think we can only be enormously grateful to you all and to those who strongly endorsed the choice. Heartfelt thanks.
Reply from Lizzie Gurr, Marketing & Communications Officer at SaxonwoodThank you for your wonderful review and we enjoyed the five years where your stepfather was part of our Saxonwood family, along with your visits. We appreciate and understand whole heartedly that moving to a care home can be an anxious and stressful time for some people, and sometimes it's a decision that is hard to make. However, as we often find, when people move to Saxonwood they thrive - enjoying the delicious home cooked food, the variety of activities and social interactions with fellow residents and staff - a real boost to their mental health and wellbeing. Again, thank you for your kind comments and please do visit again in the future.

Saxonwood is such a high quality care home. I have nothing but praise for the way they are caring for my Auntie. At a very stressful time, Saxonwood have been a huge comfort to my Auntie and to our family.

Good solid care from friendly staff. Group activities available if you want them, good range of food with regular specials. Homely feel to the place, you're not isolated and there is always some activity going on. Staff do a good job of fancy dress on the odd occasion! Edge-of-town location at the end
of a side-street means low traffic, easy access for emergency services. Good car park for visitors

Saxonwood is an excellent home with caring, committed staff. Meals are varied and nutritious and chefs are well aware of residents' likes and dislikes. The care my friend gets is second to none. Rooms are well-kept and very clean. Staff at Saxonwood are unfailingly kind and compassionate, and I would
not hesitate to recommend Saxonwood to anyone seeking care for a friend or relative. Saxonwood is really a home from home.

This is a lovely, homely, and well-maintained care home surrounded by beautiful gardens. The staff are so welcoming and the management of the home is excellent. My Mum has advanced dementia, but she seems content, is very well cared for, and enjoys her food! She clearly likes the staff, who work hard
to make her feel comfortable and included. I really appreciate the relatives' meetings to keep us informed, and an excellent training session run by the Activities Manager to better understand dementia. I love the way that Saxonwood encourages other groups from the Battle community to engage with the residents - such as a very enjoyable intergenerational art session with local playgroup, primary and secondary school children held recently. Communal areas have recently been redecorated to a high standard, and the layout of the bright, comfortable lounge thoughtfully redesigned to facilitate a range of activities, rest and conversation. I am very happy that Mum is living at Saxonwood.

My mother( who has been a resident in Saxonwood for almost thirteen years) recently celebrated her 100th birthday. I had originally booked a local restaurant for a gathering of family and friends, but the venue cancelled this a week later. As it transpired, this was highly fortuitous, because the team
at Saxonwood stepped in and accommodated us all.
The level of service and quality of food were beyond what we would have otherwise received and the care and attention lavished upon us all was incomparable.
Every member of staff, whatever their role, made everyone feel so welcome, for which I am eternally grateful.
Special thanks to chef and her brigade!
Reply from Lizzie Gurr, Marketing & Communications Officer at SaxonwoodThank you for your wonderful 5* review. We're pleased you all had a wonderful time and made memories together on a very special day.

The Saxonwood staff are always polite and have smiles on their faces and in their voices on the phone whenever I telephone or visit which makes for a lovely atmosphere and community. My uncle is offered daily activities to participate in covering a good range of interests and helping to promote health
e.g. chair exercise sessions. He has his own space to retreat to when he feels like it and that overlooks a lovely garden area. I am very happy that my uncle is getting good care and seems to be thriving better than when he was at home alone.

From making our first contact through to Mum moving in and staying over the last months I have felt confident that Saxonwood was the best choice of care home for Mum. All the staff is caring, professional, and well trained and put the residents at the centre of all they do, this includes the catering,
maintenance, housekeeping, activities, and management teams as well as the carers. The residents are offered a nutritious and varied choice of food each day. The activities program excels and leans towards a variety of subjects including music, entertainment, spiritual, nature, craft, reminiscing, quizzes, gardening, and much more. The care I have observed is always professional, respectful, and done with dignity. The resident's rooms are kept clean and well-maintained. When visiting, I am always welcomed and never restricted and I find myself being able to enjoy time with Mum rather than worrying about her - that is down to the Saxonwood team and for which I am truly thankful.

Saxonwood is extremely well run and the staff are without exception kind, caring, professional and friendly. The home is set in nice gardens at the end of a private road and the lounge and dining room are bright and sunny. It is always really clean and well-maintained. There are twice-daily activities
which reflect the seasons and topical events - a lot of effort goes into this which many residents really appreciate. The food is freshly prepared, of a high standard and caters to all tastes and diets. There is excellent communication between the staff who are always well informed and they work as a great team. It is very difficult placing a loved one into a care home and I am so pleased we found Saxonwood. My mother has lived here for a year now and I am extremely grateful to all of the dedicated staff who take such good care of her.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.806)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.806) out of 10 for Saxonwood is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.881 for Saxonwood is calculated as follows: ( (177 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 201 Ratings = 4.881
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Saxonwood is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager Joined: 2014

I started at Saxonwood as a Care Assistant in 2014, and a year later, with the support of my team and manager, I became a Senior Care Assistant. I was in this role for five years. I've been able to upskill myself, and with support and training from Sussex Housing & Care, I've progressed to being the Deputy Manager, and since October 2025, I have been fortunate to be the Care Home Manager at Saxonwood.

I love working at Saxonwood, it's a brilliant home where we put residents at the heart of everything we do. We have lots of fun with residents and their families, and I enjoy making a difference to the daily life and well-being of our residents.

I was attracted to working for Sussex Housing & Care because it felt homely, bright and friendly at Saxonwood. I find working with older people incredibly interesting, finding out all about their life stories and careers.

I have a background in administration, as previously I worked as an administrator at The Priory in Heathfield, and since joining Saxonwood as the care home administrator, I have also gained experience as a Care Assistant and have studied a City & Guilds Diploma in Business Administration. I work closely with Roxi to lead our team, and Saxonwood is like a big family. We have fun together, and it’s a brilliant place to work. I look forward to coming in!

Job Title: Chef Manager Joined: 2021

I qualified as a chef over 30 years ago and have worked in many different roles within catering, including as a bakery-trained confectioner, dietary needs chef, Head Chef, Head of Catering and Chef Manager. I am also qualified to teach food safety, nutrition, and dietary needs from the CIEH. I was also a home care worker for two years, and so I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to my role as Chef Manager at Saxonwood.

The job I do plays a major role at Saxonwood as food and hospitality are always a highlight of our residents' day. I have enjoyed taking part in activities, planning, preparing, and producing food and drinks for events, getting to know the residents, receiving good feedback and implementing new menus. I feel privileged to work with a great team both in and out of the kitchen, producing food that looks as good as it tastes and is enjoyed by all.
