My mother has been in Saxonwood since October 2020. They were very helpful right from our first phone call to them. They emailed us a brochure which was very informative as we could not go into the building to view it due to COVID-19. The manager made a point of meeting us to look around outside. Mum
seems to be very happy here she joins in with many of the activities the staff arrange. She really enjoys their wonderful menu and is very well fed. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful.

My mother spent the last two years of her life at Saxonwood. She was always a very independent woman, enjoyed living on her own and her greatest fear as she got older was that she should have to move into a nursing home. After breaking each hip in two separate falls it became evident that Mum could
no longer live on her own and we visited a lot of care homes in the Battle area before deciding that Saxonwood was best-suited to her. Despite her fears, Mum settled into life in the care-home immediately and she felt safe, cared for and happy. I usually visited her twice a week and during that time I got to know a lot of the staff and also some of the residents. All the staff were really really good including catering staff, cleaners and care workers. They were always patient with Mum and were very professional and hard working. I was always amazed that they managed to do such a hard job whilst consistently maintaining a happy friendly atmosphere. I give the Saxonwood team an A*.

I have made many friends at Saxonwood and enjoyed my time over Christmas. I have been coming here each day over Christmas and the staff have done their best to give all a good time. The Christmas tree reached nearly to the ceiling in the dining room and was a picture with its lights on and decorations
around it. The tallest man in the room had to stand on a chair in order to reach the top of the tree to place the star. It was majestic.

I have been visiting a resident for over 2 years. The atmosphere is always calm, friendly, clean and well decorated with no odours. The staff are always polite and helpful and evidently caring. The manager is always around and has a good friendly hands-on approach. Overall, I have found the home to
be above standard one expects in a home like this and I have seen the manger grow in her role and this bodes well for its future. I have a great deal of respect for the staff in often trying situations.

On entering Saxonwood I was disappointed with the lack of people with whom I might communicate. I now plough my own furrow - do exercises, play scrabble, have my hair 'done' regularly and endeavour to attend the entertainment which I might like - not many!
The staff are absolutely wonderful, in fact,
were it not for them, I don't know what I'd do - no one with whom to have a laugh!

My mother-in-law resided in this care home some seven years ago. At that time, the home was defined by a beautiful, loving-kindness. Nothing has changed.
My experience of the staff here is that they are beautifully sweet, loving and so very helpful. I felt safe here, loved and respected. Their response
to me in so many ways was healing and comforting after a very difficult illness. I cannot praise this care home highly enough.

My father returned to the care home from being in hospital where he was very poorly and very agitated. As soon as he arrived back in his room he was immediately relaxed and content. The carers went out of their way to make him extremely comfortable, washing him and dressing him and hoisting him into
his chair. When I visited him in the afternoon he was completely relaxed and happy. Over the next few weeks, before he died, he was cared for by the fantastic staff and my sister and I will always be extremely grateful.
Saxonwood is an exceptional home and I would recommend it to anyone looking to find a caring home for their relative.

Caring and cheerful staff who are giving a valuable service which is underrated by society in often challenging circumstances. It is always easy to contact the home with any queries and speak to someone. A good range of services visit the residents eg. chiropodist, hairdresser etc.

After only living at Saxonwood a couple of months, my Grandmother has settled in extremely well. All of the staff have been extremely welcoming and made sure my Gran is comfortable and happy. They attend to all her needs and says that she feels very comfortable and at ease when having assistance with
more personal hygiene matters, which is always something she has worried about in her elderly age. The building and gardens are all well kept and extremely clean and tidy. Great choice on the menus and food is good quality. Great social activities to suit all.

My father aged 94 suffered a fall. Paramedics advised he was bruised but we couldn't manage at home so I rang Saxonwood who found a beautiful big room for him overlooking the garden and countryside. He was admitted the same afternoon. We were met with kindness and compassion. Dad was in great pain but
the staff helped him, found him a comfortable chair and air mattress and cheered him up. He loved the home cooked food. They also called the GP to check him out and found he had a broken hip and sent him to hospital.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.806)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.806) out of 10 for Saxonwood is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.881 for Saxonwood is calculated as follows: ( (177 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 201 Ratings = 4.881
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Saxonwood is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager Joined: 2014

I started at Saxonwood as a Care Assistant in 2014, and a year later, with the support of my team and manager, I became a Senior Care Assistant. I was in this role for five years. I've been able to upskill myself, and with support and training from Sussex Housing & Care, I've progressed to being the Deputy Manager, and since October 2025, I have been fortunate to be the Care Home Manager at Saxonwood.

I love working at Saxonwood, it's a brilliant home where we put residents at the heart of everything we do. We have lots of fun with residents and their families, and I enjoy making a difference to the daily life and well-being of our residents.

Job Title: Deputy Care Home Manager Joined: 2022

I was attracted to working for Sussex Housing & Care because it felt homely, bright and friendly at Saxonwood. I find working with older people incredibly interesting, finding out all about their life stories and careers.

I have a background in administration, as previously I worked as an administrator at The Priory in Heathfield, and since joining Saxonwood as the care home administrator, I have also gained experience as a Care Assistant and have studied a City & Guilds Diploma in Business Administration. I work closely with Roxi to lead our team, and Saxonwood is like a big family. We have fun together, and it’s a brilliant place to work. I look forward to coming in!

Job Title: Chef Manager Joined: 2021

I qualified as a chef over 30 years ago and have worked in many different roles within catering, including as a bakery-trained confectioner, dietary needs chef, Head Chef, Head of Catering and Chef Manager. I am also qualified to teach food safety, nutrition, and dietary needs from the CIEH. I was also a home care worker for two years, and so I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to my role as Chef Manager at Saxonwood.

The job I do plays a major role at Saxonwood as food and hospitality are always a highlight of our residents' day. I have enjoyed taking part in activities, planning, preparing, and producing food and drinks for events, getting to know the residents, receiving good feedback and implementing new menus. I feel privileged to work with a great team both in and out of the kitchen, producing food that looks as good as it tastes and is enjoyed by all.
