Overall Experience

Saxonwood is extremely well run and the staff are without exception kind, caring, professional and friendly. The home is set in nice gardens at the end of a private road and the lounge and dining room are bright and sunny. It is always really clean and well-maintained. There are twice-daily activities which reflect the seasons and topical events - a lot of effort goes into this which many residents really appreciate. The food is freshly prepared, of a high standard and caters to all tastes and diets. There is excellent communication between the staff who are always well informed and they work as a great team. It is very difficult placing a loved one into a care home and I am so pleased we found Saxonwood. My mother has lived here for a year now and I am extremely grateful to all of the dedicated staff who take such good care of her.

My mother has been living at Saxonwood for almost four years now and I am delighted with the standard of care. Saxonwood has an absolutely wonderful team of friendly and caring staff. Standards of cleanliness and hygiene are outstanding and my mother always says that the food is excellent. The management team are wonderful and it is always easy to speak to one of them if I need to. They are great at communicating with relatives, always keeping us informed of any news and sending us the weekly list of activities. They also maintain a relatives social media page and post photos every day, which is always lovely to see. I am hugely grateful to all the team at Saxonwood and I have never doubted that I made the right choice when I chose a care home for my mother. I would highly recommend Saxonwood to anyone looking for a care home in the area.

I have found the care for my brother and his wife to be excellent. The carers, medical assistants and management team are very dedicated and treat the residents as though they were their own family. The food is excellent and well thought out and different activities take place daily.

My dad has lived happily at Saxonwood for nearly three years. I am confident that he is very well cared for and am grateful to all the staff at Saxonwood. His room is comfortable and always very clean. Dad enjoys all the meals - the food is excellent. I appreciate being able to visit at anytime and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. There are many varied activities for residents and visitors to participate in. Dad looks forward to the regular church services held in the lounge. We have also enjoyed the special family events - garden party, barbecue, art workshops. This year, the Saxonwood team gave Dad a wonderful 100th birthday party, which the family were able to attend. I am so pleased I chose Saxonwood for Dad and we really feel part of the Saxonwood ‘family’. Thank you.

My mother moved into Saxonwood Residential Care Home in March 2023, having spent the previous nine weeks in hospital. While in hospital, Mum seemed to have given up on life and looked very weak and lethargic. My brother and I have seen a vast improvement in Mum since her move to Saxonwood. She now looks much healthier and happier. Although she seems to be reliving her much younger days a lot of the time, she also appears to be taking an interest in what is going on around her and I'm sure the staff and various activities have been a big influence in her improved health and motor skills. Being around other people has also been beneficial, as Mum had been stuck at home on her own for a few years. Having been a keen gardener, she also loves the view from her room and being taken out in the garden in her wheelchair.

Mum moved to Saxonwood in March 2022. The fact she refers to it as 'home' says it all and she loves her room, which looks out over the local school. Her care is exemplary, nothing is too much trouble. The staff are hardworking, professional, always willing to help out and a smile is never far away. Mum's care has been second to none. Management are superb, I am always kept up to date if there have been any issues, or anything that needs discussing. It is so reassuring to know she is safe and well cared for. The host of activities are varied, having also included projects with local schools, a great opportunity for old and young to get to know each other. There is also a lovely range of family-orientated events that are regularly put on and the accessible gardens are lovely. The menu is varied and the food is extremely good and takes Mum's food intolerances into account. She keeps telling me what a great job my husband and I did to find Saxonwood and, I have to say, I totally agree!

Dad is very well cared for. The staff are always kind, helpful and jolly. Dad says they are very pleasant. The staff are very responsive if there is an issue which needs attention. The food is excellent, good home cooking! Dad really enjoys his cooked breakfast at the weekend. The activities are fun, creative and engaging, one mand in particular is excellent and all his activities are well attended. Lovely to have a visiting dog Angus as Dad loves dogs. Very sweet of the lady to take Dad to the 'chillout' room for a hand massage. Thank you.

My father had previously been proudly independent but now needs 24/7 care due to extreme old age. He tried it for a week but didn't want to go back home again. From the manager, admin, carers, kitchen staff, and cleaners through to maintenance, all are kind, sensitive, caring and always with a smile. Guests are welcome at any time. The grounds are lovely, and the facilities are very pleasant and I have the peace of mind that my dad is safe, warm, well fed and getting the 24/7 professional teamwork care I would find impossible to provide on my own. A big, big thank you for taking a huge worry off my mind.

The staff work extremely hard, but always have a smile and are friendly, courteous and caring. They have been patient and kind during the difficult "settling in" time while my parents adjusted to leaving their home and moving into care. My parents especially enjoy the food at Saxonwood and the lovely outdoor space too!

I didn't want to go into a care home, but my daughter found this one, and it's like a holiday home. I had been shut in my house for two years, dreading Covid-19, but here there are no worries about it! The helpers work hard all the time but sometimes can make a space for a chat. I had a new lease of life coming here and did (with some help) a 500-word jigsaw, embroidering and knitting. There are activity groups every day and special meals for mothers, daughters and families etc.

Very friendly and helpful staff.
Good effort to organise activities, especially exercise sessions.
Food imaginative.
Pity supper has to be at 5 pm or 5.30 pm, but this is understandable for staff.

Would recommend.

Thanks for your brilliant review. We try and be as flexible as possible to meet our residents' needs and welcome residents to eat either in our dining room (which many do and is a very social time) or in their room. I welcome you or your loved one to speak to Sigita, our care home manager, about preferred timings, and we will do all we can to accommodate this.

My mother came to live at Saxonwood in November 2020. Moving in during a pandemic was not easy, but the staff went out of their way to make the process as smooth as possible. We were greeted by happy, smiling faces - and this continues. All staff show an extremely caring and sensitive attitude, treating everyone with dignity, and this includes managers too, who are very "hands-on"! They are all prepared to go "the extra mile". There is always an interesting activity to enjoy at everyone's own level. I have particularly appreciated the support given to my mother and myself. Staff always have time to talk or return a phone call and have kept me regularly updated between visits. It is so reassuring to know that my mother is safe and very well cared for. I would have no hesitation in recommending Saxonwood to anyone.

Roxi VargalutaJob Title:Care Home ManagerJoined: 2014

I started at Saxonwood as a Care Assistant in 2014, and a year later, with the support of my team and manager, I became a Senior Care Assistant. I was in this role for five years. I've been able to upskill myself, and with support and training from Sussex Housing & Care, I've progressed to being the Deputy Manager, and since October 2025, I have been fortunate to be the Care Home Manager at Saxonwood.

I love working at Saxonwood, it's a brilliant home where we put residents at the heart of everything we do. We have lots of fun with residents and their families, and I enjoy making a difference to the daily life and well-being of our residents.

Sandra Everley
Sandra EverleyJob Title:Deputy Care Home ManagerJoined: 2022

I was attracted to working for Sussex Housing & Care because it felt homely, bright and friendly at Saxonwood. I find working with older people incredibly interesting, finding out all about their life stories and careers.

I have a background in administration, as previously I worked as an administrator at The Priory in Heathfield, and since joining Saxonwood as the care home administrator, I have also gained experience as a Care Assistant and have studied a City & Guilds Diploma in Business Administration. I work closely with Roxi to lead our team, and Saxonwood is like a big family. We have fun together, and it’s a brilliant place to work. I look forward to coming in!

Tracie Wilson
Tracie WilsonJob Title:Chef ManagerJoined: 2021

I qualified as a chef over 30 years ago and have worked in many different roles within catering, including as a bakery-trained confectioner, dietary needs chef, Head Chef, Head of Catering and Chef Manager. I am also qualified to teach food safety, nutrition, and dietary needs from the CIEH. I was also a home care worker for two years, and so I bring a lot of experience and knowledge to my role as Chef Manager at Saxonwood.

The job I do plays a major role at Saxonwood as food and hospitality are always a highlight of our residents' day. I have enjoyed taking part in activities, planning, preparing, and producing food and drinks for events, getting to know the residents, receiving good feedback and implementing new menus. I feel privileged to work with a great team both in and out of the kitchen, producing food that looks as good as it tastes and is enjoyed by all.
