I recently visited my elderly uncle at the Martlets East Preston and was reassured that he was being well looked after. Please thank all staff for their dedication care and patience in looking after the elderly residents. It cannot be easy but all the time I was there I never heard an unkind word
spoken and the staff were always friendly happy and helpful.

Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.503)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.503) out of 10 for The Martlets is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.528 for The Martlets is calculated as follows: ( (186 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (14 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 246 Ratings = 4.528
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Martlets is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Service Manager Joined: 2005

I have worked with Shaw Healthcare since 2005. I started my career as a carer and have been lucky enough to be developed into the Service Manager role I hold today. I have worked in many Shaw Healthcare homes across the region and have over 15 years of experience in the care field. I absolutely love my job!

We have an amazing team at The Martlets and we are very proud of our ‘Martlets Family’ culture. The Martlets provides a warm homely environment, with a caring, kind-hearted, compassionate skilled team of staff.

No two days are the same in care, but every day is rewarding in its own way. Seeing smiles on faces, hearing laughter through our home and being able to support people when they need it most is what makes it a pleasure to go to work, each and every day.

My name is Hayley I have worked for Shaw health care since 2007. My first role with Shaw was as a kitchen assistant when I was 17. My next role was as a care assistant when I turned 18.

At 25 I became a team leader and embraced the responsibility and oversaw that my staff promoted the best quality person-centred care for our residents the way we all wish our own loved ones would receive.

At 31 I was given the opportunity to progress further within the company and I now am privileged to be “The Martlets Deputy Manager.” We have a beautiful home here at The Martlets and are lucky to be situated right near the beach.

I am very proud to work at The Martlets we have a fantastic team and there is a wonderful energy about the home. Every day is a joy at The Martlets.

I have worked at The Martlets since Feb 2019, starting as a Bank Support Worker. I enjoyed it so much that I chose to join full time and then worked up into the Team Leader role in June 2021.
I find the team and residents alike to be fantastic. There is always laughter to be heard and my team and management are always really supportive.
In June 2022 I was nominated for a Shaw Star award in the Wellness, Happiness and Kindness Category and attended the Regional Awards Ceremony.
With Shaw being an employee owned company we as staff have more influence over change and also receive some nice bonuses, which is great!

I am Steve, I have come from a predominantly retail background, from flipping burgers to stacking shelves to running my own stores.

After some deliberation and my staff saying that I would be good in care, in May 2016 I took the plunge into the world of care. Filled with trepidation, I started as a care worker at The Martlets and found it to be the most satisfying and rewarding job I have taken on. My favourite part was the ability to put a smile on our resident's faces and empower them to be as independent as possible.

2 years on and I was given the opportunity to become a Team Leader, which includes ensuring the timely administration of medication and liaising with medical professionals, to help promote the health and well-being of our residents.

2022 Presented an opportunity to work in Administration at the front of the house. This has enabled me to learn about the “back end” of care. Finances, Rota Management, Orders, admissions/discharges and most importantly taking relative calls and enquiries, liaising with all the teams of The Martlets to resolve these calls.
I am grateful to the current Martlets management for helping me progress within the home and would urge those thinking of working in care to take “The Plunge” just as I did!

I started at The Martlets in 2012 as a bank support worker following on from being made redundant as an apprentice hairdresser. From the moment I walked into the building I knew that care was the job for me and within days I applied to become a full-time career.

I loved my role, providing high-quality care to our residents and daily activities. In 2016 I took the plunge to apply for the team leader role that became available within The Martlets.

Becoming a team leader at 23 was a huge achievement for me, I had not long returned from maternity leave and was extremely proud of my achievements within the company.

In 2020 I was given the amazing opportunity of becoming The Martlets Deputy Manager, being part of The Martlets family since 2012 has developed my career in many ways, the knowledge and experience Shaw has given me is incredible. Watching The Martlets grow is an amazing opportunity and I am forever grateful for The Martlets.
