Alex Wood House is a pleasant and welcoming environment, well staffed by efficient management and carers who provide appropriate care to the resident I visit regularly. The home is well maintained and always very clean. This all gives great reassurance to relatives and friends.

This was my husbands first respite stay and I have to say I was very nervous and worried about it! I chose Alex Wood House as I was recommended it for its caring staff, I think this was evident from the start! We were welcomed and settled in. I kept in touch by phone and was always reassured that he was fine without glossing over his more challenging moments! This may not be the most glamorous of homes but if you are looking for a "home from home" this could be it!

My Stepdad moved into Alexwood House in Sep 25. It was a really difficult decision to make but his alzheimers esp. at night time was becoming harder for my mum to manage. It'd be fair enough to say that it wasn't a happy decision for us. I visited Alexwood House and chatted to Lance and the Manager, Julie who showed us round and let us choose what was initially a respite room. He took a while to settle but immediately we observed better medical attention which he wasn't getting from his local GP. The staff are kind and the rooms are very clean. The home puts on a number of activities for residents to enjoy with Jan happily doing his bit. He has a good appetite and the meals are always good.

The staff are also kind to my mum when she visits each week and we enjoy a chat with them and the other residents. We acknowledge that the scheme isnt the most modern but when you're paying for care, finding a home with consistent staffing and kindness count.

My dad quickly settled into AWH as a permanent resident. It's welcoming and homely and staff are super friendly and professional. They are always emphasising that this is their home, and positively encourage feedback and suggestions. I would 100% recommend to anyone considering care for their loved one.

My husband stayed for a week of respite care. He said he enjoyed the food and the bingo. I was reassured that all was well when I contacted the home and was told to contact as often as I needed to. He was calm and happy when I went to collect him and was in no hurry to leave. The first respite stay was a challenge for me but I'm sure I will be more relaxed during future stays.

Reply from Bernadette Burr, Deputy Manager at Alex Wood House

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're glad your husband enjoyed the food and bingo, and that you felt reassured during his stay. Its completely natural to find the first respite visit challenging, and were pleased he was happy and comfortable. We look forward to welcoming him again.

My parents have been in Alex Wood House for 3 months. I can say that all the staff have been incredible with caring for them both!
I visit several times a week and got to know the staff. They make my parents feel calm and cared for. My mom gets to go out shopping and is quite independant. She can be herself and can talk to staff with a smile!

My dad has had more care than Mom do to his confusion but he has settled down a lot better! Mom comes down to see dad and spend time together.

Alexwood House is a lovely home, all staff seem very friendly and obliging, the home is always lovely and clean, although it could do with redecorating in places. In Joseph's room, the ceiling needs to be sorted as it looks as though there has been a leak! And part of the ceiling is brown.

My husband and I spent two weeks in respite care at Alex Wood House . We were only booked for one week but my husband had a foot infection and we had to go to the hospital three times in the first week which was stressful. We asked if we could stay for another week and fortunately we were able to do so.
The staff were all excellent, kind and efficient and seemed happy at work which is a sign of a well run establishment
There were plenty of activities available and I enjoyed Pottery and a visit from farm animals. particularly. The food is good and there is always a choice.
I was able to relax and enjoy my stay knowing that my husband was in good hands
The admin manager, Lance and the manager Julie were very kind and helpful with all arrangements,.

I would certainly book further respite stays if possible and would recommend Alex Wood House to anyone considering long term care for loved ones.

Ryan Palmer-FennyJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2026

Hello, my name is Ryan, and I am the Home Manager here at Alex Wood House in Cambridge.

Caring for others has always been a significant part of both my professional and personal life. Several members of my family have worked in care homes and care services, and my own journey began straight after college when I achieved my Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care. I started my career at the very same care home where I had completed voluntary work, and it was there that I discovered my passion for helping others and ensuring people receive the compassionate, person-centred care they deserve.

Supporting my grandfather when he needed additional care also gave me invaluable insight from a family’s perspective. It reinforced my commitment to treating every resident with the same kindness, dignity and respect that I would want for my own loved ones.

Throughout my career, I have gained experience across many areas of the care sector, beginning as a Care Assistant before progressing to Team Leader, Deputy Manager and Home Manager. Working alongside residents, families and healthcare professionals has strengthened my belief that exceptional care is built on meaningful relationships, compassion and truly person-centred support.

As a qualified Skills Assessor, I am passionate about developing our team and creating a culture of continuous learning. By investing in our colleagues, we continue to build on the excellent care already provided at Alex Wood House, delivering the highest standards of residential and dementia care for residents, their families and the wider Cambridge community.

At Alex Wood House, my team and I are dedicated to providing outstanding residential and dementia care in a warm, welcoming environment where every resident feels valued, respected and truly at home. We understand that choosing a care home is an important decision, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

We look forward to welcoming you to Alex Wood House. If you have any questions or would like to find out more about our home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I will always do my very best to support you and your family in any way I can.

Hello, my name is Bernie, and I am the Deputy Manager here at Alex Wood House.

Caring for elderly people has always been close to my heart from an early age. My mum worked in domiciliary care, and when I joined Alex Wood House as a Care Assistant at 18 years old, I knew this was my calling in life. Throughout the years at the home, I have obtained my NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care and Leadership and Management - and am currently studying for my Level 5 Diploma too.

After nearly 20 years at the home, I have progressed from Senior Care Assistant to Lead Practitioner and now Deputy Manager. In my role, I fully appreciate my responsibility to all our residents, their families, and our wider community.

I am extremely proud to help lead such an amazing team and to continually strive for the highest standards, ensuring that our residents receive outstanding, person-centred care every single day. Memory Care is a particular passion of mine, and I am dedicated to enabling those living with dementia at Alex Wood House to continue living fulfilled lives, especially through our tailored Lifestyles Programme.

There is very much a family feel at Alex Wood House, which is often commented on. As a smaller home, this is something many residents and families truly appreciate. Please do come and see us — it would be wonderful to meet you, and I will do my best to support you in any way I can.
