Nestled in a quiet residential area of Norwich and just a short distance away from the city centre, MHA Cromwell House is a residential care home providing specialist care for 38 residents. The home was built in 1969 and thoughtfully expanded over the years, Cromwell House combines modern comforts intertwined with local history.

The landscaped gardens aren’t just a backdrop - they’re at the heart of life at the home. Enclosed and beautifully maintained, the outdoor spaces invite residents to relax, explore, and connect with nature. Wildlife, including foxes and squirrels, adds a magical touch, while colourful flowerbeds and shaded seating areas provide perfect spots for morning coffee or an afternoon chat. The summer house is a favourite gathering place, hosting everything from garden parties to quiet tea breaks with family. For those who prefer the indoors, the conservatory offers beautiful garden views, making it a peaceful retreat even on cooler days.

Cromwell House features cosy en-suite bedrooms, welcoming communal lounges, and even a chapel for moments of quiet reflection. Everyone enjoys a bit of pampering in the hair salon and socialising over tea in the conservatory. The activity calendar is packed with events that bring residents together, from competitive carpet bowling matches to lively singalongs. Visiting entertainers and performers bring extra energy to the home, while day trips to places like Yarmouth Sea Life Centre or Norfolk Broads boat rides offer excitement and exploration.

From intergenerational activities with local children to moments of calm in the chapel or quite areas, Cromwell House offers a balance of vibrancy and calmness where every resident is treated like family. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for short stays or residential care, the team at Cromwell House are here to help.

Spending 6 weeks in Cromwell House after leaving hospital to recover from a broken hip. From day one I was given first class treatment & I could not have asked for more. Everybody helped me to get back on my feet. I am 90 years old & I was given the most wonderful time whist in Cromwell House. My 102
year old mother spent 6 years in Cromwell House so I knew the wonderful care I would be given. Fantastic staff.

Lovely, friendly care home where mum's needs are met with patience, compassion and respect. Staff are always helpful, with a smile on their faces.
Mum is treated with dignity at all times. She is happy and is starting to make friends. She enjoys the activities and the 'social scene'.
A lot of weight
is taken off my shoulders as I know she is safe and being well looked after.
Reply from Jennifer Howes, Home Manager at Cromwell HouseThank you so much for your lovely review and your kind words regarding our amazing team. We are really pleased that your mum is settling in well and that you can relax knowing that she is in good, safe hands.

Internet v. poor
Music therapy only suitable for some.
I have had a stroke and can only use left hand so cannot do many crafts. I enjoy painting and use of desk in conservatory. I love the garden and views.

Everyone is always very pleasant when we visit. In this modern day and age, I don't think the rooms are very satisfactory, and they are not en suite as the web site says they are. There is only a shower in the extension rooms, not the majority of the rooms.

Our Mother was a resident at Cromwell House for the last year of her life. She settled into life at Cromwell very well and appreciated the kindness and patience of the staff. She enjoyed the activities and learned carpet bow Mum loved to chat with other people and always found someone to talk to if
she felt lonely. The staff were so helpful in meeting all her needs. Mum gradually deteriorated and the staff ensured she was always comfortable and pain-free. She died with great dignity and the staff were so attentive - they could not have had better care.

My Mother was a resident for 17 months and did not want to leave Cromwell House at the end of her life and go to a hospital or hospice. She was happy and felt secure and valued there. I visited at all hours, in the day and at occasions at night without notice, the welcome was warm and my Mother was
settled and truly engaged with the activities and the informal service. My Mother was of sound mind and would certainly have complained if anything was a miss!
The expertise and compassion shown, particularly by the night carers, at the end of her life were so important to us. She was treated with respect, even after death.

My mother stayed at Cromwell House for six weeks for recovery from surgery. She was extremely well looked after. Neither she, nor the family, have any complaints – indeed the opposite. The staff were very kind and patient. The few health problems which arose during her stay were dealt with very quickly.
She reports the food was delicious. The car park, community space and garden made visiting easy.

Staff are always so happy and friendly. Always making me feel welcome and at home when visiting. I couldn't think of a better team I would want caring for my grandmother. Her room is always clean and tidy, she always has fluids by her side in case she gets thirsty and my grandad is always looked after
when he visits to care for her too. For this I am so grateful of everything the Cromwell House team do.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.451)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.451) out of 10 for Cromwell House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.626 for Cromwell House is calculated as follows: ( (110 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 155 Ratings = 4.626
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cromwell House is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 38 registered maximum number of service users is 7.6, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager Joined: 2003

Jennifer began her journey at MHA Cromwell House in 2003 as a care assistant, steadily progressing through roles including senior carer and assistant manager, before becoming home manager in 2008. While she initially hadn’t aspired to management, her passion for care and the supportive culture at MHA led her to grow into the role. Colleagues recently recognised her long service with flowers and a special cake, celebrating her commitment to the home, which offers residential and respite care for 38 residents.

Reflecting on her journey, Jennifer shared how a flatmate introduced her to MHA Cromwell House and how she instantly connected with its warm atmosphere. Despite early doubts about a management path, she embraced new responsibilities, drawing on her frontline experience to relate to her team and lead with empathy. The challenges of the pandemic further reinforced her resilience and sense of purpose.
