Thomas Tawell House on the North side of Norwich city centre, provides dedicate care and support to older people, specialising in support for people with a visual impairment or sight loss.

Recently purchased by Black Swan care group, the home is being extensively refurbished to create a bright and comfortable environment for the residents.

Most of the 37 bedrooms have en-suite facilities and residents are welcome to decorate and personalise their rooms. There is a dining room, adapted bathrooms and communal living rooms, including the newly redecorated Mitre Room; throughout the home there’s specialist flooring and colourways to assist residents with sight impairments to move around the home independently.

Sweet smelling plants and flowers have been planted in the private garden to create a sensory experience.

There is an array of stimulating and engaging group and one-to-one activities available for residents to enjoy – based on their preferences.

My mother is treated with the utmost respect by a diligent and caring, praiseworthy staff. The rooms are more than adequate - clean and well-appointed. The meals are well prepared, nicely presented and the portions well suited to my mother. Staff are readily helpful and show concern whenever I have
a query or need. Nothing appears too small to be attended to. I cannot praise the whole facility enough.

My grandma has been in your care home for a few months and the care she has received has been so amazing. You support her physically, mentally and emotionally to a very high standard with dignity. You cater for her blindness excellently, and I see this with all your other residents. If she is ill you
get the doctor straight away. I can always leave my gran in very capable hands which is such a Godsend.

Our mother was a relatively new resident and has settled in so well, we are delighted.
The staff are caring and pleasant to residents and visitors alike.
Mum cannot speak highly enough of the food which she really enjoys. One of the trustees visited mum just after a couple of days. I was impressed
that mum had a bag of presents from the staff on Christmas morning.

My mum has been with Thomas Tawell House approximately 18 months and over this period, I cannot fault the love, care and support given to her and me. I feel she is well looked after and given individual care as needed. Any issues with health have been dealt with efficiently.


The home is always clean,

My Aunt has now been at Thomas Tawell House for 5 years. She is 101 years old and I consider she is being very well cared for. She is fortunate in as much that she is still able to get herself up and put herself to bed. Help is always available if she needs it or agrees to ask for it. As her next of
kin and have P.O.A. I feel able to speak with staff/Manager if I have any concerns.

As Thomas Tawell House is a home specialising for people who are visually impaired, I find the staff and management there extremely kind and caring. I feel at ease knowing that my mother is in a safe environment and being cared for.

I am the daughter-in-law and this is my opinion and as a retired employee of CQC, I do have a personal view about the lack of dignity for my mother-in-law.


Her clothing and presentation could be given a bit more thought.
I really think it lacks dignity for her.


My sister-in-law cleans the

room periodically as its often dusty.
My husband is never contacted, despite he's N.O.K.

In February 2018 the time came for my 92-year-old mother to move into Thomas Tawell House as because of health and care needs she could no longer live alone.
At a time when she needed support and understanding the staff could not have been any better from the chief executive down to the support staff.
The home she now has, it is giving her a new social life and a reason to want to get up in the mornings. Mum is happy. Thomas Tawell House her family thank you.
