My Dad has now been a resident of the home for the last 10 months and settled really well. The staff are kind, helpful and very considerate to his needs. He is now eating so much better than he was at home and enjoys the variety of meals on offer, tailored to his specific dietary needs, always being
given a choice. He enjoys the variety of activities on offer and he very pleased that he is still able to take part in times of prayer and communion. The staff ensure the family are told should there be any medical issues such as falls/illness as soon as is practically possible. Any questions or concerns the family have are dealt with efficiently and as promptly as possible. The younger members of the family are always made welcome and appreciate time given to them by the staff when visiting great grandad.

The Martins is an excellent care home. It provides a holistic caring environment and each resident is treated as if they were in their own home.
The team have not only given the best care to my mother but also helped put our minds at rest in wanting to know our mother is cared for and happy. We would
definitely recommend this as a place for your loved one to live in their later years.

Our aim is to enable our residents to live later life well and at times this can be challenging, however, your Mum has settled in so well and is always very happy and still enjoys a spot of gardening. It is always difficult as a family to make that decision and we are so pleased that as a family that your minds are at rest.

When my Dad was taken in to care we were obviously worried as to whether this was the right decision or that he would receive the appropriate care.
On first visiting the Martins this worry turned to relief!
Everyone was so thoughtful and thorough explaining everything to us surrounding his care. We
were shown his room before he moved in and the caretakers put up pictures, photos, etc to ensure he would feel at home once he arrived.
My Dad has settled in really well and I'm kept informed of any concerns, falls or changes that need to be made.
The staff are friendly and he is well looked after with freshly prepared meals.
My only slight concern is his laundry going missing even though we have labelled everything but usually if I ask this gets sorted quickly. Also, staff shortages over the summer. We would love Dad to get outside every day, even to just do a lap of the garden as he has always loved the outdoors but this is not realistically possible with staff numbers.
Reply from Melanie McGarr, Home Manager at The MartinsMany thanks for taking the time to leave a review and I will ensure that the team are made aware. Your Dad has settled in so well at The Martins and when I am walking around the home I always stop and have a chat with him, he is usually eating a packet of sweets that you have brought in. Your Dad can access the garden independently and I will ensure that this is passed on to the team to offer him this daily. Laundry can be an issue at times, and I am pleased that this has been quickly resolved when you have asked, we are also working hard on recruitment to fill our vacant positions but do always ensure that if we are using Agency staff that they are familiar with the residents and the home.

When my mum arrived , she was not in a good state of health , her care has been amazing and we have all noticed how she has come on leaps and bounds , and refers to this as her home now which she loves , we were really worried about how she would settle in but the staff have all been amazing in looking
after her and helping to become our mum again

I became a resident at The Martins in June 2025 after a sudden decline in health issues. From the day I came I have been able to settle quickly and am pleased that I chose this way of the full-time care I now need. My family are also pleased for me and I still have a lot of freedom to keep touch with
the wider world, friends and family. My only regret is poor internet connection (very poor).

My sister, a resident at The Martins, has gone through a difficult time over the past year with her ongoing dementia. Her behaviour became progressively more challenging towards both staff and other residents, ending in a reportable safeguarding incident. With a high degree of internal staff professionalism
and help from the team at Dementia Intensive Support Team and the GP, she is now so much more content, and is living in a much calmer and controlled way. I cannot speak highly enough of the empathetic and caring way that The Martin's Team helped her through a very difficult time

I last visited my mum at The Martins in March and April this year as I travel from the United States. I have been amazed at the dedication and professionalism of the staff. I have seen my mum have terrible days, not knowing where she is or what is going on; your staff are there every step of the way.
Thankfully
I have family who can visit my mum most days to check on her, and they are always impressed with the quality of care she receives. It takes a special team to take care of those who need constant care and assistance, and it seems as if The Martins has a formula that could be replicated for other homes.
I will be back in October and November and I cannot wait to resume my visits and talk with the staff about my mum. Please continue to excel and lead the way.

Moving a loved one into care is a difficult thing for all involved. Especially when that person has dementia and so cannot fully process why they are there; cannot remember how difficult and scary life was before the move; and, indeed, cannot remember visits or activities.
Certainly it is never easy
to care for someone with dementia: if they cannot understand that they need help, then any help given can be resented. The loss of the ability to do what one used to is blamed not on the mind or the body that can no longer do these things, but on the family and the carers.
Since my mother moved into The Martins - during the pandemic - the staff have shown my mother, and us all, wonderful kindness and care. It is dreadfully sad that my mother cannot have the retirement she would have hoped for. But given that reality, there is nowhere better I would wish my mother to be. The staff at The Martins make it a very special, safe, and happy place, filled with warmth, kindness, and laughter.

We have been delighted with the care my cousin has received. She has settled well I think due to the initial welcome and attentive care.
The care team and leadership display a positive and compassionate attitude and genuinely demonstrate care and companionship when carrying out their duties. I am pleased
that they allow and encourage independent thought and choice for my cousin as often as possible while managing her care needs with skill.

My Mother moved into The Martins Bury St Edmunds in December 2022.
She settled in immediately, the transition was smooth and without any hiccups whatsoever.
The rooms and bathrooms are immaculate with hand bars, disabled equipment etc for extra help and safety if required.
There is a hairdresser
and manicurist on site and a daily mobile shop.
The staff are without say the absolute best, nothing is too much trouble and they always conduct themselves in a professional yet warm manner, all that a family could ask for.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and most residents are free to move about within their departments.
I know it’s not always an easy decision when a member of your family needs that next step up into a residential or care home, but I can honestly say I have no hesitation whatsoever in highly recommending this home to anyone.

Our first visit to The Martins was September 2022. We visited when it was clear that Mum needed more care and were very impressed with how the care home was run, the homeliness and cleanliness and, most importantly, how staff treated and cared for the residents.
Mum moved in during September and was
welcomed and made to feel at home. There are activities for residents should they wish to join in and good facilities including a hairdressers and lovely gardens.
Mum’s health has deteriorated recently but we feel reassured that she is being well looked after and treated with dignity and respect.
Mum recently celebrated her 90th birthday and the staff at The Martins made it a lovely day with tea, cake, and music which was enjoyed by family and other residents.
Most of all, The Martins gives us peace of mind. We were very lucky that Mum was able to join their ‘family.’

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.671)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.671) out of 10 for The Martins is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.846 for The Martins is calculated as follows: ( (132 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 156 Ratings = 4.846
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Martins is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager Joined: 2018

With a career in care spanning over 25 years, Melanie McGarr is the home manager at MHA The Martins. Mel brings a wealth of experience and dedication to supporting others, having begun her journey working for 18 years in a secure environment with adults living with learning difficulties and challenging behaviour, before changing her focus to older people’s care.
