Shortlisted as a finalist for the Caring UK Awards 2023, in the South Care Home of the Year category, Shaftesbury House is a very special home.

Many of the team are long serving, the home manager has been with Shaftesbury House for over 20 years, and the deputy manager over 15 years. And with just 27 residents, it has a very warm, family feel. And of course, family and friends are welcome at any time.

The team are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, supporting them to do things which bring them joy. This summer they organised a wonderful trip to Felixstowe Beach (August 2023), with many staff volunteering to support the trip on their day off. They hired a rickshaw so the residents could ride along the promenade, followed by fish and chips by the sea.

The way relatives are embraced into life in the home is very important. There are regular relatives’ meetings where they share ideas. At a recent meeting relatives felt a giant pergola would enhance the garden. Devoted to giving their residents the best, the team threw themselves into action, raising over £1,000 with sponsored events!

The staff organise so many fabulous events for the residents and their families, each accompanied by a themed menu, from summer barbecues to a Country and Western celebration.

And the team’s own families are also part of life in the home, with staff members’ loved ones doing everything from singing and dancing at events, and even bringing in their pet tortoises for the residents to pet!

Mealtimes are a real highlight of the day. The chefs create delicious, seasonal meals, with home-baking for afternoon tea. The assistant chef is an exceptionally talented baker and creates special treats for birthdays and celebrations. And of course, for any celebration there’s a special menu, like cream teas for mothering Sunday or a barbecue and themed cakes for the coronation!

Our weekly fees are individual to each of our residents and are subject to a pre-admission assessment, which is required to understand the level of care and support needed. This depends on your care needs and the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms through to our premium bedroom options.

My mum has lived at Shaftesbury House for nearly four years, he is well cared for, well fed and warm. The staff are friendly and keep my family and myself well informed.

When my mother was in hospital. I has to find temporary respite care as quickly as possible. As soon as I walked into the home I was struck by how friendly, bright, homely and clean as was. My mother has become a permanent resident and is very happy there.
All staff are very friendly and welcoming.
My mother receives excellent care and is kept busy with lots of activities. Whenever I have had any questions everyone is always so helpful. There is a happy atmosphere there and I always witness residents being treated with compassion.

I absolutely love my job and I love seeing the residents happy with my food.
Good nutrition is such a big part of mealtimes, which are the most important part of the day for many residents.
They look forward to sitting down in the dining room together, it’s the social aspect of it. If they have a good meal in front of them, they will talk about it with each other.
I love baking, baking is my forte and when it’s a resident’s birthday I always try to think of something special for their cake.
