With what is undoubtedly one of the most unique, internal care home gardens in Cornwall, Blackwood has a hidden gem for its residents and their loved ones to enjoy!

The home has been designed in a square shape, with a stunning large, enclosed garden, filled with flowers, plants and a fruit tree. With raised beds for residents in wheelchairs, it is a hub of activity. With the support of the team, the residents grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs, harvesting them for the chef to use in the kitchen. There is also a summer house and plenty of sheltered seating.

The home has two floors, each with its own cosy lounge, overlooking the garden, a dining area and kitchenette. The residents enjoy delicious, home-cooked meals prepared by the home’s chef, as well as home baking for afternoon tea. The team also offers respite care breaks, which are ideal for family carers who would like to take a short break themselves.

The team is passionate about enriching the lives of residents with activities which bring them joy, as well as keeping those vital community connections alive. From live music and gardening, to trips to the local memory café and other popular community events. The home also has a wonderful partnership with a local friendship group, who love to play carpet bowls with the residents.

Blackwood has its own darts team and a mobile bar called The Blackwood Arms. There are weekly visits from a hairdresser, keep fit classes and singing sessions.

The team throws open the doors for Easter and Summer fetes in the garden, and residents enjoy trips out in the local community, from local fayres to shopping.

The team, many of whom have been with Blackwood for many years, provides residential and dementia care. They embrace the loved ones into day-to-day life in the home, giving Blackwood a warm, family feel, something which is echoed in the home’s fantastic reviews.

Staff at Blackwood House are always very pleasant. Food is always varied. Staff have been under difficult times during the past months but have arranged visits once able to admit family in a safe place.

My father was very happy during the two years he spent at Blackwood House. We were able to visit him at any time - he was always clean and well dressed. The rooms were exceptionally fresh and tidy and the staff helpful and cheery. He was well fed and all his medical needs were met promptly and efficiently.
The staff always kept us fully informed by email or telephone when necessary and we consider ourselves lucky that Dad found a place in this excellent care home.

Staff are amazing! Very friendly and welcoming, always keeping me updated, in detail, about my dad. However, Dad often misplaced his glasses, teeth and hearing aid. In turn, I wasn't made aware of this until I visited.
The gardens are very secure and also very well kept.

From a distance with limited access due to COVID-19 in care due to COVID-19, I am delighted with the care of my mum. She seems happier, more involved with people and more stable than she has ever been. Communication with me has been good. My mum tells me that the food is good and she has all that she
needs. The staff are very friendly and considerate. Due to COVID, I have not seen all the facilities or rooms.

My father was a resident at Blackwood House from June 2019 until his death this February.
I am sorry I cannot recommend this home.
My father had dementia.
Most of the staff were very sociable and caring but met one or two who were quite sharp and uncaring with my father.
There was a birdcage at
the home and my father put his finger on the cage and got shouted at by one of the staff.
On a couple of occasions when I called my father didn’t have his glasses on. He needed his glasses to see. I looked for them and found them under his bed.
In February my father fell over and needed to go into hospital for blood transfusion.
This was on the Friday. On the following Tuesday, my brother called into the home as he did not get the message that my father was in the hospital. I was abroad at the time but my daughter didn’t know he was in hospital so did not get to see him before he died and was really upset.
On the whole, I could not recommend this home with everything I saw on visiting my father.

Our Mother has been residing at Blackwood House for nearly 5 years and has just recently passed away.
The staff and management have been absolutely wonderful to her and cared for her right to the end of her life. She was part of the family. They have always treated our Mother with the utmost dignity
and respect to make her time there as pleasant and comfortable as possible. They have always gone above and beyond any usual care and would always make sure that our Mum was well dressed and presented and that the food was very good.
We can only thank them all from the bottom of our hearts for what they have done for our dear Mum. We were always allowed to visit her at any time, day or night and treated with the same respect as they had for our Mum. We as a family, could not have chosen a better place. Thank you, once again. 10-star rating if possible.

My papa stayed at Blackwood House and we could not ask for a better care service! The home was always exceptionally clean, meals well cooked and provided and the care staff always went above and beyond. The gardener at Blackwood should be proud, what an amazing space for all to enjoy! The home manager
was professional, hands-on and always led from the front when delivering exceptional care. When my papa sadly passed away, like him, we were supported with love and dignity. They even attended his funeral, they are our family, they loved and cared for him too, we can't thank the home enough.

My mum has been a resident in Blackwood House for over two and a half years and I am very happy at the way she is cared for and the treatment to her. As like every place of work some staff are better than others but I feel Blackwood House have some of the best and dedicated staff that you could find
from the bottom to the top in levels.
They are so caring not only to the residents but to the relatives as well. The rooms, gardens and activities are wonderful. Thank you BlackWood for caring.

Although staff are kind and friendly, my mother is not receiving the level of care we would like. She is frequently wet when we visit and is falling regularly. Although I am sure residents are taken outside and entertained, I have never seen evidence of this for my mother who is always just sat in a
chair looking at the wall.

Bad bits:
Constant management changes and no follow up on actions and basic systems for improvement. Feedback is welcomed but rarely acted upon.


Nurse call systems are often ignored by staff and unplugged. There has been no apparent management follow through on rectifying this behaviour.

bits:
Cleanliness is much better since the refurbishment but there are still occasional issues.


The gardens are lovely in the nice weather and it's been great to get outside in the fresh air.


There are a few staff that are exceptionally great and a credit to the organisation.

Every time we visited the resident she always looked happy, mentioned how wonderful the staff had been to her. Changed sheets daily. She is amazed at how clean they are for her and others. Staff always smile and very helpful.

Recently I have become a lot more pleased with the attention and treatment that my nan has received. I think this is all down to the hard work of the new management. I feel a lot more confident and comfortable when leaving my nan there, which is a lot different to how I used to feel when leaving her.
Thank you for improving the place and making me feel happy about where she is.

All the staff are very friendly, caring and patient. This reassuring as I only get down to Cornwall once a month. Also, they keep us informed of any developments or changes, which makes you feel involved even though you cant be there.

Blackwood House is 400 miles from my home so I only get to visit my mother about six times a year. I never notify the home when I am coming as I like to see things they are. My mother is always clean and well dressed, particular attention is taken to ensure that her clothes are co-ordinated and include
extra touches like matching scarves or hair accessories staff are always kind, caring and patient. Mum is as settled and contented as she can be given her condition.
