With just 36 bedrooms and a team which is passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, Chyvarhas has a warm, family feel the moment you walk through the door.

Providing residential, nursing, dementia care and palliative care, the team also offers respite care breaks, which are ideal for family carers who would like to take a short break themselves, knowing their loved one is in safe hands.

In keeping with the name of the home, meaning ‘meeting point’ in Cornish, the team is passionate about embracing the local community into life at Chyvarhas, from regular singers, musicians and performers, to local school children, who enjoy activities with the residents.

Every month, carers from the local community are invited to the home’s dementia support group, which takes places on the third Friday of every month, from 10am to noon.

There are also regular exercise sessions with Love to Move, and animal therapy visits, with everything from rabbits to owls!

The home is thriving, with so many activities to enjoy, from impromptu singalongs to baking and pamper sessions. A mobile hairdresser also visits for regular appointments with the residents.

Chyvarhas is unique in its layout, with four wings – with three cosy lounges, two of which lead to their own private secure garden. In the summer the residents love spending time gardening, or relaxing with loved ones, who are welcome at any time.

There is a spacious central dining room, where residents socialise with delicious, home cooked meals, from roast dinners with all the trimmings to fish and chip Fridays, and home baking for afternoon tea.

Chyvarhas also has its own private Facebook group, so families can see what their loved ones have been enjoying doing, even if they can’t be there each day in person.

Situated on the main bus route, the home has excellent transport links and a large, secure car park.

My husband has been in Chyvarhas for 2 years now. He now never wakes up, so just lives in bed apparently asleep. Always very clean and well cared for.

Chyvarhas has provided a safe and secure environment - every time I visit the atmosphere is always happy and welcoming. The food is excellent, activities are varied, and the staff are wonderful - so patient and willing to listen. A nice element of the home is that there are no ghastly smells as so often
happens in care homes! I am more than grateful for all the help, assistance, and advice given to me - also support.

The care shown to Mum and our whole family was outstanding while Mum was receiving palliative care.
Our family was treated with care, respect, and kindness. More importantly, Mum was treated with dignity and kindness. I have recommended Chyvarhas to other families and will continue to do so. Please
thank all the staff again on my behalf.
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for your review, especially written at such a difficult time. We have passed this on to our team at Chyvarhas, who will be touched to read your kind words about their care for your mother.

Been visiting Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home for over four years.
The home has had an update with the entrance and furnishings being updated or replaced since Christmas.
Looking good. Care workers still as friendly and helpful as ever. Nice, calm feel still.
Thank you.

Great communication from managers and carers so far. Mum has only been in a few weeks, but person-centred care, attention and care planning very evident.
Communal areas are spacious and comfortable with various styles of chairs. Food is available all the time and the atmosphere is clearly geared for
every resident's needs and time preferences.
Always get a welcome greeting from the reception staff.

The staff were very helpful and reassuring on our initial visit and answered all of our many questions regarding care for our family member in respite. The room was very clean and welcoming. My husband appears to have been very happy with his care here. This was his first experience of respite care
and both he and I were apprehensive but it appears to have gone well. Thank you to all the staff for taking such good care of my husband.

My husband has only been in your home for just over a month but I have been very pleased with his excellent care. I can go home and feel that he is being well looked after and can relax and not worry about him. Also being very near to the home I know I can visit at any time and it is only 5 minutes
away. Thank you very much for everything you do, much appreciated.

Mother has enjoyed the varied activities in the home, in spite of her language difficulties the staff try so hard to use her language to communicate. She is truly happy there. She enjoys the communal sitting rooms and loves to see people about.

I recently attended the support group at Chyvarhas, which is held every month. Such a lovely way to open up the home and support the community. I have personal experience and professional experience with dementia and I thought it was very valuable. The home is beautifully decorated and there is always
a really warm and calm atmosphere. Chyvarhas is always tidy, hotel standard. The home manager, assistant manager and all staff are brilliant, very knowledgeable and kind. I actually know more than one resident currently, although I hadn't visited for some time it was nice to see that it was still a lovely home, and even looks better! I am happy to know that both my friend and ex-father-in-law are receiving such wonderful care! Thank you!

My dad has just had two weeks respite care after a hip replacement. He had a very happy time in Chyvarhas Care Home and found the staff very caring towards him. I found the manager very thorough and caring too about my dad's prospective needs before he had his stay. The reception staff are really lovely
and answered all my questions and supported me in helping my dad during this time. All the staff are lovely!

My mother spent twenty months at Chyvarhas Care Home, Callington. My mother suffered from dementia. Every member of staff from the kitchen, reception, nurses and care workers cared for my mother with care, love, professionalism and kindness and dignity. I am unable to express in words how grateful I
am that my mum was cared for at Chyvarhas. In such challenging and sad circumstances, Chyvarhas was the only positive in my mother's final months. Every member of staff is exceptional and goes above and beyond their roles.

My mother has been extremely well looked after during her stay at Chyvarhas Care Home. All her needs have been met and nothing was too much trouble. All the staff and carers have been very helpful and so friendly, going about their tasks with kindness, cheerfulness and dedication.
The residents were
given a lovely Christmas Day. Mum's room was small but had a pleasant View.

Staff are often on their phones when working. Staff are caring but often overlook basic needs ie; hearing aids, pads and shoes being done up. The overall home feels quite chaotic, the large dining/living area often has a TV on, radio on and music coming from the kitchen. My mother was unsure how to
use this space. Lack of activities run by someone who knows the residents and their level of functioning. The manager was very helpful. Particular staff are excellent and need nurturing.

Unfortunately, my friend was taken ill and passed away within 24 hours. The home kept me up to date from the start. I asked if I could visit, and that was encouraged. I was with my friend when he took seriously ill. The team all knew their position as he passed. Every step was taken to revive. I was
informed in such a dignified manner. Every single member of staff was just amazing as they always have been in the seven years I have been visiting. Great home and great staff.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.772)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.772) out of 10 for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 30 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.772 for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (277 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 346 Ratings = 4.772
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked for Cornwall Care for just over two years now. I came to Cornwall Care from a smaller organisation as I wanted to work for an organisation that was innovative and where I could work with talented people, and I have not been disappointed. Our team has worked tirelessly to improve the standards of care that Chyvarhas provides and I feel we now lead the way in the local area, encouraging good, person-centred care to the people we support. I am looking forward to continue our work at Chyvarhas.
