With just 36 bedrooms and a team which is passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, Chyvarhas has a warm, family feel the moment you walk through the door.

Providing residential, nursing, dementia care and palliative care, the team also offers respite care breaks, which are ideal for family carers who would like to take a short break themselves, knowing their loved one is in safe hands.

In keeping with the name of the home, meaning ‘meeting point’ in Cornish, the team is passionate about embracing the local community into life at Chyvarhas, from regular singers, musicians and performers, to local school children, who enjoy activities with the residents.

Every month, carers from the local community are invited to the home’s dementia support group, which takes places on the third Friday of every month, from 10am to noon.

There are also regular exercise sessions with Love to Move, and animal therapy visits, with everything from rabbits to owls!

The home is thriving, with so many activities to enjoy, from impromptu singalongs to baking and pamper sessions. A mobile hairdresser also visits for regular appointments with the residents.

Chyvarhas is unique in its layout, with four wings – with three cosy lounges, two of which lead to their own private secure garden. In the summer the residents love spending time gardening, or relaxing with loved ones, who are welcome at any time.

There is a spacious central dining room, where residents socialise with delicious, home cooked meals, from roast dinners with all the trimmings to fish and chip Fridays, and home baking for afternoon tea.

Chyvarhas also has its own private Facebook group, so families can see what their loved ones have been enjoying doing, even if they can’t be there each day in person.

Situated on the main bus route, the home has excellent transport links and a large, secure car park.

Very friendly and caring staff, from the manager, nurses, care workers and domestics, nothing was too much trouble. The home was kept very clean at all times and there was a separate area where rehab residents could sit and having my meals in my room was not a problem.
The only criticism I had was
quite often the response time when I used the call bell and I would like to have known what activities were available.

I visited my aunt today at 11.30 to find her in her room. The bed was not made, there were breakfast dishes, and her commode was half full of urine! She was still in her nightwear and her incontinence pad was hanging out the back of her pyjama trousers like a tail. She was brought a cup of coffee so
the assistant was asked politely if she could remove the urine. We understood she was busy! She came back grabbed the bucket returned with it, threw it into the commode in a rage, and walked out. The bucket had not even been washed out let alone sanitised as there was still yellow urine in the bottom of it. My aunt had to ask me if I would mind dressing her which I did putting on clean pad and underwear but why has she not been dressed? No one has showered her or even washed her and this is now going on to the afternoon! This is certainly not acceptable, where is the welfare for these people in your care? I am appalled at this hygiene level. I had to clear up her room.

I have found Chyvarhas Care Home to be caring, supportive and excellent on every level, from staff to management, and cannot find fault with any aspect of care provided for my mum.
My mum sadly requires round-the-clock care and can be quite challenging in her behaviour as she had been, in her life,
so independent, as well as the bleed stroke she has suffered but all have been addressed and managed since being at Chyvarhas.
I cannot thank them enough for the care they have provided and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone in our very sad situation.

Always made welcome by the staff.
Weekend, not enough staff, in my opinion, therefore patients in bed for longer than they should be.

Speaking from my personal experience, I shall be eternally grateful to all the Chyvarhas team, who cared for my dad during his short stay at the end of 2020. Their professionalism, empathy and dedication were faultless with continual updates regarding my dad's wellbeing/health, for which I cannot thank
them enough. I have only just felt strong enough to be able to write a review, after my dad's passing in December, but felt it totally justified and my only regret is that he never got to spend more quality time with the caring staff and other residents, in their supportive environment. Thank you all.

My mother in law can be a difficult person and sometimes unkind, the staff manage her very well and she has now settled in. I have found the staff most helpful to all my enquiries and would recommend Chyvarhas to anyone who has loved ones who require managed care.

I appreciated all the love and care that the nursing home showed to my cousin. During her stay with them, she had a lovely little group of friends who she loves being with. Staff were very kind and caring. She was very happy during her time here.
She enjoyed her food and being the one that was being
looked after for a change. She deserved it.

My father is receiving end of life care at Chyvarhas. He has stated to me that he feels very safe and secure here. His desperate anxiety, especially at night has diminished incredibly. The 24 hour care is highly professional and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. From a personal point of view,
I find the home clean and tidy and I have a good relationship with the management team. My family have been made to feel very welcome.

The staff provide a very caring environment for all residents and nothing is too much trouble for them. When necessary they provide support to families and welcome them into the 'family' of the home. I am so pleased that my husband is a resident at Chyvarhas as I could not wish for better care from
all staff.

During the last month of my husband's life, the care he was given was second to none. The carers were in and out of his room regularly. The last two days were spent in repositioning him every hour. I could not ask for more. I shall be eternally grateful to them.

The staff were very friendly, available, caring and kind to our mother. They always explained anything they were going to do to her and spent a lot of time encouraging her to eat and drink. They turned her regularly to avoid any sores whether sitting out dressed or lying in bed and checked whether she
wanted to stay where she was or be moved. Visitors were also treated in a friendly manner and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We knew she was in good hands when we could not be there. The staff showed great sensitivity when it became apparent she was dying.

My mum has been in hospital since Christmas Eve after falling over. She had a brief return home and a stay at respite care before going back into the hospital where she became extremely restless and aggressive. She was sent to a care home in Newquay where after two falls was back in hospital and then
sent to her current care home, which was a relief to the family as she has settled in well due to the care and the support the staff have given her.

Our friend entered Chyvarhas late December 2015 with dementia. Her illness has progressed so that she is unable to walk, talk, eat or recognise anyone or anything. Throughout her stay, the staff have cared for her in the nicest way - always. During our regular visits, we have been well informed by friendly
staff. The care home is always warm and tidy.

I've been a regular visitor at Chyvarhas for 2 years and have noticed the staff are very caring and treat everyone with dignity and kindness. The one bedroom I have seen needs decorating. The main day room is spacious but could do with a cooling system in a heatwave.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.772)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.772) out of 10 for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 30 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.772 for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (277 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 346 Ratings = 4.772
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chyvarhas Residential and Nursing Home is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked for Cornwall Care for just over two years now. I came to Cornwall Care from a smaller organisation as I wanted to work for an organisation that was innovative and where I could work with talented people, and I have not been disappointed. Our team has worked tirelessly to improve the standards of care that Chyvarhas provides and I feel we now lead the way in the local area, encouraging good, person-centred care to the people we support. I am looking forward to continue our work at Chyvarhas.
