  • Doneraile Residential Care Home, Newton Abbot
Doneraile is a small, intimate residential care home in Newton Abbot for just 23 residents, part of the award-winning Rose Care Group. Its smaller size means the team can offer truly personalised care for people over 60 at sensible, transparent prices, without compromising high standards.

The home is manager-led, with a long-standing staff team, many of whom have been at Doneraile for years. This stability provides familiar faces, genuine trust and staff who know each resident well - their routines, interests and the small details that help them feel comfortable and at ease. The team sees itself as adding to the family’s care, not replacing it, and focuses on the right balance of independence, support and a sense of belonging.

Doneraile is designed to feel homely yet practical. There is a main lounge where residents can chat and socialise, a quiet lounge for reading or one-to-one time, and smaller spaces to relax with visitors or enjoy some peace. A veranda offers safe, open air for a gentle stroll or a cup of tea in the sun. With only 23 residents, shared spaces feel calm and familiar rather than busy. Activities include creative sessions, gentle exercise, games, coffee mornings, live entertainment and visits from the local reverend - always varied, but never forced.

The home supports a range of needs, particularly for those who prefer a less intimidating, more personalised setting. Whether someone simply wants to feel safe, needs help with day-to-day tasks, or is beginning to need extra support with their memory, care is adapted as needs change so residents can remain settled without the disruption of moving home. Doneraile aims to be a place where residents feel known, valued and part of a family. Prospective residents and their families are welcome to visit to see the home and meet the team.

My dad was a resident at Doneraile for two years, before passing away on the 9th of August 2016. I have no complaints, only praise for the owners and the staff, who treated my dad with courtesy and respect.

We have been very impressed over the years by Doneraile's staff and their care of our friend. We particularly appreciated the courteous and informative way our telephone calls were answered especially when our friend was unable to speak on the telephone. Staff always made us welcome when we visited
and we feel our friend was herself, a testament to the care she was given. Her personal hygiene was impeccable and the dignity offered to her by staff was a jot to see. The ethos of this residential home has set our own standards of expectation should we ever need such care ourselves. A totally 5 star experience, well done.

The distinguishing feature of Doneraile is the care that all the staff show for the residents, not only as individuals, but, very constructively, as a mutually supportive community. The dining room was a lively hub of conversation in contrast to the morose and listless chomping all too common in the
sector. Staff worked actively to involve all residents. It is significant that, when my wife and I were looking for residential care, Doneraile was the only one where a resident spoke to us.
Care for the individual was meticulous. While I was being admitted, a care worker spotted that I had a sore on one toe: on the same day the doctor was called, and a course of antibiotics was prescribed.
My room was delightful: with French windows opening onto the lovely garden. Meals were varied and attractive.
Many of the staff have the long service .. It shows!

Very warm and welcoming home. My uncle has settled in very quickly and speaks very highly of his carers. We are impressed with the changes in his mood and the way he has integrated with all at the home. This stimulation is exactly what he needed.

As I become older I find myself visiting friends in several residential homes and I can honestly say Doneraile is the best by far. The staff and owners are always very pleasant, I am always offered a cup of tea and all the residents look very content there. My friend is very well cared for and she
has plenty of opportunity to join in activities. The food looks and smells excellent. I would highly recommend Doneraile.

My Nan has been at this home for over two years and she is very happy there. When I visit I am made to feel welcome and there is always a lot of laughter from other residents and everyone who works there. An excellent place for my Nan to live as she is a lot happier now than when she was living on
her own. She is eating very well and enjoys the activities provided.

Doneraile is a very well managed home. The care, respect and kindness given by staff is exemplary. It maintains a lovely home from home appeal and is a happy home with fun and laughter too. The staff are always mindful of the supporting relatives and I am always offered tea and biscuits when I visit.
From the first day it has been welcoming, they took great care in settling my mum when she arrived considering it was a rapid change of circumstances for her she ahs settled quickly and is very happy at Doneraile.

I would gladly recommend Doneraile Care home to anyone looking for good quality care provision. We were always made welcome by the staff and my mother was very happy with the high standards. Mum was very happy there and enjoyed her room and the care provided. Towards the end the staff were always so
helpful and considerate even gaining a smile and responses when I could not. A good team of carers who had residents to the forefront. Thank you Doneraile for quality care.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.860)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.860) out of 10 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.860 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (203 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 235 Ratings = 4.86
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
