  • Doneraile Residential Care Home, Newton Abbot
Doneraile is a small, intimate residential care home in Newton Abbot for just 23 residents, part of the award-winning Rose Care Group. Its smaller size means the team can offer truly personalised care for people over 60 at sensible, transparent prices, without compromising high standards.

The home is manager-led, with a long-standing staff team, many of whom have been at Doneraile for years. This stability provides familiar faces, genuine trust and staff who know each resident well - their routines, interests and the small details that help them feel comfortable and at ease. The team sees itself as adding to the family’s care, not replacing it, and focuses on the right balance of independence, support and a sense of belonging.

Doneraile is designed to feel homely yet practical. There is a main lounge where residents can chat and socialise, a quiet lounge for reading or one-to-one time, and smaller spaces to relax with visitors or enjoy some peace. A veranda offers safe, open air for a gentle stroll or a cup of tea in the sun. With only 23 residents, shared spaces feel calm and familiar rather than busy. Activities include creative sessions, gentle exercise, games, coffee mornings, live entertainment and visits from the local reverend - always varied, but never forced.

The home supports a range of needs, particularly for those who prefer a less intimidating, more personalised setting. Whether someone simply wants to feel safe, needs help with day-to-day tasks, or is beginning to need extra support with their memory, care is adapted as needs change so residents can remain settled without the disruption of moving home. Doneraile aims to be a place where residents feel known, valued and part of a family. Prospective residents and their families are welcome to visit to see the home and meet the team.

I recently had the pleasure of placing my great aunt in Doneraile and I can't say enough wonderful things about the care she received. From the moment she arrived, every detail was handled with warmth, professionalism, and a genuine dedication to ensuring her happiness and peace. Thank you everyone.

I can't praise Doneraile Residential Home highly enough, from the first time I stepped through the door, to assess if it would be suitable for my husband, I have been extremely impressed, this really feels like a home from home, it's welcoming, warm and friendly, the entire team are superb, attentive,
compassionate, always respectful and consummately professional, care is tailored for the needs of the individual and regularly reassessed.
Visitors are made welcome and residents are encouraged to interact with other residents and staff with conversation, various activities, games and regular entertainment.
David has a lovely spacious room and food is excellent, delicious and plentiful, something particularly important to David. The premises are always lovely and clean.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Donerail to anyone seeking first class residential care.
One word sums up the wonderful Doneraile Residential care home really and that's superlative.

It was a very difficult and emotional decision to place mum into care. Mum has vascular dementia and Initially mum was staying for a few weeks but now doesn't want to return to her own home. After two weeks there was a vast improvement in her mood and engagement with activities, best decision mum made
and great peace of mind. The home is very warm and welcoming staff are friendly and approachable. I really like that the managers door is always open, able to chat with management and staff. I can be a daughter again and not a carer.
Reply from Claire McMahon McMahon, Area Manager at Doneraile Residential Care HomeThank you so much for sharing this deeply personal and heartfelt feedback. We understand how difficult and emotional that decision must have been, and it means a great deal to hear that your mum has settled so well and is feeling happier and more engaged. Knowing that you now have peace of mind and are able to be a daughter again, rather than a carer, is incredibly important to us. We're also pleased that you've found the home warm and welcoming, and that you feel able to approach both the management and the team openly. Your kind words will be shared with everyone, and we're truly grateful for your trust in us to care for your mum.

Mum lived at Doneraile for 18 months until her death due to old age and frailty. The family and I were so impressed by the way the staff were able to respond to her changing needs over the months. They referred to specialist services to assess and help staff manage different aspects of mums care. The
food was very good and as a family we were welcome to eat with mum in the dining room. We shared meals in mums room too. There is a full range of activities including church services which was important to mum. Mums room was kept immaculately clean as were all areas in the home with regular changes being made to upgrade the home. All emergency issues were dealt with swiftly and we were kept fully informed. We were particularly impressed by the kindness and professionalism shown by all staff in the last few weeks of mums life. Everyone treated mum with dignity and it was obvious how much the staff cared for mum. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt cared for too.

Although my father was only at Doneraile Care Home for a couple of months the whole experience was amazing. From its arrival to his passing the staff where fantastic. They made him and us so welcome like one big family. The home is so beautiful and spotlessly clean. The food is wonderful as well. We
could not have wished for a more loving place for him and we always are grateful to everyone at Doneraile for their care.

Dad lived independently keeping active through swimming and walking until last year when his health deteriorated when he needed a short period in hospital. He subsequently came to Doneraile, initially for respite care, in September '24. The staff were so welcoming and compassionate that you immediately
felt 'at home'. Dad soon settled in, taking part in the activities and enjoying the company of the friendly staff and residents. Due to dad's continued vulnerability it was evident that independent living was no longer an option. He is very happy and content to be a permanent resident at Doneraile and he continues to thrive with the excellent and professional care that dad receives.

My aunt, has been a resident at Doneraile for many years now; as her needs have increased, particularly over the last year, these have been met with a professional, caring and compassionate approach. Respect is always demonstrated by the senior and junior carers, alongside maintaining her dignity.
Although, my aunt, is very often happy with her own company, she is always encouraged to join in many of the activities, particularly those, that are of particular interest to her, such as the musical entertainment, visiting pets.
The home is always very clean and tidy and at meal times, the dining room provides a pleasant place for the residents, to have their meals and socialise, if they wish?
I would definitely recommend Doneraile to those who are looking for a residential care home, fir a relative or friend

My mum has lived at Doneraile for over 3 years now. Mum has a lovely, light, spacious room with her own pictures to remind her of home. Mum has received excellent care whilst living at Doneraile and has known the same carers for a number of years. I am kept well informed of any changes to mum's care
and have enjoyed events for family and friends throughout the year. Mum enjoys taking part in the daily activities and has even been on several local trips out. I would recommend Doneraile to anyone looking for a care home for a family member.

My wife suffered from dementia that was getting hard to manage, so she came to Doneraile for 2 weeks' respite. Having been unhappy at our home, she was much happier there. We had some lovely times when I visited. Sadly she had a fatal stroke towards the end of the fortnight. The care home is very well
run. Cleanliness, comfort, care, and food are all good. The big thing is that care is good. The staff are all very helpful. The only slight downside is that space in the communal rooms is a bit limited, but that wouldn't stop me coming back.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.861)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.861) out of 10 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.861 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (237 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 274 Ratings = 4.861
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
