  • Doneraile Residential Care Home, Newton Abbot
Doneraile is a small, intimate residential care home in Newton Abbot for just 23 residents, part of the award-winning Rose Care Group. Its smaller size means the team can offer truly personalised care for people over 60 at sensible, transparent prices, without compromising high standards.

The home is manager-led, with a long-standing staff team, many of whom have been at Doneraile for years. This stability provides familiar faces, genuine trust and staff who know each resident well - their routines, interests and the small details that help them feel comfortable and at ease. The team sees itself as adding to the family’s care, not replacing it, and focuses on the right balance of independence, support and a sense of belonging.

Doneraile is designed to feel homely yet practical. There is a main lounge where residents can chat and socialise, a quiet lounge for reading or one-to-one time, and smaller spaces to relax with visitors or enjoy some peace. A veranda offers safe, open air for a gentle stroll or a cup of tea in the sun. With only 23 residents, shared spaces feel calm and familiar rather than busy. Activities include creative sessions, gentle exercise, games, coffee mornings, live entertainment and visits from the local reverend - always varied, but never forced.

The home supports a range of needs, particularly for those who prefer a less intimidating, more personalised setting. Whether someone simply wants to feel safe, needs help with day-to-day tasks, or is beginning to need extra support with their memory, care is adapted as needs change so residents can remain settled without the disruption of moving home. Doneraile aims to be a place where residents feel known, valued and part of a family. Prospective residents and their families are welcome to visit to see the home and meet the team.

Dad was so well cared for at Doneraile where he spent the last weeks of his life. He was made welcome from day 1 and the staff did everything they possibly could to enable him to join in with daily life in the home. As his health deteriorated they cared for him with professionalism but also compassion.
They engaged with him and tuned in to his sense of humour, never forgetting the character of the person they were caring for. I found the staff to be helpful and approachable - I could ring them anytime and they were honest and open with me. They were so supportive to me when Dad passed away and I can’t thank them enough for everything they did.
Reply from Hayley Holland, Regional Director at Doneraile Residential Care HomeThank you so much for your lovely comments. your dad was a pleasure to care for and we are all sorry for your loss.

My uncle went into the home after falling at home and needing recovery time. He was their for 4 weeks. The home couldn’t have been more attentive. The staff was lovely and caring and the food was good. Families were welcomed and my uncle loved the visits from the animal man. The home is in the process
of redecoration and has a fresh modern feel.

My mum had a period of recuperative care at Doneraile Care Home after a hip operation. They cared wonderfully for Mum until she was ready to return home. Always plenty of entertainment for the guests and the food was delicious and wholesome. The staff were warm and welcoming upon arrival as a visitor,
there is always a member of staff on hand to answer any questions we had.
I can't rate this care home highly enough!

My relative has been in respite care at Doneraile Care Home for 8 weeks. The staff have been warm and welcoming; upon arrival as a visitor, there is always a member of staff on hand. Advice from staff is given in a timely and professional manner - giving the impression that the patient is valued and
treated with respect. Meals are much enjoyed by my relative and she enjoys the caring atmosphere.

Although our father was only there a short time, he was cared for in a compassionate and caring environment. The care home staff were very diligent and proactive in identifying his illness and the need for urgent medical care.

My mother-in-law was met by both the new manager and some familiar faces. Made very welcome by everyone. The team looked after her very well whilst allowing her that important little piece of independence. She felt that people listened to her and tried to look after her individual needs. The best way
to sum this up is to confirm that she would be happy to return!

I have always dreaded the thought of going into any sort of 'home' but I have been very happy here. I have been allowed to stay in my own room, which has meant a lot to me as I do not enjoy any sort of communal experience. Being able to have privacy and quietness is very important to me. I have found
the staff here very helpful and the food is excellent. I hate cooking but love food!

My mother resided at Doneraile Residential Care Home from March 2020 through to her passing in December 2022. She suffered from dementia. Throughout her stay, the staff and management at Doneraile Care Home were exemplary. They demonstrated compassionate and professional care on a daily basis throughout.
The onset of covid and all that came with it presented many new and unforeseen difficulties and I think the entire Doneraile team under excellent management dealt with a difficult situation very well.

My mother spent the last six years of her life in Doneraile. She was treated, at all times, with care and compassion. The management and staff are professional and very kind. The property is clean and well kitted out. Doneraile has provided a superb service to my mother and to my sister and me. I am
very grateful to them.

I feel my mother is in extremely good hands with the staff caring for her at Doneraile Residential Care Home. They are friendly and courteous to her, and I have been allowed to speak with her at a good distance on a couple of occasions as maintaining residents safety, in general, is their key objective,
which I'm glad about.

My Godmother moved to Doneraile when she could not remain in her own home. It was, as for most people in a similar position, a difficult move, but she was very well looked after by the staff and she became comfortable in her surroundings.
I do not live in the area but was always kept well informed
of matters relating to my Godmother’s well-being and felt able to contact the staff for information and to discuss any queries.
As my Godmother became more frail and required end of life care, she was extremely well cared for and remained at peace.
I cannot fault my experience of Doneraile.

My mum spent 4 weeks in Doneraile and from the moment she arrived there from hospital she was treated with warmth, care, and kindness. Her room was lovely and peaceful. The staff were brilliant and their cheerfulness helped Mum to settle in quickly. The food was tasty and well presented and they went
out of their way to ensure Mum could eat and drink even though she didn't have a big appetite. As relatives, there was always someone on hand to let us know how Mum was doing and to include us in any discussions about her care and well-being.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.861)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.861) out of 10 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.861 for Doneraile Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (237 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 274 Ratings = 4.861
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Doneraile Residential Care Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
