The staff work extremely hard throughout the day and take great care of residents, sometimes under great pressure. They deal brilliantly and efficiently with all situations, even though it is obvious that they are short staffed.
The staff are a credit to the company but there is a need for more staff to ensure that the home continues to be of high quality.
I have to be honest I didn't want my mother to go into a home but I am now so grateful for The Lilacs as I know she is well looked after and very happy.

Thank you for your kind words. It is lovely to read about how well your mum is being looked after at The Lilacs and how great the care team there are. I have to address the suggestion that we are ever short staffed at The Lilacs. If we were short staffed we would likely not be able to deliver the high quality of service that your mum is benefitting from. Our care home managers have full control over staffing levels and our rota is created in line with the care needs of the residents living there at any given time. We have comprehensive back-up contracts in place with agency providers should we ever find our in house team unable to fill the rota (short term absence sickness or longer term recruitment gaps). The rota meets the care needs of our residents and our care fees are calculated in accordance with those care needs. Extra care hours could be provided, but at extra cost. I find the staff (and management) respond well to any criticism that comes their way, and I am grateful for that. Food is great, and her room is kept clean (although I have had to request a clean once). Her bible has gone missing and not found and residents often go into her room unexpectedly.

I am pleased to report that your Mum's bible has been found in a silver bag in her wardrobe. It's difficult to prevent residents from wandering into each others rooms - room doors can be locked but that generally creates the wrong atmosphere. I can only ask that you encourage your Mum to use her call bell if this does happen so one of the care team can attend and ask any resident who has entered to leave. Of course, if this is a persistent issues then please discuss with the care home manager so we can explore any other possible solutions. Again, thank you for your kind feedback. Good morning Bryan. Thank you for this kind and positive feedback relating to your experience with our Care Team and Care Home at The Lilacs in Exeter. Noting your comments about Management - The Lilacs is currently being ably supported by Emma, our Deputy Manager, along with regular on-site support from members of our Support office Team and other Managers within the group. We are currently actively recruiting a new manager and hope to be able to formally communicate a name and start date within a week or two. I'm surprised about your observation about the food on offer - I know the range is extensive and the quality excellent. If your wife would like to discuss food choices please, if she is able to do so, encourage her to speak to Emma. If she is not able then please could you discuss your concerns with Emma on your wife's behalf. I'm confident there will be a number of options that she will like. I'm concerned that there is a lot of waste - we will investigate this also. Nathan.

Very disappointed. My husband didn't like the hot food so only had a sandwich and yogurt twice a day plus some crisps and snacks. Consequently he has lost weight. The garden was lovely but what spoilt it were full ashtrays and flower pots full of cigarette buts. Some of the staff were helpful and nice but when my daughter, son in law and grandchildren visited they immediately got scanned without any explanation. Obviously the children were confused at to what was happening. We thought this was very rude and unnecessary. I collected my husband the evening before I was due to as he had been very agitated and had been shouting, he felt like he was in a prison. When we left no one said goodbye and I felt we left under a cloud, quite uncomfortable. My husbands bedroom smelt of urine when we arrived and was worse on one of my visits. Overall very disappointed.

Good morning MB. It is, of course, very disappointing to receive anything other than a glowing review. We are very sorry that you have felt the need to write it. I have spoken to the Care Home Manager and reviewed records etc. Whilst I only have 1000 characters here and am conscious of the need for discretion and dignity - I am able to reply as follows. Your husband was very happy at The Lilacs until the day he left. He ate well and regularly enjoyed the excellent hot food that we provide. We check all visitors temperature upon arrival as a high temperature is a clear indicator of illness - the UK has had a quad-demic of respiratory illness this year. It's difficult to address the smell of urine other than to say that the room did not smell of urine - but there may be times when there was a smell of urine present - and these are dealt with quickly. Our care team spent much time helping your husband and caring for him. Your review is a very unfair reflection of their dedication.

The staff at this home treat my mum with great patience and dignity and are very warm towards her. A great deal of effort is made with her likes and dislikes. The home is not luxurious but it is warm and homely and there always seems to be something organised for the residents.

It's lovely to read that your mum enjoyed her 100th Birthday and that the team were able to join in celebrating with her. I note what you say 'the home is not luxurious' and I agree - in all of our care homes we work really hard to ensure that we create a home-from-home feeling - we don't have a cinema room or sauna etc. at The Lilacs - but we don't (well, most of us) have those at home. We have lovely people with a cosy lounge (with a big TV) and a lovely bathroom. I have noted that you have only scored us 3 for cleanliness - we would certainly want a 5 for that! After living at The Lilacs for several years, as her Alzheimer's progressed, my mother died there on 8th February 2024. We were surrounded by care and compassion both during and after her final days. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble, and it was as though they were saying goodbye to one of their friends. I have nothing but praise for all the staff who looked after my mother during her years of residence. They knew her moods, likes and dislikes, and acted accordingly with kindness and understanding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the way you looked after her. I couldn't have asked for better.
