My darling mother has lived at Selkirk House for some 20 months now. As her health has deteriorated the level of care needed has increased. I cannot speak too highly of the kindness, compassion and good nature with which she is looked after, not just every day but several times a day.
The place is
amazing and is staffed by such incredible people from the Manager and the Deputy Manager, through team leaders and carers to the cleaning ladies and management staff. Every one of them is so kind, so professional and so caring.
I am so pleased I chose Selkirk Hpuse for my beautiful mother.

After a long search in and around the area, I came across Selkirk House. From the first meeting with the manager, I knew this was the place for my mum to live. I have not been disappointed. The care from the manager to team leaders, care staff, cleaners and not to forget to mention the activities staff
have all been one big excellent team to deliver and care for the residents. My mum is loved and cared for with lovely smiles, dignity and respect. She is happy, not stressed and has been kept busy. When not well, she is attended to on a regular basis, sitting and holding her hand, and comforting her. As a family, we also get a lot of support and each time we call or visit we are made so welcome, thank you.

During nearly two years that my wife has been a resident, I have been witness on many occasions to staff showing tact and patience, not only to my wife, but other residents also.
I give all staff full marks - 10/10

My Mum has been at Selkirk House now for 6 months and I could not praise them enough for their support and care in looking after her, which at the time was a very difficult decision to make. Mum is happy and safe which is a reassurance and calls it home now. She has settled in really well and has made
some good friends with the rest of the residents. The weekly program of activities is good and having a social media page is a great way for me to see what Mum has got up to during the week. The staff are flexible and supportive in continuing Mum's days out and regular routines.

The support and care received by my mother-in-law has been fantastic. All the staff are endlessly kind and very caring. My wife was very upset about having to put her mother into care, due to my illness but she too has nothing but praise for the care her mother receives. Breakfasts are fabulous and
the biscuits they make are delicious. Lunch and tea need to be looked at.
Reply from Lorraine Holden, Manager at Selkirk HouseThank you for taking the time to review Selkirk House and we are pleased you rate our overall experience as excellent. I will pass your kind comments regarding my team on. We have in recent weeks updated our dining room to ensure a more enjoyable dining experience, where all furniture and fittings have been chosen by our residents. We have recently had a change in kitchen staff and every lunch service, our Chef Manager discusses the meal with residents and gains their feedback. We have regular entertainment in and a varied activity planner, we have a dedicated activity champion, who offers one-to-one activities with your loved one, as she chooses not to participate in many group activities. We regularly review all aspects of living at Selkirk House and encourage residents and their loved ones to feedback to enable us to continually improve.

My mother has dementia and recently went into Selkirk House for respite with a view to permanent placement. It was initially traumatic for us all as Mum couldn't understand or remember why she was there. The staff and management were very understanding and supportive. They put lots of measures in place
to help Mum settle such as a buddy system. In the first few weeks, there was regular contact giving us feedback and reassurance. She has settled well and is flourishing as a result of the care and attention she is receiving. Everyone is friendly, approachable, warm and caring. The environment is bright and comfortable and there is a good program of activities to encourage residents to socialise and keep them stimulated.

I recently took Mum out for a short drive in the car. Beforehand I phoned Selkirk House. The lady in reception was very welcoming and promised to inform the staff that I would like Mum to be ready at 3.30 pm that day. Mum was appropriately dressed for a trip out and a staff member helped Mum, who was
feeling a little anxious, to get into the care with lots of patience, encouragement and caring words. Mm thoroughly enjoyed her trip.

food and activities provided are top-class! Overall, I can highly recommend Selkirk House in every respect.

My mum who is 93 years old and blind has been in Selkirk House since July 2023. She is always clean and dressed and we are extremely pleased with the care she receives, she goes to the dining room guided by a carer every day for meals which encourages her to eat. The staff, who are always polite and
caring speak to her by name and take her hand and say their name which is very important for someone who cannot see. Since being in Selkirk House Mum has made a friend who often sits in her room and it is so lovely to see them having tea and biscuits from the trolley together. Mum loves the activities and we were pleased to see that some have been adapted for Mum's loss of sight. The alpacas were a hit.
Overall, we are really pleased with Mum's care and do not feel anxious about her now. thank you to all the friendly and welcoming staff.

I cannot rate the staff at Selkirk House in Plymouth highly enough. The care and consideration shown for us as a family has been exemplary. My father has been in for a period of respite and knowing that he is in such safe hands makes me and my family relax. I’ve always said that you have to be a certain
type of person to be a carer and Selkirk has some of the very best in my opinion, especially the deputy manager who, from the dad’s assessment to day-to-day care has gone above and beyond. Thank you to you all.

My mum stayed as a respite client for eight weeks. She was taken care of in a holistic manner. Her clothes were all washed and kept perfect. She loved her room and the food. The staff were all very attentive to her needs. She would be more than happy to stay with you again. Thank you to everyone. Keep
up the good work. You all listen and aim to provide the best care possible.

The care team at Selkirk House have welcomed our mum with such warmth and care, which has helped our mum and my siblings enormously with the transition from home to care home. Mum has thrived and settled in well, thanks to the warmth, kindness and support that she has received. The staff even surprised
Mum on her birthday with a lovely cake - she was thrilled.
Thank you to all of the team.

All staff are very pleasant. Nothing is too much trouble. When I can't find any carers, I ask the kitchen staff, and they will find a carer for me to talk to. My mother is kept clean and tidy; this also applies to her room and bathroom. There are no undesirable smells throughout the whole building.
It's like a five-star hotel.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.740)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.740) out of 10 for Selkirk House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.740 for Selkirk House is calculated as follows: ( (263 Excellents x 5) + (71 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 342 Ratings = 4.74
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Selkirk House is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
