I have generally been impressed with the level of care given to my grandma. However, I phoned up to find out how my grandma was, and the senior carer not only could tell me in detail but also went the extra mile to help me speak to my grandma, who has dementia and can't hold the phone. The carer held
the phone for her, made sure she could hear me and tried to help her understand by showing her pictures. She went above and beyond!

Parents went into Selkirk in March. Both found it hard to deal with, and Dad went downhill, but it was still the best decision. Dad sadly passed away, but all the staff before, during and after have been amazing. And although Dad has now gone, Mum is going to stay there and is now loving it. It's clean,
smells fresh, and staff are always cheerful no matter what.

My mother-in-law has been living at Selkirk for 18-months or more. In that time, she has really settled in and enjoys the company of other residents and visits from the staff.
Throughout that time, all the staff have been excellent. They are kind, caring, and nothing is ever too much trouble. They
really do all work as a team in looking after the residents.
In December last year (2021), her daughter (my wife), died very quickly, which was a tremendous shock to her, and she took it very badly. All the staff rallied around and really helped and supported her during this very difficult period, spending extra time with her and being prepared to just sit and reassure her. One carer actually attended the funeral with her and was a massive support and consolation to her.
I would like to give sincere thanks to all the staff at Selkirk. Your work is really appreciated, and it is reassuring to know she is in a safe and supported place.

Selkirk House is like home from home. A very friendly although professional workforce. The care given is second to none, always abiding by Covid rules etc, to protect residents as well as staff. The food prepared is excellent homemade food and always enjoyed. Lots of activities in-house - overall, an
excellent choice of care home.

This was my first visit to a friend, who had only been a resident for one month and because of Covid-19, we had to meet in the garden only - but I was impressed with the staff and all I witnessed.

A good place for many to retire to. Good facilities and caring staff. Precautions over the Covid period have been good but has resulted in a lack of activities and residents having to spend too long in isolation.
Even now, with all the relaxation of precautions, there is a lack of organisation to
allow residents to become more active. I realise a shortage of staff has made things difficult, but residents have not even been encouraged to take exercise by walking the corridors. Someone needs to take responsibility for everyday activities.
Reply from Lorraine Holden, Home Manager at Selkirk HouseThank you for taking the time to review Selkirk House, and we are happy you rate our care and support as excellent. We are sorry to hear that you have been unhappy with the activities in the home. We have taken feedback on board, and we have recently employed a dedicated activities coordinator at Selkirk House who will start at the end of the month. This will enable our activities schedule to be more varied for our residents, and we will be asking for residents’ input on this. We will be happy to discuss this further with you at a mutually convenient time.

Selkirk House is a well-kept home, light, airy and feels welcoming. The manager has time for relatives, listens to concerns and responds appropriately. The past 18-months have been extremely challenging for the care sector. I appreciate the support that has been given to Mum when we have been unable
to see her in person.

The care given by the staff is excellent, and dignity is maintained by all staff towards our mother. The food is unimaginative and lacks flexibility, despite residents feedback at residents meetings. Ideas/suggestions seem to be greeted with enthusiasm but rarely implemented. Activities, also unimaginative
and regularly cancelled.
Reply from Lorraine Holden, Home Manager at Selkirk HouseThank you for the time to review Selkirk House, and we are pleased that you rate our staff as excellent. Our new Chef Manager will look to review the homes menu with all residents and discuss the variety of meal options that will be available. Our Team Leader and Activities coordinator are currently working on a new schedule that will provide residents with a wider range of activities to enjoy moving forward.

Very professional and caring, friendly staff. Mum has been very happy with the care from all staff. There were difficulties with activities during the pandemic, hopefully, this will improve with the changing of rules. It will certainly help with the mental health and the morale of residents.

My 91-year-old Mother moved into Selkirk House at the beginning of January 2017. Both of us were grateful that she made that transition as life at home was becoming precarious. I always felt that the combination of having her own room surrounded by her own possessions but accompanied by 24/7 care when
required was ideal, and so it proved with several trips to hospital over her four years of residence which were always handled effectively and with compassion. She died last week (January 2021) at the age of 95. I am extremely appreciative for the care and compassion of the team that nursed her during those final days. This was particularly important as I am an only child and live in Worcestershire, and none of us could predict the impact of the COVID pandemic on our lives and ability to travel. In her conversations with me in person and on the telephone, she always stated how much she appreciated being able to live her final years at Selkirk.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.765)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.765) out of 10 for Selkirk House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 31 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.765 for Selkirk House is calculated as follows: ( (290 Excellents x 5) + (68 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 366 Ratings = 4.765
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Selkirk House is based on 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 31 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
