Fairlawn is a warm and friendly residential and dementia care home in the heart of Ferndown, Dorset, offering compassionate care in a home-from-home atmosphere.

Fairlawn has 60 ensuite bedrooms over three floors and plenty of communal areas for residents to relax or socialise in, including a conservatory with direct access to a beautiful garden.

The experienced and well trained team at Fairlawn provides care for those who can no longer live independently, whether they are physically frail or suffering from dementia. All residents can enjoy a wide variety of activities and entertainment in and around the home, plus outings in the Care South minibus to local landmarks and attractions.

I attended in August with my husband. We found the staff to be very friendly and courteous. We found the building to be of an excellent standard with regard to cleanliness and decor. We feel that my mother-in-law will receive excellent care and seems settled and happy here.

My husband has Alzheimer's and after a fall was sent for rehabilitation, after a broken hip, to Fairlawn. I have always found all the staff helpful, friendly and reassuring. He has been cared for since and although I have found the situation heartbreaking for me, I realise he is receiving excellent
care as he remains physically very well. I am thankful and grateful for the care he receives.

My mother spent 8 years at Fairlawn, until her recent death in May. During that time, apart from some bouts of anxiety, I believe she was extremely happy. she was under the care of ever changing personnel in the latter years, but practically without exception all the staff were caring, empathetic and
professional with her. Cheery words, a joke and banter without ever overstepping the marl. This applied from management to kitchen staff and a truly lovely cleaning lady. There was also an activities lady who became close to Mum on a religious level. In these testing times I do home all recruitment of staff can be spared and provided training to keep up these high standards.

The home have worked well under extreme circumstances and changing staff, however, continuity needs addressing. I cannot rate the home as Mum was admitted during lockdown, I have therefore not had admittance. At the beginning, there were teething problems. Communication between staff and relatives needs
to be reviewed. I am not made aware of problems quickly enough and I could have rectified them.

We would refer you to the Compliment For Carers area of our website, where it can be seen that the vast majority of relatives are delighted with the extraordinary lengths our staff have gone to keep their loved ones safe. The Care Quality Commission has also just visited Fairlawn and rated it Good in all areas, stating in their report “People and their relatives told us [changes and Coronavirus restrictions] had been managed well.” Nevertheless, we are sorry that you have had concerns and our new Home Manager will liaise closely with you so that we can meet with your expectations.

My neighbour has been in the care home for over a year. He has always spoken highly of the care staff and he is always neatly turned out.
When I visit all the staff are very helpful and show kindness and care to my friend.

My father had to go into Fairlawn for a short time for respite, to let my mum recover as she was his carer and had a few health problems. My dad, being 97, was very well looked after but had given up and had had enough - which I get!
Unfortunately after 3 weeks, he passed away but it was very peaceful
and he was in no pain and I couldn’t have wished for a more painless end. We were able to spend precious ‘end of life’ time with him even in these ‘odd’ times and for that I am extremely grateful - so thank you to all at the nursing home - you did a fabulous job and I admire you all for the work you do.

My husband is so happy and content at Fairlawn Care Home at Ferndown, Dorset. Our three children(adult) agree with me that we can't fault Fairlawn - everything about it including the decor. The staff are absolutely amazing. They always acknowledge us and smiling, and nothing is too much trouble when
we request something. There are times when things must be difficult for them. Congratulations on your achievements.

I find all the staff very friendly and extremely helpful. All rooms and joint facilities are kept very clean, also if there is anything you require they will do their very best to obtain it for you. The activities staff often visit if there is anything you would like to do eg quizzes, games, gardening
to name but a few and they will try to include it in the programme if at all possible.

Fairlawn care home has provided exceptional care for my mum, who has Alzheimer's. They have been very efficient during the covid19 crisis in all areas. In order to allow the family some time with their loved one, they erected a gazebo in the garden where we can meet, socially distanced, but sheltered
from the elements. As a family, we really appreciate this.

I have found nothing but compassion, love, care and dedication to my mother. I could not ask for a better place at this time for my mother to be. They truly are the second family in all they do when we, as a family, are not able to be with her. I thank them all so much for all they have done and know

This care provider had no 'exceptional' policy in place for families being with their loved ones at end of life. Just allowed one day 'at an appropriate time' - how do you decide when this time is? They are not aligned with other care homes, do not reply to emails, have no flexibility to work with families
for the good of each case/resident and have no logic in applying 'infection control'. They claim to be keeping residents COVID-free, but none of the staff are tested. They didn't have the common sense to think outside their very small box, to allow us access to our dying mother, who was bereaved of her husband in March and had no physical contact with her family since. She didn't get COVID, but passed away in sadness and with lack of family contact. This care provider showed no compassion for my mother at all, despite all reasonable requests and suggestions from us, to try and make this work so we could be with her. The CEO has said in writing that he has been 'transparent'.

It is incredibly hard to hear of the distress that Care South’s end-of-life visiting policy have caused this family. The policy complies with Government guidance. The family have publicly disagreed with the visiting policy across many media channels, whilst at the same time also publicly acknowledging the good care that Fairlawn’s carer’s provided for their mother. The policy is one that has been devised with our primary responsibility to safeguard the interests of all of our residents and dedicated teams of carers in our care homes throughout this pandemic.
We do encourage end of life visits. Two of the family members were able to spend a full day with their mother on the Sunday before she passed away peacefully surrounded by dedicated carers who were very fond of her and who had her very best interests at heart at all times. We very much regret that we were unable to meet this family’s expectations and are truly sorry for the heartache that this has caused.

Since my husband came into Fairlawn, I personally have been treated with sympathy, kindness and compassion by all staff and my husband has been made to feel welcome, cared for and respected.
When we encountered a problem recently, I was extremely impressed with the manner in which the management went

Carers dedicated, very amicable, treat my wife with friendly respect and nothing is too much trouble.
Quite happy for her to stay as she is safe and cared for.
Unfortunately, a shortage of carers at times is a notable problem (throughout the area).
Food is marked as good - but I haven't tasted it!

Rooms adequate, staff helpful. My wife is treated with reasonable care and dignity. I can't remark on meals because I am never there to see.
Cleanliness is very good.
But I do think a member of the staff should be in the rest room all the time the residents are there. There are long times when staff
are not there. My wife has no complaints, if she is happy I'm happy.

As husband of resident, I sleep well relaxed in the knowledge that my wife is getting thoughtful and kind care all of the time. I am with her every day and would quickly see any change in Fairlawn.

Staff are very helpful and address any problems with tact and understanding. They are always cheerful and helpful. My wife is happy and I am also. Activities are only for third floor on Wednesday morning and this is not enough.

My mother, a resident at Fairlawns for 5 years, is very well cared for. Occasionally she has needed medical care and this has been provided without delay. The level of staff care and support during these times of need is excellent, and I'm kept fully and quickly informed of changes.
Mom is completely
content in her home, and her relationship with the staff is a delight to see. Their understanding of her needs, both physical and emotional, is excellent.
She doesn't always choose to join in with activities, which is respected and understood by the staff, but she readily accepts invitations to trips out and has had some memorable, yes! memorable, visits to local events. Her joy on these occasions delights her accompanying carers and the appreciation and value of these jaunts is heartwarming.
The accommodation, which includes some of her own meaningful furniture, is simple and comfortable. Meals are simple, nutritious and familiar to Mom and perfectly appropriate.
