My father was a resident at Poplars Nursing home for 3 years. My family and I would like to thank all the staff who looked after my father and treated him with love, respect and compassion while he lived there. All the staff including carers, nurses, kitchen staff and domestic staff were amazing and
the staff were very good to us as a family when we visited especially towards my mum.

My father very sadly passed away in June 2025 - the care given to him in his last weeks at the home by all the staff was exceptional as he was very ill. I would like to thank the staff for the lovely flowers at the funeral and their attendance at the funeral.

We as a family would not hesitate to recommend the home to anyone considering it for their family member.

My mom has been with Poplars Nursing Home for 7 months now and only yesterday it was her 100th birthday. The day was fabulous mainly down to the management and staff at Poplars who did everything possible for Mum to make the day special, as indeed it should be. Furthermore, we wish to thank Poplar Nursing
Home for the care given to Mother during the months prior to achieving this epic milestone, thank you again to everyone involved.
Many many thanks from us.

My Mom's final 2 weeks in the care home were so lovely as she was cared for by some amazing staff. The attitude and time they had to spend with her was incredible. I would definitely recommend Poplars Care Home.

I would like to thank all the staff who looked after my mom with the utmost respect and love and treated her as one of their own family.
My mom was only there for a short time, but they made her last weeks very comfortable. They could not do enough for her and for us, too, as a family when we visited.
I would highly recommend this care home to anyone considering it.

I'm happy with the level of care my dad has received since he's been at the care home. The staff have worked well with Dad. When he arrived at the care home, Dad was being hoisted now he's able to stand and walk again, which we are pleased with.

My cousin's husband was in the home sadly only for a few months. During his time there, the family cannot thank the carers enough for the excellent care they provided to our family members. They showed such affection and would do anything for our family member but also for the family visitors. They
provided excellent support to us all during the last few weeks. The accommodation was excellent and so was the food. Every effort was made to keep the room and home, in general, clean. It was going through a refurbishment. Thank you so much from his wife, who misses him dearly.

The staff are accommodating and friendly, my father can be quite demanding but they do understand his needs. More care should be taken when washing clothes as on a couple of occasions my father has had his mobile washed which he does rely on because he likes us to call him during the day and keeps him
happy. Bedding could be improved on as sheets sometimes don't fit and I would think can be uncomfortable.

Very satisfying to see my father being cared for very well, staff are well trained and very welcoming, the home is clean and very well run. The staff are knowledgeable and seems they cannot do enough to see that my father is comfortable.

My Nan was at The Poplars for over five years but recently passed away. Nan was very poorly when she arrived at The Poplars, she had lost lots of weight. The care staff were brilliant, encouraged her to eat and sat her with other residents so she was not isolated. You can clearly see how dedicated the
care staff are, they sang with her and were always friendly. I would like to thank them for giving Nan a home and looking after her.

My husband was admitted (temporary) here, after breaking his hip. He has mixed dementia, cannot communicate and is very challenging. In fact, the family thought he would never walk again. You can imagine what kind of state I was in. However, the staff from the top to the bottom, are absolutely wonderful,
the atmosphere is great and nothing is too much trouble for them. It’s like one big family. In fact, I was so happy with them, I decided to keep him there permanently. There are also a couple of individuals who go over and above their job description. They have now got my husband walking and even his communication has improved. I’m absolutely amazed and believe it or not, I can now sleep at night knowing he is being cared for well. I cannot thank them enough. They now have a new manager, who is putting all new systems and activities in place and whose door is always open to discuss any worries you may have. Keep it up Poplars, as you will gather, you are very popular with me.

It will be three years come Christmas Eve, since I encountered the Poplars Nursing Home who, at the time, were the only nursing home to say 'yes' to admitting my Auntie Dorothy. Things had become critical at the time. Since then I have been visiting regularly though not as often as I would like on account
of our location in Huddersfield and the fact that I am out of the country for long periods of time. I have wondered if I had done the right thing. However, I observe the staff every time I come and also the 'guests', some of whom are really challenging.

My conclusion is that the culture of the place is sound. The staff appear to be very caring and good humoured. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Family often criticize care homes, which is very easy to do. Things cannot be perfect all the time and staff cannot be everywhere at once. My view is that the staff have the right priorities and care what they are doing. So, well done and keep up the good work!

We visit on a regular basis and sometimes do not see anybody at all upstairs, sometimes left on own for ages not seeing any body to talk to. Know staff have lots of residents to look after but some get lonely and left in bed. I know residents can't be forced to get up, but should be encouraged more.
Quite upsetting sometimes to see our loved one just dwindling away, instead of mixing with other residents. End of life care can be very lonely when you have got your senses.

Was welcoming at first then noticed a lot of staff either not turning up for their shift, not working together or leaving. After a few issues that I have raised with the Manager, things are slowly getting better. There is a small group of carers that work hard and are friendly, however, the care is
getting better with my Dad.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.557)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.557) out of 10 for The Poplars Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.837 for The Poplars Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (37 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 43 Ratings = 4.837
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.72 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars Nursing Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.345
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
