It is my mother's first experience of a nursing/care home and it is proving to be an excellent one.
At age 98, blind and recovering from a hip operation, she receives a high level of nursing/care and this is met by experienced staff with a caring attitude.
Special mention should be made of the choice
and high standard of the food.

Mum has been at Barrowhill Hall since October 2017. She always looks very happy and content. Her appearance clean and smart as she would like to be.
Her anxiety has reduced and looks very much at home, 24hr care by caring positive people around her has helped enormously. Bright, airy surroundings in
comfy clean and environment. There are lots of activities to keep residents amused. All in all a lovely place for her to live.

In the two years that my mum has been a resident at Barrowhill Hall, she has continued to thrive. I have been impressed by the level of care, in particular, the way my mum is treated as a person despite having dementia. The term 'carer' most definitely applies to the staff who really do care. Mum was
taken to Blackpool last September on an overnight trip with a number of other residents, which is something she loved and will never forget.

As a family, we have been more than satisfied with the support and care offered by the staff to my mum and to us as a family.
The atmosphere has always been most welcoming, open and hospitable despite the severe difficulties presented to them by my mother.
Other positives include the cleanliness,
sensitivity to residents' needs and most importantly the amazing sense of humour displayed by the staff.
My brother and I were impressed when we first walked into the home.
We have not been disappointed.

Professional but kind and with respect is shown to my mother.
She has only been there a month and she has settled better than we thought.
She has been in another dementia home but never settled.
It just proves with the right managing of her condition how different she is.

My father was a resident of the Churnet Lodge for just over a year until he passed away January 2018, I have to say the care he received was first class, the staff were very caring especially so in his final days, they really did everything they could to make my father's final days as comfortable as
possible, showing the most dedicated care. He was happy there as the staff looked after him so well. And he came to accept this was his home. It took him a while to settle in but this was the dementia, not my dad. Thanking every one of the staff there that looked after him so well.

My husband is in Churnet Lodge, the residential part of Barrowhill Hall. The care he has received there is excellent. I could not ask for better. The staff are so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. I spent part of Christmas day with my dear husband and the lunch provided was so much
like my cooking it was just wonderful. This care home must really be rated as excellent.

After 7 weeks lying in a hospital bed refusing food, fluids and medication mum was sent to the above home for palliative care with very little hope of ever getting out of bed again. Within 2 weeks of being in the home, she was eating, drinking and up and dressed. This wonderful place and all of its
fabulous staff have given me back my mum. Thank you!

All staff are caring, friendly and respectful to residents. Whenever I go to visit I am always made to feel welcome. The residents are all treated according to individual needs. Improvements are continually being made wherever possible. I have quite often been there at lunchtime and the food is very
good. Freshly prepared, nutritious and enjoyable. There is a good activities team in place which keeps the residents stimulated. Overall the home is kept to a high standard, very clean and tidy.

It is very early days n my case but so far, I have been very impressed with the service provided. We had an emergency which was dealt with quickly and efficiently.
It would be good if they had a published list of room rates for the various categories of aspect and level of care needed.

My father had been to two previous nursing homes prior to a hospital admission. The care in these previous homes was not good at all so I was very anxious about his placement anywhere.
However, staff have taken an interest in my father. they seem educated (which leads me to believe they are valued
by management) and compassionate. Dad has settled well and they allow him to be himself. They try and cater for individual needs, making residents feel significant. Any concerns I have had have been immediately addressed.

The staff are very friendly and kind and the rooms are extremely comfortable, however, on three occasions, there was a problem with other residents entering my mother's room causing a little concern, especially at night. This issue has now been resolved and she locks her door if she wants to be alone.
I realise it is difficult as other residents may be confused.

My mother is very happy at Barrowhill. She says the staff are wonderful. They always treat her with care and respect. Her room is comfortable and she enjoys the convenience of the en-suite wet room. The food is excellent. My mother particularly enjoys the various activities which are extensive and very
well organised.

Having spent several weeks researching care home for my father, who has early stage dementia, we settled on Barrowhill as being the most suitable for his needs and have nothing but praise for the environment, facilities and staff.
From day one, they showed consideration, knowledge and experience and
supported us in the transition. The staff have a deep understanding of his individual needs and are constantly working with him to achieve these aims.
We are always made to feel welcome whatever time we visit and it is reassuring for us to know he is so well cared for and we no longer have to worry about him.

My Mother-in-law has settled very quickly into a new regime, after losing her husband of 65 years. She was in shock having been looked after by her husband for 15 years with dementia. The home have cared for her as part of a large family. She is now eating healthy, tasty meals and putting on weight.
She
never asks to go back home and always has a smiley happy face.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.088)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.088) out of 10 for Barrowhill Hall Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 13 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.477 for Barrowhill Hall Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (108 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (9 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 155 Ratings = 4.477
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.611 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barrowhill Hall Residential and Nursing Home is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8. 12 Positive Reviews ÷ 14.8 = 0.811
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

“It's hard to describe a typical day at Barrowhill for me as every single day is different, you have to react to what is going on. But generally, I attend the morning meeting with all the heads of department, produce daily reports to Head Office and it’s my job to do the induction training for new staff.

“My favourite part of Barrowhill has to be the views. They really are spectacular, especially the walk down to Churnet Lodge from the main building. The view simply takes your breath away, it has to be seen to be believed!

“I hope that when families visit their loved ones they leave Barrowhill knowing that their relatives are being well cared for and they are happy and safe.

“I’ve worked here for just over 6 months now. Before that, I worked at Aggregate industries for more than 38 years.

After I took redundancy I realised I needed a change and I felt it would be nice to work in a different field and the people here make it a much more interesting place to work.

“Outside of work I love Football, I love going to watch Derby County FC and I'm the secretary of Mayfield FC!

“I’m from Mayfield where I still live with my husband. We’re lucky as all of our close family live nearby. Perhaps it’s because I come from Derbyshire and not Staffordshire that I don't like oatcakes!”
