Holbrook Hall is a highly regarded care home in Holbrook, Belper. It is a splendid William and Mary period country house set in 4 acres of beautiful, well-stocked gardens.

In 1985 it was converted to a residential care home for the elderly containing 35 fine individual bedrooms, the majority with en-suite facilities/wet rooms and superb views across the adjacent gardens and beautiful countryside.

Holbrook Hall has had the pleasure to care for many people, from short-term respite care and daytime care to full-time residents.

Keeping their residents happy is of prime concern and as their Facebook page will vouch; they are forever thinking of different ways to entertain their guests.

The home has a well-earned reputation for conforming to the highest standards of care, safety, comfort and cuisine and has the testimonials to prove it!

An excellent residential home.
Mum has been very happy at Holbrook Hall with excellent support from the staff.
She has thoroughly enjoyed the meals served and particularly enjoys the singing and dancing and church service activities.

During my stay, I was disappointed with the cooked meals. The veg was waterlogged. Most meals were overcooked. Other residents also complained to me about the food. My respite room was fine. From the room, it was a long way to the dining room and sitting room.
Reply from Morag Vaughan, Managing Director at Holbrook HallThank you so much for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback on your recent stay with us. I was surprised and disappointed to read your comments regarding your meals as we pride ourselves on providing high-quality cuisine, freshly prepared, using reputable local suppliers. However, I appreciate that not everything was to your taste and deeply regret that this was not brought to our attention, as our chef would have gladly accommodated your wishes.

My mother moved here after a long period of living alone when following a fall she could no longer cope at home. It was a huge adjustment for her and although she would still prefer to be in her own home she repeatedly says how well she is looked after. She also says that the staff are very kind. She
can't participate in most of the varied activities but appreciates a group that meets in response to suggestions from her friends

My 92-year-old aunt began her association with Holbrook Hall a few years ago for respite care when we were away. When she needed more permanent care we knew exactly who to ask and where she would prefer to go. The staff welcomed her like an old friend and my aunt lived there very happily until she developed
an aggressive form of dementia. We feared that her needs would no longer be appropriate for Holbrook but to our immense relief, the staff willingly and readily agreed to continue caring for her even as she worsened rapidly. Her exemplary care whilst always respecting her dignity never faltered during all her time there and very importantly in her last few days. We were also so well cared for as we sat by her bed waiting for the inevitable. There is no easy way to prepare for the death of a loved one and there is no perfect place to die - that said Holbrook stepped up to the mark in every respect, supporting my aunt and supporting us. For that we will always be grateful. Thank you.

My uncle chose to come to Holbrook Hall in 2016 as he deteriorated and could not manage at home anymore. He enjoys the company around him knowing he is safe 24/7. He enjoys the variety of food, it's a good standard. The carers are always happy to help no matter what. Always good entertainments and trips
out. I would recommend this home to anyone very good 1st class.

My mother is cared for extremely well at Holbrook, I visit once a month for two days and the staff are always kind and caring and go out of their way to help anyone they see needs support.
My mother is always well dressed and has her hair done once a week. She recently celebrated her 97th birthday
and the staff arranged a private lunch for our family in the panelled drawing room which made it a very special day. The food was excellent and a special cake was made for her tea later. My mother's room, although small, is always clean and tidy and the bathroom is clean.

Mum was in Holbrook Residential Home in Derbyshire for approximately 5 years and had the most incredible care and was very happy. In November she had a fall and fractured her hip which caused other complications and was very poorly. Amazingly, when she was well enough to leave the hospital, Holbrook
said that they would like to have her back at the home which we didn't expect. They gave her the most incredible care until she, sadly, passed away in February. The family are so very grateful to all of the staff for the love and care they gave to her.

A warm welcome and I found my grandma happy, warm and relaxed in one of the lounges. We moved to the conservatory where we could all sit down and were kindly offered a drink by the staff. My grandma had had another excellent meal that lunchtime and had put in her teatime order. The food is marvellous
at Holbrook. The staff are kind and patient with residents and guests and so very helpful. The house and rooms are spotless and cosy and the gardens are beautiful to look out on and walk round.

I cannot fault Holbrook and I am very reassured knowing my grandma is a resident at this fantastic place.

My 90-year-old father required respite care after 2 falls at home followed by an admission to hospital for 6 days as we had a planned holiday for 4 days on his discharge date. I visited Holbrook on the Friday and a bed was available for him for the Monday. On return on the Friday, we called to collect
him to take him home and he asked if he could stay for a further 2 days. We were amazed as he'd always said that he would NEVER go into either a residential / nursing home! The experience has been so positive that he is already planning another respite visit when we go away for 2 weeks next April!!
Thank you to all the friendly staff and excellent food he enjoyed and for showing him that a residential home can feel like a hotel but with more staff around.

Holbrook Hall provides a very caring and safe environment in a beautiful country house with well-maintained gardens and stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Mum enjoys being in the home, and feels safe and well cared for. The staff are lovely, very friendly and go the extra mile to ensure
the residents are well cared for but remain independent and maintain their dignity. The home offers a varied timetable of activities which residents are encouraged to take part in.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.813)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.813) out of 10 for Holbrook Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for Holbrook Hall is calculated as follows: ( (332 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 395 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Holbrook Hall is based on 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 33 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I developed skills both through life experiences and academic studies in health and social care which enabled me to progress to the role of a Deputy Manager and onto a Registered Manager, which I have been for over 8 years.

I believe that the key to managing a great care home is sound leaderships skills, excellent communication and candour and that anything is possible with risk management. I have bult solid professional relationships with residents and their families and external professional services.

Working in adult care is wonderful and I feel it is a privilege and honour that the residents at Holbrook Hall have allowed me into their lives. I work closely with staff and the residents so that their goals and milestones are achievable and help them to make magical memories they thought would be impossible, possible.
