Overview

The Review Score of 8.9 (maximum of 10) for The Shrubbery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 12 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Shrubbery in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.708 for The Shrubbery is calculated as follows: ( (102 Excellents x 5) + (42 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 144 Ratings = 4.708

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.194 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Shrubbery is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.75

    2. Target of 9 positive Reviews (45 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 4 Reviews ÷ 9 Target = 0.444

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

8.9 The Shrubbery has a Review Score of 8.9 (8.902) from 12 Reviews

We can all appreciate how difficult it is to come to terms with and how traumatic it can be on the transitional period, not only for Mum but all the different emotions we are all experiencing. The Manageress and deputy, with their expertise, made the move for us much less painful for us on that transition and all the staff were there to welcome Mum with their cheery smiles and warm hearts.
We, as a family are made more than welcome to visit as often as we wish at any time, including meal times where Dad is welcome to dine with Mum in one of the dining rooms.
On entering the home there is always a hello from all the staff and laughter in the corridors. The Cooks work exceptionally hard to produce some lovely meals, whether it be homemade soup and a variety of sandwiches, or a roast!
The home always smells very pleasant and no odours as found in some homes.
Thank you to you all.

Sue Hanspaul, Director at The Shrubbery responded to this review on 27 Mar 2018:

Dear Marion

Thank you for your very kind review for which we are most grateful. Best wishes from us all at The Shrubbery.

I picked The Shrubbery after reading the reviews and by word of mouth. The manager and her deputy have been so helpful and supportive to us as a family when Mum first went into the home in February 2018. They are always there to talk us through our concerns and advice on how to deal with various situations.
When we visit Mum the staff are all so friendly and always smiling so it gives the home a happy atmosphere and when we leave at the end of our visit, if we ask, one of the staff will go in and talk to Mum to make sure she is ok.
The home is always clean and smells fresh which is a nice greeting when you open the front door!
I would have no hesitation in recommending this care home to others as I feel we have chosen the right one for Mum.

Sadly my mother recently died after a stay of nearly four years at The Shrubbery. During that time the staff and management could not have been more caring towards her. My mother did not want to go into a care home, something I am sure most people would prefer to avoid however the staff were so patient and understanding and she soon settled in and for many months became more independent and sociable than she had been for some time in her own home.

In the year before her death, my mother's care needs greatly increased and indeed she was bed bound for a number of months. Again despite the high level of care she needed, the staff cared for her with such patience even when she appeared to resent their care. They ensured she was safe and her dignity preserved throughout and I can not thank them enough.

Mum has been in this home for about 15 months now. When she went there, I never thought that she would still be alive now.
The care is excellent, any medical needs are dealt with either by the district nurse or local GP. Even though mum's mental health has deteriorated, generally she is good for someone heading for her 95th birthday.

Sue Hanspaul, Director at The Shrubbery responded to this review on 10 Aug 2017:

Dear Val

Thank you for your very kind review. We are most grateful.

Sue

Our father has always been a very independent man, albeit until very recently. Alas, he began to show signs of forgetfulness which we felt was affecting his everyday normal routine.
We heard of the Shrubbery in Higham Ferrers and the excellent reports that went with it. Both my sister and I went along to discover this for ourselves, I must say at this point, how truly astounded at the level of care, professionalism and attention to detail that was displayed in all areas.
Furthermore, we would like to thank the manager for all her hard work and for being so very accommodating at such short notice.
Our father is a different person, in such a positive way, all thanks to the Manager and her team.
Thank you so much for that extra special touch that has made such a dear "Father" very happy.

Mum has been at The Shrubbery since Nov 15. My brother & I had looked at other homes before this one and on walking through the door, we immediately felt better. At last - a care home that felt like home!

There was a lovely display of things made by the residents in reception - that first impression was so good and it has stayed with us. There was a lively atmosphere, lots going on and a lot of laughter. And that was before we had been there 5 minutes!

We are so grateful to everybody at The Shrubbery. Mum took a while to settle in as she has dementia but the experience of the team meant that they watched and evaluated mum’s needs on a very personal level and had soon worked out the best way to care for her.

We were told to treat the home as we would if it was our home, it is easy to do so.

Always time to talk if we have any questions and we have regular reviews.

1000 letters not enough to say all I wanted to but THANK YOU ALL so very much. You are the best.

My husband's 97-year-old aunt has been a resident at The Shrubbery for the past two years. Prior to that, she had been a resident at two other care homes since 2002. In the past, as a registered nurse, I was a care manager and a member of a care standards inspection team, so I know what to expect of a good care home.
During the introductory interview, it was clear that the registered manager was a very capable and caring person with a detailed knowledge and understanding of her specialised client group.
Our aunt has always been very particular about her personal appearance but as her dementia has deteriorated she has become a challenge for the care staff. In spite of this, they have done their best to maintain her appearance at all times as we found on our normal regular and random visits. She is now totally dependant on the care staff for all aspects of her daily living and yet they always treat her with great kindness and dignity. Her room is always kept as she would have wanted. As a former professional, I recognise that this standard of care is dependant upon sound structures and procedures determined by the home management and any small issues that we have found have always been dealt with promptly when brought to the attention of supervisory staff or management. The Shrubbery is a very friendly and welcoming care home which I can thoroughly recommend. It goes the extra mile.

The staff are very attentive, and nothing is too much trouble. They care and want to do the best for all the people there. The manager is both kind, supportive and extremely professional. My mother is very clean, extremely well looked after. The food is of a good quality with choice and decent portions.

My uncle was admitted in January this year. We have found the staff to be excellent, caring and kind. The staffing levels are high and there is always someone on hand. The staff are obviously hand picked for their patience and understanding as nothing is too much trouble. Sometimes it must be extremely difficult for them to cope with the situations presented to them but they do so, always smiling. The manager and her team deserve 10/10 for their care plan. I feel every resident is catered for on a one to one basis. It feels like home from home. Nothing is too much trouble. Well done

Having to look for a care home for my mother in law has been a very worrying and sad time for all the family. But on finding The Shrubbery all that changed, we were greeted at the door by friendly staff and shown around the home by the head of care. Unlike the other care homes we have visited The Shrubbery has a homely feel to it and we were instantly put at ease. The rooms are light, airy, and clean and decorated to a high standard. I especially like the way the corridors are decorated, with pictures of cats, London buses, red telephone boxes and a sensory wall for residents to touch and feel. There are plenty of fresh flowers around and window scenes of forests and beach views.
We were told when first looking at The Shrubbery, 'our home is your home', and we are certainly made to feel at home whenever we visit. It has a feel of one big happy family, the staff are always friendly and fun, and the residents all look content and happy.
My mother in law loves the food provided and we are able to join her for meals whenever we wish, there is always a great choice. We are offered cups of tea when we visit and the staff are always at hand to answer any questions and to help with mum if we want to take her for a walk outside.
My mother in law has parkinsons disease and since being at the Shrubbery her mobility has greatly improved, I believe this is due to the extra time the care staff take to assist with her with walking.
It is a great peace of mind to not have to worry about mum, and to know that she is getting the best care available. On my last visit she said ' I am glad I am home', as a family we can't ask for more than that! We would recommend this home to anyone looking for excellent care for a loved one, and would like to thank all the staff for making our mum feel so at home.
