My husband's 97-year-old aunt has been a resident at The Shrubbery for the past two years. Prior to that, she had been a resident at two other care homes since 2002. In the past, as a registered nurse, I was a care manager and a member of a care standards inspection team, so I know what to expect of
a good care home.
During the introductory interview, it was clear that the registered manager was a very capable and caring person with a detailed knowledge and understanding of her specialised client group.
Our aunt has always been very particular about her personal appearance but as her dementia has deteriorated she has become a challenge for the care staff. In spite of this, they have done their best to maintain her appearance at all times as we found on our normal regular and random visits. She is now totally dependant on the care staff for all aspects of her daily living and yet they always treat her with great kindness and dignity. Her room is always kept as she would have wanted. As a former professional, I recognise that this standard of care is dependant upon sound structures and procedures determined by the home management and any small issues that we have found have always been dealt with promptly when brought to the attention of supervisory staff or management. The Shrubbery is a very friendly and welcoming care home which I can thoroughly recommend. It goes the extra mile.

The staff are very attentive, and nothing is too much trouble. They care and want to do the best for all the people there. The manager is both kind, supportive and extremely professional. My mother is very clean, extremely well looked after. The food is of a good quality with choice and decent portions.

My uncle was admitted in January this year. We have found the staff to be excellent, caring and kind. The staffing levels are high and there is always someone on hand. The staff are obviously hand picked for their patience and understanding as nothing is too much trouble. Sometimes it must be
extremely difficult for them to cope with the situations presented to them but they do so, always smiling. The manager and her team deserve 10/10 for their care plan. I feel every resident is catered for on a one to one basis. It feels like home from home. Nothing is too much trouble. Well done

Having to look for a care home for my mother in law has been a very worrying and sad time for all the family. But on finding The Shrubbery all that changed, we were greeted at the door by friendly staff and shown around the home by the head of care. Unlike the other care homes we have visited The Shrubbery
has a homely feel to it and we were instantly put at ease. The rooms are light, airy, and clean and decorated to a high standard. I especially like the way the corridors are decorated, with pictures of cats, London buses, red telephone boxes and a sensory wall for residents to touch and feel. There are plenty of fresh flowers around and window scenes of forests and beach views.
We were told when first looking at The Shrubbery, 'our home is your home', and we are certainly made to feel at home whenever we visit. It has a feel of one big happy family, the staff are always friendly and fun, and the residents all look content and happy.
My mother in law loves the food provided and we are able to join her for meals whenever we wish, there is always a great choice. We are offered cups of tea when we visit and the staff are always at hand to answer any questions and to help with mum if we want to take her for a walk outside.
My mother in law has parkinsons disease and since being at the Shrubbery her mobility has greatly improved, I believe this is due to the extra time the care staff take to assist with her with walking.
It is a great peace of mind to not have to worry about mum, and to know that she is getting the best care available. On my last visit she said ' I am glad I am home', as a family we can't ask for more than that! We would recommend this home to anyone looking for excellent care for a loved one, and would like to thank all the staff for making our mum feel so at home.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.796) out of 10 for The Shrubbery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.921 for The Shrubbery is calculated as follows: ( (164 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 178 Ratings = 4.921
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Shrubbery is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
