Mum moved into the Firs when she was very unwell, and they did an excellent job of nursing her back to recovery. Initially, once she had recuperated, she seemed to be settling in well and dialogue with senior management seemed to confirm this to be the case. Unfortunately, this didn't last for very
long. Mum enjoys walking and struggled in this environment as it's a small care home with limited access to the gardens. The Firs is more suited to the less mobile and as we found out doesn't specialise in care for residents with Alzheimer's. One of the most important requirements for us was always a transparent and open line of communication, particularly when dealing with Alzheimer's. The Firs had promised to notify us of any issues relating to mum. However, this did not happen and after an incident, we were asked to move her out of the home almost immediately. To conclude we as a family would not recommend The Firs as there are much better care homes available.

Reply from Emma Green, Service Manager at The Firs Residential Care Home

It was a pleasure and a privilege to look after mum during her stay. The circumstances around her leaving were notified to CQC and safeguarding following a serious complaint from another resident. I was pleased to hear from S B after Mum left and was comforted by the understanding that Mum had settled well and that maybe the timing for the move was good.

If you love your relative, don’t put them in this care home. If you value your relative's welfare and wellbeing, this is not the place for them. If you consider safeguarding a priority, this is not for you.

Reply from Emma Green, Service Manager at The Firs Residential Care Home

It is sad that N F holds these views. Safeguarding concerns were raised by both the company on behalf of the resident and N F on behalf of the resident. The council's independent safeguarding team reported that there was no breach of safety and that we have acted in accordance with all legislation.

Mum has lived at The Firs for 4 years and has always received excellent care. Unfortunately she had an accident in early July and needed to be hospitalised. From the moment she fell(during the night) and throughout her hospital stay, she has continued to receive first class attention from The Firs.
Indeed the manager stayed with my mother in A&E until we arrived some hours later from our home some distance away, only being relieved for a short time by the owner. This, I believe, is indicative of the very high standards that are applied.
Mum's well-being has clearly been of the utmost importance to everyone at The Firs and we have received enormous support during an often difficult few weeks; especially when discharge plans were being drawn up by the hospital. We have every confidence in the quality of care Mum receives and feel extremely fortunate that she is in the hands of people who demonstrate appropriate compassion and respect in all their interactions with my mother.

I have such praise for this caring residential home where my grandmother lived for the last 9 months or so of her life. My grandmother was treated with respect by gentle, caring staff and I feel like she was part of their family. The manager was often on hand to chat to and attended many of my grandmother's
appointments alongside other family members, so that she could be sure of giving the best possible care. The rooms are clean, well decorated and a fresh smell throughout. We often arrived unannounced and found just the same level of attention to detail. My grandmother was happy, well rested and made as comfortable as was possible for such an elderly lady. I especially valued being able to visit with my young daughter and even on occasion my young puppy in tow, we were always made welcome and fussed over - they clearly feel that as it was my grandmother's home, her visitors should feel just as at home there. I wouldn't hesitate to use the home again or to recommend them.
