At Hazelford, care is centred around the individual. The team works closely with residents and their families to ensure person-centred care that supports independence, dignity and wellbeing. I reviewed Hazleford Care Home 2 weeks after M moved in. After being his sole carer for 18 years I was upset at handing him over to the care of others. I had always put him first and now he was one of many living in a strange environment and feeling resentful. I knew straight away Hazleford was good
but now, 2 months later, I wish to upgrade my ratings.
I regularly take M to Daycare, appointments and social activities and the staff get him suitably dressed. He has mobility problems so getting him in or out the car is no easy task. In the terrible weather the staff are always good humoured despite getting very cold and wet.
Whenever M perceives a problem, whether genuine or imagined, Shaun and his team listen to him and resolve the problem or gently soothe him. He misses his 1 : 1 home care but he is well looked after and safe in their care.
Reply from Shaun Rodgers, Manager at The Hazelford Residential HomeThankyou for your lovely words and I appreciate you taking the time out to complete and re-review following MP now being more settled. I look forwards to working with you to ensure that the care of all residents continues to improve.

The manager of The Hazelford is kind and considerate and this is reflected by me seeing his contended and caring self. He gives the job his all, he even saw the New Year in with 4 residents - my husband included. He makes Hazelford a happier place and can be completely trusted. He is sympathetic to
both residents and relatives. he is in complete control and stands for no nonsense. He is aware of all that happens and nothing misses him. He is knowledgeable, down to earth, very approachable and an excellent manager.
Reply from Shaun Rodgers, Manager at The Hazelford Residential HomeThis is wonderful to hear and the team around me deserve the highest credit also as I would be lost without them. We will continue to strive for improvments.

My husband spend sixteen months in Hazelford until his recent passing. As his health began to give cause for concern the compassion and knowledge of end of life care by the manager and all his team was exceptional, as were all aspects of my husband's previous care, it was always above and beyond. Not
only my husband but the whole family were cared for and helped through this very difficult time. We entrusted him to the care of the home and we were never disappointed only reassured and grateful that he was always treated as an individual with his own needs and likes and a person in his own right who happened to have dementia. It gave us such peace of mind to see he was so settled and part of the Hazelford family.
How the manager and his staff achieve what they do we will never know but we will be forever grateful to them and long may they continue in helping not only people at the most vulnerable time of their lives but allaying the fears of anxious relatives and friends looking for genuine help and support for their loved ones.
Reply from Shaun Rodgers, Manager at The Hazelford Residential HomeThankyou for your kind words and your husband is missed. We are happy that we were able to provide you with comfort whilst he was here and we will strive to do this for others.

Throughout my many visits to this home. I have always found the staff to be polite, caring and considerate both to me and to the residents in their care. All rooms both private and communal are kept in excellent condition and cleanliness. All the staff act in a very professional manner they work hard,
but can still have a smile for both residents and visitors.
Reply from Shaun Rodgers, Manager at The Hazelford Residential HomeThankyou for your kind words and I am sure that the the staff will be appreciative that their hard work is being recognised. We are continuing to work on ensuring that all areas are person centred and that residents wellbeing is at the forefront of everything we do.

My mother has been here for nearly four months. The staff and management are excellent. The food seems to be pretty good, too. I have no worries. I have confidence in the staff. They keep my mother safe at all times. I do wonder if it might be possible to organise more activities or entertainment but
I note in this regard that communal music and singing now take place (once a week, I think)
Reply from Shaun Rodgers, Manager at The Hazelford Residential HomeThankyou for the comments. Activities is something we are aiming to improve and work upon. The singing is taking place at least three times a week but additional activities are being provided.

Manager is understanding and always available for any questions you may have, senior care team members very knowledgeable about loved ones, and the care team there is nothing that is to much, the whole staff go above and beyond to make sure his needs are met, my dad is very happy here, extremely well
cared for
Treated with dignity and respect, Care is very person centred and evident when you see the team with them,
It feels like home from home and an extended family
Home is a happy place full of smiles despite how hard the pressure is at times
Also the staff that never get mentioned such as the admin, chef and maintenance they all get involved if and where needed
Thank you and keep up good work

Under the circumstances that my grandad was placed into the home, the staff and the manager couldn't have been more supportive and helpful. The manager remained in frequent contact throughout the initial process of moving my grandad and advised us as to what he thought was best but ultimately allowed
us to make the decision that was fit for my family and my grandad as an individual. We were shown a variety of different rooms to pick from and allowed to bring some of his personal items from home to make him feel more comfortable. The manager has been very persistent regarding my grandad's medications and the appointments he needs. The staff are always friendly and this home suits my grandad's needs and his personality well.

My father has only recently moved to Hazleford and we have all been blown away by what a positive experience it has been. The staff and manager are simply brilliant, working so hard and showing real genuine kindness - not a skill that can be faked. Even the maintenance man introduced himself to me and
had a chat - I was made to feel so welcome. The fact that family are welcome any time is so reassuring.
The building is old, but lovely and most importantly clean and fresh smelling. His room is great, and he is loving the food - I don't know if all care homes give 2 choices for lunch, but I was quite envious !
Overall, the team at Hazleford have taken what was a difficult stress filled situation for us, and made it positive. Thank you

During the six months that my father has been at Hazelford, I cannot fault the care he is receiving. The entire team make sure that not only he, but that the family, are involved in every aspect of his wellbeing and are supported through changes. As his needs become greater so does his care. The recent
evaluation of the residents due to the risk of flooding must have been very difficult for all concerned and thanks again must go to the staff for minimising the effect on the residents and re-assuring them. We were updated as to not only where my father was being transferred, but very regularly given news on how he was settling.
As a family we could not ask for more. Thank you to the entire Hazelford staff for your compassion and devotion and helping not only my father but the whole family through this time.

My Mum has only been at Hazelford since late December, but the manager and carers know her so well and show her so much care and attention. I'm amazed at how much effort the team put in to really get to know Mum and make sure they meet her needs.
Yes, the building could do with the attention, although
clear but it's the care that makes this place special.
If it was a hotel and judged on this alone it would be a 5-star! Thank you so much.

Everyone seems pleasant and happy and helpful. One of the residents was asking for her glasses, they got broken and she wanted them to be able to see properly and have a go at writing. I hope this is followed up as she did tell someone so when I next visit she has them as she couldn't see me well enough.
Everything great here.

My mother-in-law has been resident at The Hazelford for several years and we have always felt that the home has provided a safe and caring environment for her. The staff I have seen with her are caring and respectful towards her whilst retaining a sense of humour. The home and its staff have been particularly
good at encouraging and developing her mobility which was very poor when she first became resident. The Hazelford is an old repurposed building - not always easy to maintain but it is good to see continuing investment.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.525)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.525) out of 10 for The Hazelford Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.550 for The Hazelford Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (144 Excellents x 5) + (57 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 220 Ratings = 4.55
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hazelford Residential Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
