If someone is in reasonable health and a resident on the ground floor Southwell Court is a pleasant care home, with some kind and welcoming carers though problems stem from staff shortages, not recognised/acknowledged by management though recognised as a problem by others. The staff often rushed and
stretched with little time to interact with residents. Social activity staff do a great job but have to cover three floors. It has been noted there is inconsistency in the level of basic personal care (nails, hair, shaving). When concerns are raised they are dealt with quickly but often reoccur. The lounge on the first floor is like a waiting room, often with people shouting for help. Described by my husband as a 'dumping ground'. The building is light and airy and the well kept garden is a lovely place to sit.

Although there are some caring members of staff, there are sadly not enough dedicated carers to provide a consistent level of care. The garden at the rear is pleasant for the residents to enjoy in the winter months.

The service user has been a resident at Southwell Court since April 2021. A survivor of Covid, she was still very ill and frail on admission. The excellent nursing care, good food and attention to her specific needs all helped to restore her to much better health.
More recently, during an episode
of ill health, the management respected her wishes not to go into the hospital. This entailed the manager having to arrive over 20 miles to obtain the reassuring medication - "literally going the extra mile". Total dedication, care and compassion.

It was the hardest decision. Which care home do we "put" our close friend in. Even the language was harsh. A nurse I met spoke very highly of Southwell Court, and so in May 2019, I visited them (the 3rd such visit? to see how they measured up to my expectations. I was very impressed with what I saw,
what I heard and how I felt after the initial visit. My gut instincts told me this was the right place - and four years on, I'm so pleased I followed my instincts. The staff showed genuine care and concern for my friend. They kept me frequently informed of her condition. Even during the peak of Covid, I felt that the management team were across every aspect of bio-safety and security. Every time I called to ask about my friend and her welfare, I was given an informed, sensitive and knowledgeable update. All in all, Southwell Court Care home was a godsend - and I can't speak highly enough of the care home manager, her team and their supporters. Thank you, team Southwell Court (Care Home)!
Reply from Margaret Hemstock, Home Manager at Southwell CourtDear Ross, thank you for your kind review. It was a great privilege to look after your friend during her stay in Southwell Court. We will never forget her lovely singing and how happy this made her.

My mum was sent to Southwell care home one week before Christmas 2022 for emergency care. All the staff are amazing; they all looked after my mum with 100% care and respect. The rooms are always clean and tidy, and Mum enjoyed the food provided.

My dad passed away in December 21, and after 69 years of marriage, Mum, at 89, had to learn to live on her own. As much as we tried to keep Mum in her own home, by October 22, Mum needed everyday support as her dementia was quickly taking hold, as well as being so very lonely. From the moment I spoke
to the general manager at Southwell (I have no words to say what an amazing, totally committed lady she is), but also that every member of staff at the home, whatever their position, has been empathetic, thoughtful and considerate not only to Mum but to us her children. It was a very tough and upsetting decision to take Mum away from her home, but every single member of the Southwell team has helped us through this difficult journey. Now, in January 2023, I do believe if Mum wasn't at Southwell, she wouldn't be with us today. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and Mum is treated with respect and as an individual. I absolutely recommend this home. What amazing people they all are!

It is fine in here if you are fit and well, if not you are moved upstairs where things are quite different. No photographs up here and certainly not a lot to get excited about. I visit my husband who has been moved upstairs following an illness and find it miserable and depressing. I quite enjoyed visiting
when he was downstairs but have to force myself to go now. He is quite with it for 90 years of age but he has been put with poor souls that wander about and can't hold a conversation. Luckily he can tolerate it, I used to enjoy my visits but now we have to sit in his bedroom because of the constant turmoil in the lounge. I used to enjoy my visits but now dread them.

The care is exemplary. The staff are wonderful, warm and caring. The activities are extensive and inclusive. The atmosphere is lively and full of happiness. The food is amazing. My father lived here for five years before he died. My mother would go nowhere else and has now been resident for two years
and is healthier than she was living on her own. She loves being there. Visitors are welcome and encouraged whenever. It is a marvellous home.

Initially, our Dr said if he is happy don't move him. Where he was closed and after trial at home needed more carers. Eating little - came with him. Big worry for me, last couple of weeks he has picked up despite he is very thin. Only with you last 3 months. Any problems with him physically you have
looked into and so far he is responding. Would appreciate him to have more stimulation.

Southwell Court is a friendly upbeat care home where residents are treated as individuals, with respect, warmth and friendliness.
Visitors too are welcomed in any area of the home.
Residents are looked after well and staff liaise very well with relatives.
There is a varied programme of entertainers
who visit the home.
A lot of thought, imagination and hard work is put into planning different activities and events.
The building itself is pleasant, open and very clean.
A super, well-tended garden is at the back and is a safe, secure place where any resident could choose to walk, sit and enjoy the surroundings.

During my Nana's time at the care home, she was very well looked after and care for. The food was lovely and the staff were excellent.
During her end of life care, the staff went about and beyond and kept us up to date with every change in health as it happened.
The care was simply outstanding and
we will be forever grateful to those who cared for her.

Mum has been with you since March 2015 and after visiting today, I felt I had to finally submit a review. Mum now looks better than she has in years, gained weight, lively and most importantly happy. Yes, she has Dementia and often thinks she's at work but is settled, has friends and is safe. I cannot
express our gratitude enough to all the staff for the care they give mum and the fun and laughter they share with her. We would and I have recommended you to anyone who wants the best care available for the most important person in their lives. Thank you for the care, love and support you all give mum every day xxx

My Mother, who had dementia, came to live here in 2009 aged 90 after one night's trial stay (having already rejected two other residential homes after one visit). She settled in quickly and told me she felt safe and had no worries living here (she had previously lived in her own home and become nervous
and isolated). I found the staff to be very good, most of them caring and attentive to her needs , quickly achieving a rapport with her. She died in April 2015 and for the last 6 weeks was bedfast, not eating and barely drinking. We were very impressed with the care she received; although it was impossible for staff to be with her all the time, when they came to wash, change, turn her etc they were always kind, gentle and loving and we felt the care was as good as we could have given. My sister commented that the staff really did give her TLC (tender, loving care). Obviously a residential home has its drawbacks and especially if you are deaf and have dementia so cannot easily interact with other residents but as far as staff were concerned we felt our Mother was cared for very well.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.496)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.496) out of 10 for Southwell Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.706 for Southwell Court is calculated as follows: ( (135 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 180 Ratings = 4.706
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.79 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southwell Court is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4. 15 Positive Reviews ÷ 16.4 = 0.915
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
