My mother was admitted to Autumn Lodge in August 2021. She is 84, and after a fall had lost virtually all her ability to walk. In those circumstances, it was impossible for her to be looked after at home. The admission to Autumn Lodge went well, and for a few days, Mum and her family members were happy
with the placement. Then there appeared to be a bizarre and illogical change of attitude by certain senior staff members. They seemed to decide that Mum could actually walk after all, if she would just try harder. These staff told me they were 'encouraging' Mum, but this encouragement included comments like 'You're not helping yourself', 'You're not trying hard enough' and 'You did it this morning, so you can do it again now.' This left Mum extremely distressed. Other staff would treat her with far more compassion, and give her the help she needed. This whole experience negated the otherwise good aspects of the care provided by Autumn Lodge, and the family moved her to another care home.

This home is family run and you can tell. The family/management are always on hand to assist, especially the manager and care manager. Staff are warm, friendly and always reassuring. My aunt was always happy and always felt safe. As a family, this was most reassuring.

My Father spent two years at Autumn Lodge residential care home. It soon became his home and the staff his friends. It was a comfort to know he was so well looked after and happy there. It is family run and they together with their dogs provide a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere where there is always
a respect for people's dignity. The staff are the greatest asset, at all times they are friendly and warm. I would like to convey my greatest thanks to them and would highly recommend this care home.

Inspection ratings
We rate most services according to how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led they are, using four levels:
Outstanding - the service is performing exceptionally well.
Good - the service is performing well and meeting our expectations.
Requires improvement - the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve.
Inadequate - the service is performing badly and we've taken enforcement action against the provider of the service.
No rating/under appeal/rating suspended - there are some services which we can't rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider. Suspended ratings are being reviewed by us and will be published soon.
Ticks and crosses
We don't rate every type of service. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them.
There's no need for the service to take further action. If this service has not had a CQC inspection since it registered with us, our judgement may be based on our assessment of declarations and evidence supplied by the service.
The service must make improvements.
At least one standard in this area was not being met when we inspected the service and we have taken enforcement action.
