MHA Mayfields care home offers residential dementia care services for 46 residents with short stays available throughout the year. The thoughtful and compassionate vision of Professor Tom Kitwood, an internationally renowned pioneer in dementia care, lives in every detail of the home. Guided by his philosophy of person-centred care, the home is both functional and profoundly humane, with no stairs or lifts, the open-plan design flows freely to foster ease, independence, and a deep sense of community, while still ensuring each resident’s privacy and safety.

The three households are seamlessly connected to a vibrant central hub, a heart of laughter, music, worship, and connection. Whether it's sharing stories over tea or dancing to familiar tunes, Mayfields is more than just a care home; it’s a genuine home filled with warmth, dignity, and purpose.

The gardens at Mayfields are a vibrant extension of home life, beautifully designed to be accessible, sociable, and enriching. From tranquil seating areas and raised flower beds to lively gardening sessions and seaside-themed summer BBQs, every corner invites connection, reflection, and joy.

It's easy to understand why mealtimes are so important at Mayfields. Like everything here the residents are at the heart of everything, and they play an active role in shaping the menus, ensuring meals reflect their tastes, preferences, and traditions.

Life at the home is as vibrant as its residents. The activities calendar is packed with opportunities to connect, create, and celebrate. Residents enjoy pottery sessions, chair fitness classes, and live music performances, all designed to inspire joy and keep minds and bodies active. Whether you’re searching for yourself or a loved one, for short stays or residential dementia care, the team at Mayfields are here to help.

My mother is being looked after very well in Mayfields. She is treated with dignity and with understanding. The staff team are kind and supportive. I receive phone calls informing me about Mum's care needs. If Mum has had a fall we are informed immediately. Mum's clothes are clean. Her hair is washed
and cut regularly and, importantly, her nails are out and often varnished. Food is excellent. One or two more activities each week would be good.
Reply from Su Neill, Home Manager at MayfieldsThank you for your feedback. We aim to offer a full range of activities each day with our activity coordinator working Monday to Friday. He has a file evidencing all activities offered and participation levels. Please feel free to have a chat with him when you next visit to discuss the activities and see if we can offer a wider choice for your mother to join in with.

Lovely comfortable and homely residence.
Staff are very helpful and friendly to ensure Mum's stay is an enjoyable experience. Lots of activities take place on a daily basis and staff encourage the residents to join in. Overall, a safe and well-organised care home.

Mum is currently a resident here. I have to commend the staff for their level of care and due diligence. They are truly lovely in their dealings with Mum and speak with genuine fondness and compassion. It’s been difficult given Covid but staff are well trained and do their utmost to keep residents safe.
I have been impressed with the range of activities available to the residents and management are always accessible and available.

My mother has been a resident of Mayfields for several years now and I have nothing but praise for their care and professionalism. Since before the complexities of COVID, the staff of the home have been consistently caring and supportive of my mother. The staff handled the COVID difficulties really
well and gave me confidence and reassurance that she would receive the best of care. The meals provided are of a very high standard. I live in Florida, USA so being far away, it is important to know that my mother is so well cared for.

I have no hesitation in recommending Mayfields to anyone considering making it a home for themselves or their loved one.

Although the review date is December 2021, my comments apply to the more extended period that my mother has been resident at Mayfields.

My Aunt has settled really well into the care home especially given the COVID situation. The staff have been brilliant and very supportive. I've seen my Aunt on numerous occasions and she always comments on how lovely the staff are and how good the food is! She tells me that I have made a good choice.

Without reservation, I believe Mayfields is a truly exceptional facility for the care and security of my mother and all the residents here. The carers have unbelievable patience and a caring threshold that is unquestionable. The food and entertainment are first class and keep the residents energised.
I cannot pay Mayfields' staff a higher compliment. Thank you for all you do for Mother and all the other residents.

During the COVID-19 lockdown I feel that my mother has received excellent care from all the staff and they have been safely reintroducing visits over the past few weeks. Overall my mother seems to be very happy and healthy.

My dad moved into Mayfields 6 months ago and has settled in very well. The home is all on one level, light and airy and very spacious which is great for dad as he regularly likes to wander around the different wings. It was dad's 90th birthday recently and it was a lovely day with residents, staff and
family members celebrating in the central lounge with the music therapist, playing and singing some of dad's favourite songs. The home also has 3 large garden areas to sit in or wander around in the summer months. The staff and management are very kind and caring and I would have no hesitation in recommending Mayfields.

I am so pleased I was able to secure a place for my husband in this home, after being in another care home where he certainly was not treated properly or with dignity. I cannot praise this home enough. So much so, I can now visit my daughter in Australia knowing my husband will be safe and well cared
for. Previously I could not go!!

My mum arrived here in June and has been well cared for. It has taken time for the staff to get to know her but they have all worked hard to do that. I have found all staff to be excellent, very kind and in easy reach of residents and their family. They are keen to preserve independence which means
allowing mum to do as much as she can. What I like about this as she can walk into any of the wings and into the big garden as she chooses. There are always staff about. They are keen to support families as well as residents. Food is plentiful but monitored. The quality of the main courses vary a bit but never bad. There are choices. The decor is modern, well maintained and cleanly kept. We have had a few issues (I would expect that) but each time the staff have listened and responded immediately and helpfully. The ethos of this home is what I like. The family are welcomed and become part of the wing groups if they wish. This home is striving to be the best and I am pleased mum is here.
Reply from Susan Neill, Home Manager at MayfieldsThank you for your feedback which will be shared with the team a Mayfields to ensure we are continually reviewing the standard of care we deliver to ensure it is of a high standard. The menu is under review at present to introduce the Winter type foods. The food is not monitored and staff should be asking residents if they would like seconds at meal times. I will address this at our next staff meeting and monitor on my daily observation checks. Please continue to give us your feedback as we really do value it.

Home is too expensive and there is good and not so good staff providing the care. Staff have not become accustomed to my mother's likes/dislikes regarding food which is important. My mother's clothing is disapearing.

My sister has been a resident of Mayfields since 15th October 2014. At that time the layout of the buildings and gardens enabled her to move around with relative ease. As her condition has deteriorated the staff have coped well with her changing abilities, and have always treated her with kindness and
respect. Furthermore, the management has always kept me informed of all aspects of her care plan and condition. I have appreciated this as I live too far away to visit her as frequently as I would like. Her friends and other relatives visit more frequently.

My wife of over 40 years, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. After over 4 years of looking after her, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and place my wife's care in the hands of others. The professionalism and understanding of Mayfields management and staff made this transition bearable.

All

Residents are respected as individuals and are actively encouraged to treat Mayfields as if it were their own home, within the obvious health and safety boundaries. My wife has been a Resident for over 2 years, during which time, inevitably, her condition has deteriorated, placing a bigger demand on staff time. The very high standard of both physical and mental welfare provided has NOT diminished.

Mayfields was designed and built as a standalone dementia unit. The building is well maintained and where practicable is developed to keep pace with current thinking on building design for dementia. A current thinking approach is taken to the care and mental wellbeing of the Residents.

The staff are always cheerful and this helps to promote a similar demeanour in the Residents. I have only praise and admiration for the care, patience and dedication of the management, staff and volunteers.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.576)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.576) out of 10 for Mayfields is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.766 for Mayfields is calculated as follows: ( (37 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 47 Ratings = 4.766
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.81 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mayfields is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0.435
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
