The Grove Care Centre is a 28-bedded home offering a combination of single rooms and double rooms, 26 of which have en-suite facilities.

Originally built in 1924, The Grove is surrounded by an acre of beautiful, mature gardens at the heart of the village of Thurnscoe near Barnsley.

The Grove has been extensively upgraded and refurbished to modernise the facilities and to provide specific specialist care for residents with dementia. The re-decoration and new furniture provide cosy and comfortable surroundings and new, state-of-the-art equipment assures the health and safety of residents with limited mobility.

Residents enjoy a range of social activities, and The Grove regularly welcome singers, musicians and other entertainers to the home. For those who prefer peace and quiet, and for residents to pursue their own hobbies, there are dedicated areas for relaxation.

The home has a dedicated team of staff with a wealth of experience within this sector. Some staff at the Grove Care Home have over 20 years of service and the staff are passionate about respect and dignity for each resident in the home.

The Grove has been highlighted in the Barnsley Employers forum for the way End of Life Care is delivered, and although the home does not have a designated End of Life Champion, every staff member in the home is an End of Life Champion and all residents will feel the love and respect.

The Grove Care Home has a new computerised care plan system called Person Centred Software where staff evidence care interactions and care planning as it happens.

All catering is locally sourced and freshly home cooked, with a varied menu catering for all dietary requirements. These menus/meals are discussed with the residents of The Grove and they are healthy and well balanced.

Mom has been at The Grove Care Home for five months. She is very happy and settled there as she suffers from Alzheimer's/dementia and can get very confused but all staff are very friendly/understanding and help to reassure her. She loves the staff and feels safe at The Grove, she keeps telling me how
she enjoys the meals. Nothing is too much trouble when she asks for anything. Can't thank the staff enough.

Beautiful home, extremely warm and welcoming. Very attentive and friendly staff. Everyone (from cooks, handyperson to person in charge) goes out of their way to welcome visitors and it is obvious the residents are very well cared for. I am so happy to have found somewhere so safe and perfect for my
mum.

My nan moved into the home last year after living independently with dementia for a few years. She finally became too frail and confused to live alone. The staff work hard to provide her with everything she needs, talk to her with respect and understanding. It's such a huge relief that Nans is now settled
in The Grove Care Home.

I can’t compliment the staff at The Grove Care Home enough in the way they look after my dad. He’s been there nearly two years now and it’s now his new home. When he first was admitted his health was deteriorating and we had grave concerns for his well-being. Thanks to the support and care he received
he is now better than we ever thought he would be. The staff treat him with respect and dignity and really do go the extra mile to make sure he feels at home. Thank you to all the staff for looking after him.

Thank you to all the staff for the care given to our late father, although he had only been a resident there for a short while, he settled in well, and truly enjoyed the company of the other residents and the staff. The staff were always on hand to help him in any way, The Grove Care Home made our father's
last few weeks of his life happy, many thanks to you all.

My mum has lived at the grove care home for four years. Nothing is too much for the staff, always on hand to answer any questions - warm and friendly, absolutely fantastic care. My mum would not be here today if it wasn't for the wonderful staff who care for her on a daily basis. I would recommend The
Grove Care Home to anyone.

The Grove Care Home was brilliant. The staff are friendly and very helpful. They helped my nanna get back on her feet. Cannot honestly thank them enough.
It's lovely and clean, with nice views.
The activities are also great. My nannan isn't a people person and doesn't like to join in activities.
But surprisingly, she did.

One member of staff really needs to learn how to speak to family members of patients in her care. We made her aware of Mum's PICC line not being changed and was three days overdue to be told it got changed and to stop moaning without her checking first. Then we asked for the district nurse's details
to be spoken to like dirt! Very lucky our mum is end-of-life otherwise I wouldn't have been so nice!

Thank you all very much for looking after our mum. We really appreciate everything you have done for her. Although she was reluctant to go into a care home, she was actually very happy once she got there and we were very happy for Mum to be living at The Grove as they were all very helpful, caring and
kind to Mum and to us.

My dad was a resident in The Grove from March 2019 until he passed away there in July 2020. Throughout his stay, we were never less than completely impressed with the care he received. All the staff were totally professional and committed to the cause. They also lifted spirits with their humour and
kindness. At the end, we were able to spend time with my dad, which meant a lot to us. He was able to die peacefully and with dignity. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Grove.

My aunt was admitted to The Grove as she needed end of life care. She was only there three days when she died. She and my family were treated with the utmost respect, nothing was too much trouble to the staff. The home was immaculately clean, as were the residents and even though she wasn't in your
care for very long, my aunt was over the moon with the home and the love and devotion given to her and us was evident for all to see. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Since my mother entered the care home in November 2019 we have found the staff to be very caring and understanding of the needs of my mother. The staff work extremely hard and deserve a big thank you.
My mother being in such a caring environment is a big weight off my mind knowing that she is safe,
secure and eating on a regular basis.
I would definitely recommend The Grove and once again a big thank you to all the staff.

A million thank yous are not enough for the care you have given my dad over the last 3 years. From the first first day, when it started with a milkshake to Dad leaving The Grove for the last time looking immaculate, not forgetting the care dad was given in between. Dad was always clean and tidy, well-fed
and happy. Dad loved and trusted each and every one of you, in return dad got respect, care and dignity. Heaven must be missing lots of angels because they all work here at The Grove.
So from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all.
Love and very best wishes to you all at The Grove.

My mum has been a resident at The Grove for 18 months. Although she has very complex needs she is cared for in a professional and caring manner. Both the manager and staff are always easily accessible to talk over any problems that may occur. The staff do try to include mum with activities but I understand
that this is difficult.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.665)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.665) out of 10 for The Grove Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.815 for The Grove Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (139 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 168 Ratings = 4.815
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.85 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Grove Care Home is based on 14 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.85
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 14 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
