My mum is a resident at Priestley Care Home in Birstall, West Yorkshire. The staff are excellent and go over and above to show care and kindness to the residents. The management responds quickly to any questions about our mother's care.

My mum has been in Priestley Care Home for a year now. She has settled well and has been looked after really well. All staff are excellent, they are very friendly, caring and really helpful. When Mum is unwell, they call doctors and always inform me. They have lovely events to keep them entertained.

Reply from Michael Wood, Content Marketing Manager at Priestley Care Home

Deputy manager and all team members I have found them to understand all residents' needs and show compassion and are treated with respect and dignity. Nothing is too much trouble and are kept well informed. The home is clean and welcoming, safe, secure environment. Various activities for residents to participate in to keep them occupied and brain active daily. Entertainment at various times. All staff know residents' names and if they need help will get relevant team members. Food if they don't like what is on menu for the day they provide alternatives. All staff are always smiling and are good at making myself feel that my relative is well cared for. Well done Priestley management should be proud of staff.

Kitchen: they alway go that extra mile.
Care/support: very caring with mum and give excellent support to the rest of the family.
Staff: there is a fantastic team at Priestley nothing is too much trouble. When mum as a bad day. They can handle her so well. But there is 5% of the staff. Where the care is not at the same standard.

Management: I have hot met the ladie incharge due to illness (I wish her all the best) but Josh as really step up. He is so passionate about the home. (You need to look after him, we don't want him headhunted)

Review from Janet S (Sister of Resident) published on 30 January 2026 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My sister's room and bedding is always lovely and clean, the food is really good, all the staff are great, she is always nice and clean. They need more staff on shift, 4 would be better on each floor, as staff have to feed people as the dementia gets worse. I go and feed my sister at tea time. If someone is poorly, it takes away one staff if an ambulance has to come.

I would like to thank all staff in this wonderful care home for treating my mum as though she is a family member. My mum had been quite poorly and everyone was so attentive to her needs. No matter what time of day I visit, there is always someone that can say how mum has been. Nothing is too much for them. I highly recommend this care home to anyone that is thinking of finding a suitable home for their loved one. Totally feels like home from home. Well done everyone!

I have been to quite a few homes recently and this one is the best by far. The home is spotless the staff are brilliant. I went with a friend as her sister had gone in there she was very reluctant to go in to a home but she has settled amazingly. She said the staff are great and the food is good and she is looked after brilliantly.

I have lived here for 2 years and I'm very happy. The day&night staff look after me really well.
Both deputy managers look after me, I really like them they are very caring and they always let my gp know if I'm unwell.
If there is something on the menu that I do not like then I am offered other options by the cooks.

We had a singer on Wednesday and he was very good, I really enjoyed myself.

The Priestley Care Home is very welcoming. The deputy managers make sure that the place is extremely well run, this is reflected in the quality of their staff, care and food. The home runs various activities to keep all the residents occupied and to keep their brains active. I know that my mother is in the best place for her stage of life.

My son 2 years ago, knocked on Priestley Care Home's door, for that is what it is to me, a home, ever since. I am cared for, warm and happy. The cooks are excellent, I have to have my food pureed to be able to swallow. The doctors are excellent, the senior staff are extremely caring, always at their best for everybody in our home. My nose is always running, I have Huntington's disease, I use a lot of boxes of tissues.

My mum moved into Priestley Care Home in November 2024 after being in another home that wasn't meeting her needs. Since being in Priestley Care Home my mum has actually started to smile again and has found some vocabulary again which she had lost. All staff at Priestley Care Home show care, compassion and consideration to all residents and family members alike. It's just like a home from home.

During an episode of my Mum presenting with medical issues all the staff who were on that day dealt with everything in the most efficient and caring way ensuring my Mum had an understanding of everything by explaining everything. She went on to suffer a stroke unfortunately but is now back at the home thankfully.

Shelley Ellam
Shelley EllamJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2007

Hi, My name is Shelley and I am the registered manager of Priestley Care Home and have worked in care for over 30 years. I originally started out working in the community environment for Age Concern, a job that gave me the direction to follow a career in care homes. I started working at Priestley Care Home in 2007, employed initially as a senior carer. I enjoyed working with the residents and would often give up my free time to join in and organise activities and events that the residents would enjoy. I was promoted to Deputy Manager of the home in 2011 at which time I learned more about the running of the home allowing me to continue working on my NVQs, I’m now qualified for NVQ Level 5. When the opportunity arose I progressed to home manager in 2014.

I maintain the ethos that the residents are at the very centre of life at Priestley Care Home and I ensure that their home and environment are welcoming and comforting. One of my proudest achievements as a manager is our current Good rating from CQC.

I have lived in the Birstall area for the last thirty-six years and was raised in Batley Carr. I have 5 grown-up children and many grandchildren. I know the local area very well and I have spent my entire career at Priestley promoting and maintaining strong relationships with the homes community. I enjoy holidays, walking, crafting spending time with my family. My hobbies are often transferred into Priestley I will often make things for the residents to enjoy and I also donate these items to help raise money for the home's residents' fund.
