All staff very approachable and happy to help both the residents and visitors. Auntie is kept busy with activities - encouraged to join in rather than sat in her room. The food is great and offers plenty of choices. Rooms kept clean and tidy as are her clothes. Staff go above and beyond e.g. getting shopping etc. for residents. Keep up the good work! xxx

The staff are lovely, apart from one person I have complained to the Area Manager and she was dealt with. Her attitude was abusive and rude. I am 85 years old myself and was upset. Thank you.

This is a small home (approx 40 beds). The atmosphere is homely, relaxed, friendly, and cheerful. As my relative was admitted during lockdown I have not had the freedom to visit the home unrestricted, but the staff are all helpful and friendly and my relative is happy there, considering himself to be with friends.

The staff have been very helpful in the past few weeks in explaining restrictions. It has been a very difficult year for everyone and very upsetting for us as relatives. As the restrictions lift, the staff at the home are working hard to ensure they can begin visiting access again. I know this must be very difficult for them as the guidelines keep changing daily. They have dealt with the challenges in a very professional manner.

Mum was a resident at the home for four years. I picked the Priestly Care Home because as a retired GP, I considered it to be the best in the area. This has been borne out by our experience of the exemplary care Mum received whilst a resident. Nothing was too much for the staff, who are all kind, considerate and very competent in their respective roles. They are also very kind and thoughtful when caring for Mum's family. Thank you for all your care and love.

After being in this care home for over 5 years, I have nothing but praise for the carers and all the staff who work there. During this last pandemic they have worked tirelessly and cheerfully under difficult circumstances, with under-staffing and long hours, always with a cheerful smile and a helping hand. May god bless them all.

On visiting Priestley Care Home I have always been met by friendly staff. I live and work locally and see staff out and about with service users visiting local shops and attractions. Staff have a good knowledge of local services, which will benefit families and service users. I have seen first hand how clean, warm and welcoming the home is and a home from home feeling is what I experience. On visiting a friend who was there for a short stay the level of care was outstanding. She was encouraged to interact with other service users and she was delighted with the varied menu and standard of food. Overall I would recommend Priestley Care Home as an excellent care facility 100%.

This care home welcomed my mum with open arms for a respite stay of 2 weeks. She was treated with friendliness and respect from all the staff and enjoyed her stay, particularly the shower facility which she used twice. The home was accommodating of her desire to bring in her own chair and mattress and her need for daily bananas and particular bread. My big regret is that this home will possibly not be offering respite beds in the future, a necessary lifeline for us family coping with elderly parents in their own home.

Improvements would be - more reclining chairs in the public lounges as my mum wasn't comfortable sitting on the chairs that were provided and more stimulating activities for residents who still have mental capacity.

I got a wonderful welcome. I felt cold, afraid and alone. They gave me a cup of tea, some dinner and put a jumper on me. I'll never forget that welcome. I had a lovely room. It was like a hotel. I could keep myself to myself or join if I wanted. I got on with all the patients and the staff. Staff were helpful, good-natured and created a happy atmosphere. The food was good. It tasted homemade. There was a good choice and the portion size suited me.

The hairdressing was top class. They knew what they were doing and I was pleased with the result. Problems were that my TV didn't work properly, it took four days to get cream for my sore skin. My emergency card broke and wasn't put back. Bells kept me awake at night and light flooding into my room when staff opened the door.

My mother has been at the home for several months now and has received great care and kindness from all of the staff. They are all prepared to go the extra mile to make sure that my mum is happy and settled. Everyone is always bright and cheerful and nothing is too much trouble. It is reassuring to know that she is in such good and caring hands.

My aunt came to Priestley in November 2015. I visited other homes and decided on Priestley after my first visit where I got a good feeling about the care. The staff are a good working team and gel well together. The manager and two deputies are very hands on and are always well informed. They are always willing to answer any questions/concerns. My aunt settled quickly and has a much better quality of life under their care. Well done to everyone at Priestley.

Overall Experience

My mum went to Priestley Care Home in January 2015 after a time spent in hospital. She had previously been very healthy and living independently. This sudden decline necessitated the need to have 24 hour care.

Despite illness, and challenging behaviour on occasion, the staff were kind, caring and went over and above what they needed to do. They really cared about her as well as caring for her.

This was particularly evident when, after a serious accident and hospital stay, her needs increased. The compassion she was shown by the staff during this time was immense. I won't name any particular member of staff, they were all brilliant, even throughout the night.

I was apprehensive when she was first admitted. I had no need to be. One of the things they said, on many occasions, was "we're not here JUST for your mum, we're here for you as well". Sadly my mum died just before her 91st birthday in June 2016.

Excellent staff, very good care, as good as it can be.

Shelley EllamJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2007

Hi, My name is Shelley and I am the registered manager of Priestley Care Home and have worked in care for over 30 years. I originally started out working in the community environment for Age Concern, a job that gave me the direction to follow a career in care homes. I started working at Priestley Care Home in 2007, employed initially as a senior carer. I enjoyed working with the residents and would often give up my free time to join in and organise activities and events that the residents would enjoy. I was promoted to Deputy Manager of the home in 2011 at which time I learned more about the running of the home allowing me to continue working on my NVQs, I’m now qualified for NVQ Level 5. When the opportunity arose I progressed to home manager in 2014.

I maintain the ethos that the residents are at the very centre of life at Priestley Care Home and I ensure that their home and environment are welcoming and comforting. One of my proudest achievements as a manager is our current Good rating from CQC.

I have lived in the Birstall area for the last thirty-six years and was raised in Batley Carr. I have 5 grown-up children and many grandchildren. I know the local area very well and I have spent my entire career at Priestley promoting and maintaining strong relationships with the homes community. I enjoy holidays, walking, crafting spending time with my family. My hobbies are often transferred into Priestley I will often make things for the residents to enjoy and I also donate these items to help raise money for the home's residents' fund.
