My mother has recently been for respite care at Priestley Care Home after a recent hospital stay. The care home treated my mother with respect and dignity. The care was excellent and she loved her baths. My mum's room was lovely, with a television. The staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble at all. The laundry lady was great and made sure my mum's clothes were washed and sided in her room.

My mother lived happily in this care home until on 28.3.2024 she received a letter from the care home manager giving her 28 days' notice to leave. She has run out of money to pay for care fees and although I applied to the local council for funding in November 2023 they did not make any payment to this care home until late April 2024. The care manager would not listen to reason from me and told me in no uncertain terms that 'this was a business'. I found my mother another care home but whilst staying there she caught covid and was dead within a week. All in all a truly dreadful experience.

Ever since a good friend of mine was moved to the Priestley Care Home in September 2022, I have visited every week on a regular basis. During my visits, I am always impressed by the high level of support, along with the high standard of good, positive care. My own previous experience was in Social Work and Residential work, so I am aware of the pressure of care staff, but dovish to say, the staff team are not only brilliant in the care they provide, but an asset to the organisation to be proud of. Thank you for my friend's quality of life.

Mine and my mum's experience, more importantly, have been very good.
Can't fault the staff under sometimes very difficult circumstances.

Overall, very pleased with the care home.

I feel that Mum is safe and protected by the staff team. The home is spotlessly clean and safe. Staff are well trained. The staff team have become part of Mum's family and have made an effort to get to know her. We are listened to and any concerns we have are discussed in a very professional manner. The manager of the home is always available and approachable, this reflects the relationship with staff, relatives and residents. Has provided so much support to me. The whole staff team are fantastic.

The team here continue to do everything they can to make Mum comfortable. They recognise that she struggles to communicate but they still talk to her.

Events around Christmas time brought smiles to people's faces - even Mum and I, hope there will be more throughout the year.

My cousin was in the home for ten years. My cousin was looked after well by some cheerful and sensitive staff. Occasionally, a staff member would be less than patient and could be unthinking but the majority were caring. I would like to see more imagination applied to activities and more engagement for residents. Management was firm and efficient. The room was clean. The cost was very high. Hope the staff see the money.

The quality of care is generally good and the staff are cheerful, friendly and supportive. My relative has physical and mental difficulties, his short-term memory is almost non-existent. At one time we were emailed monthly with a programme of activities and some photos, this has not happened for several months - I don't know why, are there still activities?

Reply from Paul Millar, Marketing Manager at Priestley Care Home

The management team are very caring and supportive. They have gone above and beyond to support my grandma coming to Priestley. They have also helped me with a difficult situation. I really can not thank them enough for all of their help after a stressful two months - they quickly stepped in and resolved for me. My grandma has been in the hospital a long time and has been anxious to go into respite care. As soon as she got through the doors of Priestley she had a big beaming smile. She has told me that she would like to live here permanently. Management and care staff were there to greet her arrival. All the staff on days and nights are very attentive and caring. Nothing is too much trouble. The home is clean - her room is lovely and warm. The food looks good and the portions are plenty. My grandma is very happy here. All of the staff that work here are a credit to Burlington Care.

I cannot express enough my gratitude to all the staff, they are all truly amazing! My mum was very upset and anxious when she had to go into a care home, those feelings didn't last very long as the staff were brilliant with her. She soon felt secure and this made her smile every single day. They are one big happy family and they treated my mum with dignity, respect and love. The staff excelled with the palliative care, every one of them was supportive and compassionate - highly recommend.

I live in Australia and Priestley Care Home have cared for my father for the last two years. Due to Covid, I have not been able to travel to the UK to see him. However, the staff have been absolutely brilliant with their communication to me and reassurance during their time. When I finally got to visit my dad in March, I found the home very warm and welcoming and the staff professional. My dad is happy and not just a number.

My Mum was a resident within the home for just short of a year. During this time as a family, we were very happy and satisfied with the care and support given to not only my Mum but as a whole family. All staff members that we saw or spoke to were very kind and caring, even in the most difficult of situations and this is something that we will always be grateful for. The home was very accommodating and we are so grateful that we could be with Mum during her final days and moments.

The care shown towards my Mum was always to a high standard and very professional but it was also clear that staff members genuinely cared. Mum was very settled here and was happy to call it home. As a family we cannot thank all staff members enough, they are exceptional people.

Mum passed away on the 7th of September after being in Priestley for one year, from September 2020 to March 2021. We could not see Mum due to lockdowns, but spoke to her daily; she always said how good her care was. After being allowed visits from March 2021, we could see this for ourselves. After a fall and hospital stay, Mum was returned to Priestly, and in her final days, the care and love shown to Mum were exceptional. I cannot praise the staff enough for their dedication to Mum.

We have been associated with Priestly Care Home 5 years ago with my father. When it came Mum needed care for a broken hip and bed rest and care Priestly was the only home my Mum and family wanted. The staff are so very kind, helpful, respectful and always wanting to make sure all parties involved are happy and cared for to the highest level.

We can't praise them enough and are truly appreciative of all their help and comfort during a difficult time. We were sad when Mum left to go for rehabilitation, we would have preferred she stay there.

Shelley Ellam
Shelley EllamJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2007

Hi, My name is Shelley and I am the registered manager of Priestley Care Home and have worked in care for over 30 years. I originally started out working in the community environment for Age Concern, a job that gave me the direction to follow a career in care homes. I started working at Priestley Care Home in 2007, employed initially as a senior carer. I enjoyed working with the residents and would often give up my free time to join in and organise activities and events that the residents would enjoy. I was promoted to Deputy Manager of the home in 2011 at which time I learned more about the running of the home allowing me to continue working on my NVQs, I’m now qualified for NVQ Level 5. When the opportunity arose I progressed to home manager in 2014.

I maintain the ethos that the residents are at the very centre of life at Priestley Care Home and I ensure that their home and environment are welcoming and comforting. One of my proudest achievements as a manager is our current Good rating from CQC.

I have lived in the Birstall area for the last thirty-six years and was raised in Batley Carr. I have 5 grown-up children and many grandchildren. I know the local area very well and I have spent my entire career at Priestley promoting and maintaining strong relationships with the homes community. I enjoy holidays, walking, crafting spending time with my family. My hobbies are often transferred into Priestley I will often make things for the residents to enjoy and I also donate these items to help raise money for the home's residents' fund.
