Alexandra House care home is situated close to Saltwell Park, a Victorian park in Gateshead.

They have worked very hard to create an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming, and go that extra mile to make sure that it is not just residents who are supported and involved within the care home, but their families as well.

Key workers are assigned to each resident as someone they can go to at any time for support or information.

Alexandra House has a bespoke dementia unit which offers support and care tailored for those at the home who are living with dementia. It is highly valued by residents’ families and Alexandra House is very proud of this facility.

When the weather is nice, residents are encouraged to enjoy the home’s excellent garden facilities.

Happy with the care home, very helpful staff. I've been here for over 2 years and enjoy it. The food and drink is good however the activities/entertainment could be improved. Thank you.

My mam has dementia. The staff at Alexandra House are very kind to her. She is very well cared for, they treat her and all the residents with respect. They have a lot of patience.
All care workers deserve a huge pat on the back and a pay rise.
Thank you very much.

My Aunt was admitted to Alexandra House after being hospitalised due to a fall and increasing dementia symptoms. Since being there, she is a different person, she is happy, healthy and very well cared for. Nothing is too much trouble for the manager and her staff who are all friendly, helpful and caring,
to us as a family as well as to my aunt. The home has a very relaxed, peaceful atmosphere and I would not hesitate to recommend Alexandra House to anyone seeking a place in care. It truly is a 'home from home.'

Mum and dad are social care residents in Alexandra House.
Communication with caring and responsive management and staff has been excellent and of particular value and comfort to the family. Occasional issues and minor difficulties have been addressed and resolved in a positive and overall very satisfactory
manner.
Family input is welcomed and incorporated into my parents' care plan. Visits are encouraged and supported.
Health crises which inevitably arise have been dealt with professionally and efficiently utilising the relevant health professionals.
Given their circumstances, my parents are happy, well cared for and secure and I take comfort in that knowledge.
There are many good care homes but it is the extras, like special occasion activities and celebrations and also the staff's extra effort that makes the difference and enhances their quality of life.
Circumstances can and do change but they are kept under regular review for their benefit in an open and positive manner.

Staff did all they could to keep my husband clean and tidy. Unfortunately, he became very difficult and their task became harder. Consequently, he was often unclean, which was not pleasant. It has now been agreed that he needs to be transferred to a nursing home. I would like to thank the management
and staff for trying very hard in a difficult situation.

On 3/5/16 a celebration was held at the above home for my friends 100th birthday. The day was a great success punctuated by photographers, the Lord Mayor and Consort of Gateshead and a singer. All of the staff worked to provide a beautiful buffet, a decorated room and suitable 100th cake. The staff
are always attentive, friendly and obviously enjoy their work/roles at all times. The home is clean, tidy and the residents rooms are cosy and personal.

My mother-in-law has been in Akari care for nearly four years, I try at least to see her two to three days a week. I work full time so when I'm not there the staff do everything possible to help. I feel sometimes they need more staff to help them. I have no problems leaving her there as I know she
is well looked after.

I have been visiting Alexandra House for almost a year as a volunteer reader, however I have been aware of the quality of care for many years as a number of relatives of friends have been residents in the past.

The quality of care that I have observed is consistently very good and the impression

is very homely and relaxed.

Having visited many care homes in connection with volunteer work it is noticeable that Alexandra House has an excellent standard of cleanliness and care.

The residents that I have met have never once complained about their care or any of the staff. All the members of staff I have met are genuinely friendly, helpful and kind to the residents.

I do not have knowledge of individual rooms, food, facilities or value for money as our activities take place in communal areas however in order to complete the survey I have marked these as good based on comments from residents.

I am overcome with gratitude to the staff of Alexandra House. I never imagined a care home could be this good. My husband and I are over the moon with the level of care provided to my mother-in-law who suffers from dementia and now has mobility issues as well. My mother-in-law is clearly very happy
there, activities e.g. music and dancing is provided, visitors are allowed any time of day 24/7. All the staff, including the cleaning staff, the cooks, etc. make us feel welcome and it's like a big, caring family. We're kept posted on my mother-in-law's status, we're alerted to issues as and when they arrive. All the effort has been removed from our shoulders, which is such a relief after years of providing the care ourselves. The home may not be shiny and new, but it is clean and definitely designed for purpose. Good colours, good differentiation between rooms, etc. There are break rooms where we can take my mother-in-law for a cuppa. Her brother comes in with his dog which she loves. Record keeping of visits and sundry expenses are well maintained. Honestly, I can't fault the place for anything. We were able to provide my mother-in-law with a double bed and decorate the room for her as well, so it feels homey.

My Aunt was a resident in Alexandra house for over a year, she moved in when her Dementia was effecting her safety in her home.

We couldn't have made a better choice. The Manager and all of her staff bent over backwards for my Aunt throughout her whole stay, nothing was ever a problem, she was made

welcome from the very second we arrived. They catered to her diet excellently, providing her with meals "she was used to" the food was excellent! the emotional support she received was outstanding! especially on days when I wasn't available due to family and work commitments, I never had to worry about her when she lived there unlike the constant worry before, I was kept informed about everything.

The staff took her out and about whenever she wanted to leave the home, to go shopping or to the library, there are no complaints I can make and when she passed away they were all so supportive the staff even came to the funeral even those on their day off, they made her final months comfortable and fulfilling which is more than I could have done by myself,

We did check out other homes but I highly recommend that this is the home to select the staff are excellent and actually really care about their residents, I know my Aunt loved it there and we couldn't have hoped for more,

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.207)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.207) out of 10 for Alexandra House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.857 for Alexandra House is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 70 Ratings = 4.857
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.35 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Alexandra House is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.75
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
