  • Alexandra House, Gateshead
Alexandra House care home is situated close to Saltwell Park, a Victorian park in Gateshead.

They have worked very hard to create an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming, and go that extra mile to make sure that it is not just residents who are supported and involved within the care home, but their families as well.

Key workers are assigned to each resident as someone they can go to at any time for support or information.

Alexandra House has a bespoke dementia unit which offers support and care tailored for those at the home who are living with dementia. It is highly valued by residents’ families and Alexandra House is very proud of this facility.

When the weather is nice, residents are encouraged to enjoy the home’s excellent garden facilities.

My mother has been a resident for nearly four years. She has been very well looked after all this time. Never had any complaints even now when she no longer knows me. But still happy to greet me and staff.

My 95-year-old mother was initially allocated a place at the care home following several admissions to hospital where it became clear she could no longer look after herself at home even with the assistance of carers calling 4 times a day. On the day of her admission, I was immediately impressed by their
caring attitude as it was her 95th birthday and the home had arranged a cake and balloons for her as we were unable to visit due to covid restrictions - this happened with only a few hours notice! I have been extremely impressed (as has my mother) with the helpfulness, positive attitude, thoughtfulness, caring approach, and friendliness of all the staff we have come into contact with - from the manager and deputy manager to the nurses, care staff, cleaners, and other ancillary staff. My mum has been made to feel very welcome and, after an initial reluctance to the idea of living in a care home, she has settled in very well and is very pleased with the level of care she is receiving.

I am happy here, but I would prefer to be at home. However, if that can't happen I am happy with my care here, the staff are always nice to me.

My mother received the best care possible whilst in Alexandra House, she was there for a year just after my dad passed away. She missed him terribly. The staff at Alexandra House made her feel very welcome and she mixed well with other residents, she did not feel lonely. She also talked about how good
the food was and how comfortable her room was.

The home has a very welcoming atmosphere, and the small seating areas on the ground floor are more homely than the lager ones in some homes. The strength of Alexandra House has always been the staff, who at times went out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. I have always found them approachable
and quick to respond to any worries I might have. My parents were happy there, and the weekly visits by a GP was also a plus.

I can't thank Alexandra House and the staff enough for the care they showed my father whilst he was there recently for a short respite period. Although we were not able to visit due to Covid restrictions myself and my family were happy in the knowledge that dad was being well looked after. It was never
any trouble for the staff whenever we contacted to put us through to dad and arrange video calls with him and the staff kept us informed regularly of how dad was getting on and reassuring us that he was doing well. Once dad was back home the Manager took the time to call my mother just to see how dad was settling back home. I would not hesitate to use Alexandra House again in the future if and when required.

The level of care shown by the staff at Alexandra House has been excellent since my father was admitted there before Christmas. They focus on ensuring his safety and happiness. I have full confidence that they are providing him with the attention and care he needs. They also ensure that communication
is very much a two-way process and won’t hesitate to contact me for more urgent and non-urgent reasons. I feel that they are also managing the current pandemic well in regards to the happiness and hygiene of all. I look forward to visiting Alexandra House when safe to do so.

As a son who has his mum in this particular care home for the last three years, I would like to pass the following comments:- although I’m not allowed to visit at this present time due to Covid when I did visit, every day, I found it pleasant and clean and the staff were very friendly, and now I find
a new manager has been employed it seems to be even better. Congratulations to the manager and the staff is in order for all the help and care they provide to all the residents. My mum told me through WhatsApp what an enjoyable night she had on Saturday night where the residents had a movie night all provided by the manager and the team - popcorn and all. Anyway, thank you from the families of all the residents for all the care and support you all provide.

My aunt's wellbeing has improved beyond my expectations since she moved in.
The facilities, the staff and the atmosphere are lovely. The staff have really got to know her personality in such a short space of time.
My aunt has Down's Syndrome and is back how she was 10 years ago, brilliant.

Very welcoming staff. The manageress is very reassuring and informative. Good atmosphere in the care home and the areas are very well decorated in a nice way with lots of butterflies etc. The home has plenty of windows so the residents can see the outside world and a nice garden which will be a nice
change in the summer.

Every one of the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The management are very reassuring and this is very important when a member of your family has to be taken care of in a home. A friendly, happy atmosphere in the home and the different rest rooms are very good.

In a very quick space of time, my sister's care needs changed dramatically after a bad fall.
As I've lived in Gateshead all my life and had heard excellent reports of other users of Alexandra House past and present, I investigated the possibility of a vacancy to satisfy my sister's needs. So close
to Christmas I didn't hold much hope, but to my amazement, there was (room at the inn).
The atmosphere is lovely. I was invited for a look around immediately and shown the rapid response of staff when the alarm was raised.
Within a few days, my sister was safely installed in her new home.

My dad was a resident here for just short of three years. He was well cared for and was treated with dignity and respect at all times. My family were always made very welcome and a cup of tea was always there for us when we needed it. There is a lovely family feel to this home and the staff became
like our friends. Dad passed away peacefully here; the staff were fantastic to us that day. Thank you all for your kindness and support.

I can't praise this care home enough. My father was a patient from February to August and because of the standard of care he received, we had no hesitation to also place my mother-in-law there. The staff are so caring, not only to the patients but to the families, who are also going through a stressful
time.

Alexandra House has certainly changed my view of care homes. My Mother has been a resident for only three weeks and I already see a difference in her. Although she has dementia, she looks better and talks more. Cannot fault the staff, they are very friendly and helpful. The manager is excellent in dealing
with any questions or concerns. The home is very clean and tidy as are the rooms. The decoration is bright and cheerful throughout the home.
Cannot fault this care home.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.207)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.207) out of 10 for Alexandra House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.857 for Alexandra House is calculated as follows: ( (62 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 70 Ratings = 4.857
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.35 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Alexandra House is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8 = 0.75
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
