Kendal House is an exceptionally well run care home. It actually feels like a 'home' rather than an institution. The quality of both the management and the staff is professional but also very warm and human. I feel very grateful that my aunt was able to live there in the last two years of her life.

My mother-in-law died in Kendal House in June 2018 at 100. At Kendal, she was not only provided with excellent food and clean clothes and surroundings but she was given the best care I could I have hoped for. She was a lovely lady who deserved the best - I couldn’t have asked for more.
As her health
deteriorated she was lovingly cared for on many occasions. I was always kept informed about any health issues and concerns and this provided me with peace of mind. During her final days, the home, the doctor and I agreed she should be looked after and nursed by those who had cared for her and I’m sure grown to love her at Kendal House where she passed away.
As a frequent visitor, I was always made extremely welcome by all staff who welcomed you with a warm smile and an offer of refreshments. I became part of the Kendal community and this made my mother-in-law happy too.
I hope there will be more places like Kendal House - small, intimate and caring - a true home from home.

Kendal House is amazing. This was my dad's first experience and I could not have wished for anything better. Kendal House home is intimate and every member of staff was so helpful. This house feels like a home and the care my dad was given was so good. Everyone works as a team and the manager has been
amazing too, from the first time of meeting. This home gets 11/10 from me. Simply the best.

Staff are friendly and helpful to myself when I take my friend (a resident) out to go dancing and for a meal. My friend is well cared for. There is a good, friendly atmosphere in Kendal House. The residents are kept clean and happy, well fed and have regular entertainment and talks (mental stimulation).
The staff show sincere and consistent care and concern for residents. There are no unpleasant smells either!!!

I cannot rate the care that my father receives at Kendal House highly enough. The staff are all so attentive to his needs and every single member of staff always has a smile for us when we visit. It is obvious from the moment that you walk through the door that the level of care is extremely high. It
has a friendly homely feel and the decor and cleanliness is really good. After looking at a number of residential care homes, we were relieved when they had a place for him. It is the attention to detail that impresses us, such as the fact that all the residents all look so clean and tidy, and dressed in matching colours and care. This tells me that the Kendal House team really do care about their residents. The standard of meals served and choice of menus are very impressive as well. In fact, since becoming a resident, my father looks so healthy and is extremely happy and cannot wait to return after our trips out. As I do not live nearby this is a great relief to me.

When entering the 'minefield' of choosing a care home for your loved ones, trust your instinct and first impressions. I needed care for my mum who has dementia, we looked at and tried a few places in the area, but you just know that something wasn't quite right. I arrived at Kendal House without an
appointment and was shown around by the manager. Just sitting observing the staff and residents and discussing my mum's needs, it just felt 'right'. Mum came in for respite for a week last May and is still here, thriving, gaining weight, enjoying the company of staff and her new friends. My dad was living in 'Extra Care Accommodation' but was missing mum so much (65 years wed) that he wanted to try Kendal House too. He came here in August and is also thriving and happy he is back with mum.
The team of staff are brilliant and it's not just a job to them, they openly care....a big plus! So mum and dad are happy, so am I.
TRUST YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS AND INSTINCTS.

A wonderful care home that truly does offer a excellent standard of care to those that reside there. My relative settled in really well and has become a happier active member of the home. She has always been treated with such care and consideration by all who care for her there.

I’ve had experience of other care homes over the years and I can honestly say this is the best, no matter what day or time you visit. The atmosphere, condition, staff and cleanliness is always first class. The care given to my mum is as good as I would give myself. Maybe even better as apart from her
physical needs that are well taken care of her life is full there are activities, days out and entertainment at the same time if she doesn’t want to do anything she doesn’t have to, most importantly my mum is happy. I consider myself lucky that my mum lives in such an excellent care home that not only cares for my mum, but the wider family too.

My mother has been living in Kendal House for several years.
She is happy there and on every occasion I have contact with her either by phone or visiting I am impressed by the high standard of care she receives.
The staff are always kind and considerate with a good knowledge of my mother's likes and
her vulnerabilities.
There is an excellent range of activities for residents both in the local community and within the home.

From the moment we met the staff in Kendal house, we just knew it was the right place for our mum. On a spur of the moment visit, the home was clean, bright and the staff were friendly and attentive to the residents.

Each time we visit, there is a different activity going on to keep the residents

entertained, we particularly like that no one is ever sitting alone they are always together in the lounge chatting, watching TV or taking part in an activity.

Since moving mum there, we feel comfortable in our decision to place her in their care.

Following an unexpected change in family circumstances, my Grandma required some respite care.
I was very apprehensive about the situation but having visited Kendal House my fears were allayed.
Kendal House is a bright and welcoming home from home and the staff are outstanding.
Grandma has thrived
since arriving, thoroughly enjoying the social aspects and activities provided and having lived alone for 30 years, loves to have interaction with staff and residents.
Grandma's health and general demeanour have vastly improved with the excellent care and eating well-balanced meals with others around her.
Grandma and our immediate family are so impressed with Kendal House that we've made the decision to change a short term stay into a permanent one.
Words can't express the gratitude we all feel for Angela (manager), the owners, and the wonderfully experienced staff who have provided care and support to my Grandma but also to us at what had been a difficult time.
I highly recommend Kendal House.

My dad has been in Kendal House for two years and is extremely well looked after. He is always clean, tidy and well dressed. He is happy, relaxed and believes he is in his own house. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. My dads dementia makes him difficult to handle at times but the staff deal
with this very well and offer him lots of support. They are also very considerate and supportive to myself and my family.

My mother has been in Kendal House for 3 months now. We quickly had to find a new care home as her previous one closed down and Kendal House had 2 vacancies only, so we had to act quickly. Since my mother has moved in, she seems much happier. She likes the staff, who treat all the residents with compassion
and sense of humour. The home itself is very clean and being like a large house it is very friendly. The staff are very welcoming and encouraging. Relatives can visit and help out at any time. The residents enjoy the organised entertainment and trips out. My mother is enjoying all her food, freshly cooked on site and has put weight on since her arrival. All in all, a lovely home.

My 93 year old mother needed to have respite for 3 weeks. I visited several care homes within the Whitley Bay area and as soon as I entered Kendal House I had a very good feeling about it's atmosphere. I had an open invite, so I turned up unannounced and found the staff were most welcoming and the residents
engaged in a sing-song with the visiting organist.
The manager has been in charge since the opening, she has a lovely rapport with the residents and staff, whom are mature and love the job they are doing. The meals are all fresh and prepared on site, in the open-plan kitchen, by the chef, who again is a people person.

To see if my mother was of the same opinion, she was invited for her lunch and tea free of charge. Fortunately she loved the atmosphere, food etc. and decided to go to Kendal House, she has now returned home and would return without any problems, which makes it easier for me knowing that she is happy in a safe environment. Well done and a big thank you.

My 94 year old mother was a resident at Kendal House for 3.5 years until her death on 16 July. Throughout her time there she received a very high standard of care. The staff are led my an excellent manager. Both the manager and her colleagues were friendly, caring, compassionate and understanding towards
my mother's needs. During her residency her behaviour was occasionally challenging because of Alzheimers. Nevertheless during these periods the manager and her colleagues were throughout professional, balanced and showed that they did not just have the needs of my mother to consider, but also the needs of other residents.
The care home, because of its size provides a homely atmosphere for the residents. I was always impressed by the cleanliness of the communal rooms, toilets and my mother's bedroom. An excellent activities coordinator ensures that the residents are mentally and physically stimulated. The food is excellent. Overall a superb care home, Manager and staff.

I would like to recommend Kendal House to anyone looking to move into residential care.
My mum and Dad moved into Kendak House about 18 months ago.
Unfortunately my mum died a few months ago and my father recently became ill and has moved into nursing care.
During this time all the staff have been
dedicated, committed, compassionate, knowledgeable, friendly and caring.
The care they give is of a very high standard.
The staff are knowledgeable and understand the issues relating to individual residents.
The staff have good communication skills and when telephoning with worrying news communicate calmly, with compassion and thoughtfulness.
The food is home cooked are really good especially the cakes.
The rooms bathrooms and kitchen are spotless.
Kendal House has been a huge part of our lives and I would like to say a very big thank you to all the wonderful staff.

My mom was a resident of Kendal House for about four years until she recently passed away. The care and compassion that mom received from all the staff was exemplary. My Mom was the only remaining family member living in England as we had all emigrated to Canada some 42 years ago. The staff at Kendal
welcomed my Mom with open arms and she became an extended member of their family.

The staff went above and beyond any of my expectations, with staff members buying small gifts or even brining in a small Xmas tree into her room over the holidays. I was also very grateful that Kendal House were agreeable in my Mom receiving Palliative Care in their facility as it would have been very stressful for my Mom to be placed in a hospital near the end of her life. Words cannot express how grateful for their kind and compassionate care.

They truly were a blessing.

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.475)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.475) out of 10 for Kendal House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.600 for Kendal House is calculated as follows: ( (22 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 35 Ratings = 4.6
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kendal House is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.8 = 0.625
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
