Mum has been in Valley View for 15 months now. She is settled in the care home and considers it her home, and the care workers part of her extended family. The fact that the home is part of our community was very important in our choice of care home and Mum remaining there, after being initially placed
at Valley View straight from hospital in April 2020. The staff are incredible and work well over and above to provide an excellent standard of care for the residents. The manager of the care home is entirely approachable and responsive if any issues arise as are all of the senior staff. I commend Valley View and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. All care home staff have been on the frontline during the last 15 months, and the staff at Valley View deserve value and recognition for their remarkable work and endurance during the pandemic.

Valley View care home is a small friendly, caring home. The staff are hardworking, always find time to stop and chat, well-trained to care for the elderly. Making them feel at home. The food is always a good standard. Health and safety issues are always adhered to.

Right from the start, we had a warm welcome to our enquiry in December 2020 when we received a video tour. The care home manager quickly and cheerfully assessed our sister-in-law's needs and contacted her NHS counterparts. The staff are cheerful, polite and always helpful. My sister-in-law is being
very well looked after - thank you very much. We are so glad a neighbour of my sister-in-law recommended Valley View. The house has a cheerful and good atmosphere. Cordless phones to take to clients would be an improvement.

My father was a resident at Valley View for nearly two years until his death in May 2020. He initially entered the care centre because he was suffering from falls and dementia and could no longer live independently at home. His dementia sometimes made his behaviour difficult but the staff were always
patient. The centre is clean and the residents are well supervised. The food plentiful and although my father was a fussy eater, there were always alternatives on offer. I did have an issue with one member of staff, who I felt was not professional, but that person is no longer employed at the centre. At the end of his life, my father was cared for professionally and with dignity. On the whole, I would recommend Valley View.

My relative is extremely ill. The staff have gone over and above what my expectations were during this difficult time. They not only care for the residents, but they have also taken the time to show care and compassion for our family also. So glad we found this place. I have also observed the way they
care for other residents. They are treated with respect and dignity mixed with laughter and smiles. Staff work hard to maintain standards of cleanliness also.

My brother has been a resident of Valley View for approximately four months now receiving palliative care. All of the staff from the care home manager down to the carer who does the laundry could not have done more for my brother, from the minute you walk into the building to the moment you leave they
are constantly keeping you informed of his condition. I know that the times we cannot beat the care home that my brother’s welfare is the staff’s number one priority. I would 100% recommend the care home.

I have found everyone who works at this home is very friendly, tentative to each individual needs and professional. There is a lovely family type atmosphere that has made my mother's stay here very pleasant and reassuring on my part that she is receiving the best possible care. I couldn't have wished
for a better home for my mother to be residing in. Top marks to all who are involved in my mother's care.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.971)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.971) out of 10 for Valley View & Penshaw House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.476 for Valley View & Penshaw House is calculated as follows: ( (50 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.476
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.495 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Valley View & Penshaw House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 44 registered maximum number of service users is 8.8. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.8 = 0.795
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
