Hames Hall, Cockermouth, Cumbria

Situated just outside Cockermouth, Hames Hall is a Victorian country mansion that has been skilfully renovated to provide a suitable care environment for older people.

The home has also established strong links with the local community including a recent initiative that has allowed a prominent Cockermouth gardening group to voluntarily restore the fine walled Victorian kitchen garden. A network of disabled walkways and raised flowerbeds have allowed residents of the home and other visitors, ready access to all parts of the impressive garden which featured as part of the National Gardens Scheme open day programme in 2014.

Residents enjoy a spacious and comfortable environment, with scenic and secure grounds, nurse call systems in bedrooms and assisted bathing equipment. The home's conservatory and gardens afford probably the best views in Cockermouth, of the nearby Lakeland Fells.

A range of further health and care services ise made available for service users, with regular visits from GPs and chiropodists, as well as hairdressers.

Reviews

9.6 Hames Hall has a Review Score of 9.6 (9.634)

The Review Score of 9.6 (maximum of 10) for Hames Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Hames Hall in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.634 for Hames Hall is calculated as follows: ( (46 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.634

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hames Hall is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 5 positive Reviews (25 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 5 Reviews ÷ 5 Target = 1.000

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My mum and dad moved into Hames Hall in January 2016, aged 88 and 89, after struggling to cope in their bungalow. The wonderful staff made them very welcome and kindly helped them to adjust to living in a residential home.
My dad passed away earlier this year in Hames Hall, as he wanted, peacefully and with expert care.
I cannot recommend the staff highly enough as they continue to support and care for my mum.

Gillian - thank you for your very kind review. It's lovely for our dedicated staff to know how much they are appreciated.

Throughout the twelve months I have been here I have been very happy.

Hames Hall is a beautiful old house sat in delightful countryside. I am drawn into it so much that I wish I might live there also.
My wife will be in the beautiful spacious lounge or in her attractively presented bedroom. Her every need is catered for. Help is given with washing and dressing whenever necessary. A superb laundry and ironing service ensure she remains fresh and attractive and en suite facilities give her the privacy she needs.
An excellent team of carers is always nearby and she has an emergency call system available also.
A delightful sun lounge with glorious views and bleating sheep all around is a joy.
Weekly musical events encourage residents participation and regular visits from the hairstylist and chiropodist are much appreciated.
The enchanting dining room offers a wide range of foods and delicious meals. What more could anyone want?
Hames Hall is a home from home. My wife is very happy there. And I would be too!

Michael - thank you so much for your kind review. We look forward to continuing to care for your wife and please don't hesitate to ask if there's anything else we can do to help.

My wife has been a resident at Hames Hall for over four years. She is now 96, partially sighted with macular degeneration and with moderate dementia.
I am 92. My wife is happy and settled and has never made any complaint and enjoys the food.
I can visit at any time, usually five or six times a week and can join her in a meal if I wish.
I have celebrated Christmas, birthdays and diamond wedding there, as they occurred, with staff cooperation and participation. Visitors have commented it is more like a small country hotel, lacking any institutionalism.
The staff are all friendly, caring and competent.

Bill - I've just read your kind review. I'm very pleased that you and your wife are so well settled with Hames Hall - it's a pleasure having her with us and always good to see you as well.

The care at Hames Hall is excellent. The manager is most conscientious and very caring. Her values of respect and care for each resident provides a good example for the staff, who treat all the residents with love, gentleness and kindness. All are very professional.
The surroundings are delightful, with stunning views.

However, I see two areas for improvement:-
1, In warm weather, encourage residents to sit in the garden, where they can have some fresh air, watch the birds and enjoy the views. Sleeping in the lounge with the TV on and no fresh air is not good.
2, Offer a wider menu. Home made smoothies (fruit or veg), salads, choice of fresh fruit for sweets - try to educate the palate from high sugar content and cream to natural fruit salad, plain yoghurt, biscuits and cheese etc.

Angela Dawson, Registered Manager at Hames Hall responded to this review on 05 Sep 2017:

Mary, thank you so much for taking the time to complete your review of Hames Hall. With regard to the points that you raise in your review, I would like to respond as follows. We always work to ensure that we provide a healthy balanced diet that promotes each individual's nutritional needs and personal preferences. We are also aware of the need for fresh air and sunlight, particularly with regard to 'topping up' Vitamin D levels. However, all the options that we offer, whether they be activity related or of a dietary nature, will ultimately always be down to personal choice. Thanks again for raising your concerns with us.

Very impressed by the degree of care shown by it's staff of local employees. Care, consideration, compassion, good humour and expertise are all words that spring to mind when thinking of Hames Hall.
