Situated just outside Cockermouth, Hames Hall is a beautifully restored Victorian country mansion, thoughtfully adapted to provide a comfortable and supportive care environment for older people. The home retains its historic charm while offering modern facilities designed to meet residents’ needs.

Hames Hall has strong links with the local community, including a recent initiative where a well-known Cockermouth gardening group helped to restore the impressive walled Victorian kitchen garden. With accessible pathways, disabled-friendly walkways, and raised flowerbeds, residents and visitors can easily enjoy all areas of the grounds. The gardens have also been recognised as part of the National Gardens Scheme open day programme.

Inside, residents benefit from a spacious and welcoming environment, complemented by scenic and secure outdoor spaces. Bedrooms are equipped with nurse call systems, and assisted bathing facilities are available to ensure comfort and safety. The conservatory and gardens offer what are widely regarded as some of the finest views in Cockermouth, overlooking the nearby Lakeland Fells.

A range of additional health and wellbeing services is also available, including regular visits from GPs, chiropodists, and hairdressers, helping residents maintain both their health and quality of life.

My mum was homed in Hames Hall on the 20th of March 2024. I was impressed straight away by the caring atmosphere and cleanliness of the place. My mum over the weeks has required medical attention which was given to her by the caring staff at Hames Hall. 100% good feedback.

My mother was a resident at Hames Hall for three years and throughout her stay, she was always treated with kindness and respect.
The staff have supported me during what has been a difficult and emotional time, keeping me updated as to any changes/treatments/needs my mother had and I am very grateful
for their care and support of both my Mum and myself.

My mother had three weeks of respite in Hames Hall. The care was excellent, and the staff uniformly friendly, creating a happy, caring, secure, atmosphere. There were a variety of activities to keep residents occupied and stimulated. Excellent choice of food, allowing residents a good choice for meals.
The standard of rooms and setting of the home is exceptional. The whole atmosphere is a feeling of a home from home.

Hames Hall was impeccable, the food was 5 stars, the carers couldn't do enough for my mum.
The manager runs a very tight ship!
Thank you so much. Handing a loved one's care over to people you don't really know is hard. You made it very easy.
She actually said she enjoyed her week.
Lovely comfortable
room, so peaceful.

Hames Hall looked after my mother-in-law when she was no longer able to live in her own home. She was discharged from hospital into their care, and we cannot fault them. They offered her a home from home, and we were able to switch off and relax, knowing that all her needs were being met. Both the manager
and all the staff work great as a team. All the members of the team have shown patience, kindness and understanding. They went above and beyond what we would have expected. Thank you.

Dad moved into Hames Hall in January. He has a spacious and comfortable en-suite room with a colour TV and lots of wall space for pictures. Good range of public rooms with an especially nice conservatory. Young, enthusiastic staff with a jolly demeanour and an excellent and committed care home manager.

My mother spent a year in Hames Hall and I was impressed by the management from the very start. I was out of the country where my mother was discharged from hospital to Hames and that went very smoothly. Mum enjoyed the company of the staff and she was kept stimulated. Fortunately, she kept her mental
facilities to the end and the staff helped maintain them. In the final hours the staff made sure she was not alone when myself, my wife or my children could not be there. I cannot praise Hames Hall staff and management highly enough.

Our lady has been a resident for ten years, and throughout that time and our frequent visits, we have never witnessed anything other than courtesy, kindness, patience forbearance of the staff with any of the residents, sometimes in the most trying circumstances. A degree of kindness and attention which
has been highly commendable.
On entering the home, one is met with the absence of an institutional odour. Her room is also well-aired and sweet-smelling.
A factor which is very important to residents and visitors alike.
The staff are constantly alert to any possible health problems, and quickly take action if there is a need.
The kitchen is always spotlessly clean, and we have always been impressed by the look and the presentation of the food.
The staff have always appeared clean, cheerful and competent.
We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Hames Hall to others.

Mum has been at Hames Hall for just over four years and from the moment she began living there I knew that she should be safe, cared for and treated with respect. This has proved to be the case which in turn has allowed me to "rest easy" knowing that she is okay. the staff are kind, courteous people
who genuinely care for their residents. They are also very good at liaising with friends and relatives - they keep me informed of Mum's health and wellbeing, day or night and I always get a cup of tea and a piece of cake when I visit. Overall I would say that for Mum she's in the best place and she's happy.

My mother came to Hames Hall aged 101 and in failing health. The care she received from the moment of arrival at Hames Hall until she passed away was exemplary and admirable. Hames Hall's motto 'Taking Time to Care' was exactly what every member of staff exemplified in our experience. The atmosphere
really feels like home and is strikingly convivial. Residents are treated as family, with compassion and patience. The manager, nurses and other staff operated as a mutually-supporting, unfussy team. Nothing was too much trouble. Visitors were welcomed enthusiastically. The staff spontaneously adapted to my Mum's special needs and regularly informed us of her condition. They held my Mum's hand to give her comfort in her final moments and called her Priest so that he could attend at that unique moment. The staff consoled my family after she passed away and they shared our grief. Everything about Hames Hall evokes very personal care by exceptional professionals. Thank you, all, for everything.

The decision to place my mother into a residential home was not an easy one, but the compassion and support provided by the staff at Hames Hall has made each step of the transition as painless as possible. We now have peace of mind, knowing that she is always safe and well looked after by a very caring
and experienced team. She is treated with warmth and respect and no aspect of her physical or mental well-being is ever overlooked. Any more serious medical concerns have always been dealt with swiftly and with the highest level of professionalism. The staff are consistent, work as a team and have a lovely way with all the residents. They have encouraged my mother to socialise more and the benefits of this are evident. Hames Hall is set within beautiful grounds and my mother can see the large walled garden, sheep and the fells from her bedroom. The building has an inherent grandeur, and yet it is always homely and welcoming.

Hames Hall is an incredible setting for elderly care. While a beautiful building, set in beautiful gardens and grounds.
It is the standard of care offered to the resident that in the outstanding feature led by the manager. All staff are friendly and caring and built relationships with the residents
getting to know their interests and passions of the residents. They are warm and always make my parents, who are both here, laugh. there is a variety of in week entertainment for the residents too. I can't speak more highly of the place.

My mother has been at Hames Hall for 16 months now and she has received marvellous individual care from the dedicated team of staff. Not only do they look after her but they look after us too! They are unfailing in their availability and cheerful attitudes and always liaise with us if ever there are
any concerns at all about my mother. When she has been poorly, staff have gone above and beyond to make sure she has the right attention and have always kept us fully informed. When we visit, we are always pleased about everything we see.
On a practical note, I am always impressed by how such a beautiful but old building is kept so immaculately clean and this is a credit to all the staff.
Also, the food is home cooked to a very high standard and is served attractively, with special treats like birthday cakes being the favourite choice of the resident old people.
I would recommend Hames Hall to any family searching for a reliable caring home.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.856)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.856) out of 10 for Hames Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.856 for Hames Hall is calculated as follows: ( (229 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.856
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hames Hall is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
