Situated just outside Cockermouth, Hames Hall is a beautifully restored Victorian country mansion, thoughtfully adapted to provide a comfortable and supportive care environment for older people. The home retains its historic charm while offering modern facilities designed to meet residents’ needs.

Hames Hall has strong links with the local community, including a recent initiative where a well-known Cockermouth gardening group helped to restore the impressive walled Victorian kitchen garden. With accessible pathways, disabled-friendly walkways, and raised flowerbeds, residents and visitors can easily enjoy all areas of the grounds. The gardens have also been recognised as part of the National Gardens Scheme open day programme.

Inside, residents benefit from a spacious and welcoming environment, complemented by scenic and secure outdoor spaces. Bedrooms are equipped with nurse call systems, and assisted bathing facilities are available to ensure comfort and safety. The conservatory and gardens offer what are widely regarded as some of the finest views in Cockermouth, overlooking the nearby Lakeland Fells.

A range of additional health and wellbeing services is also available, including regular visits from GPs, chiropodists, and hairdressers, helping residents maintain both their health and quality of life.

Our mother moved to Hames Hall at the end of March 2019, aged 96, as she could no longer look after herself. She always said she couldn't have made a better choice, referring to her Hames Hall family as the most lovingly caring people. During her last few months, as she declined, that excellent care
was not just of Mum but of us, her family. Their dedication and skills could not be bettered and that is what was most important to us.
Reply from Angela Dawson, Registered Manager at Hames HallAll the team are so grateful for you sharing your experience of our home and for your kind words. It is really important to us to know that your mother was happy and felt at home.

Management and staff make a real effort to maintain the feeling of a home from home for residents. For example, I can choose whether to eat in the restaurant with other residents or in my room alone. They also provide me with my current medication and appropriate timings when I go out to visit family
and friends.
Reply from Angela Dawson, Registered Manager at Hames HallSincere thanks for your review, a 'Home from Home' environment is what we strive for.

When we were looking at Care Homes for our mum, Hames Hall stood out amongst the others as the staff were so friendly and all seemed to genuinely love their jobs. The home was also spotlessly clean, nicely furnished and well decorated set in lovely grounds and with a beautiful view of the fells. Unfortunately,
our mum was only there for 3 months before she died, but during that time we can honestly say we were never worried about her or the care she received. This was especially true in the last few weeks of her life when the care was exemplary. We would highly recommend Hames Hall without hesitation for anyone looking for a care home.

My mother was in Hames Hall for two years. During this time she was suffering from Vascular Dementia. I found the care provided by the home to be both supportive and inclusive. My mother formed happy and stable relationships with her carers who always treated her with respect and were positive and cheerful
her end of life care was excellent. The staff went above and beyond and treated her like a family member.

My experience since coming to live at Hames Hall, my first greeting was full of warmth, which gave me a feeling of excitement. This feeling was enhanced by the love and caring which came to me. My experience since then has been positive; for instance the serenity of the manager, despite her busy life,
is infectious. Also, I find the carers warmth, sympathy and readiness to help in any situation, fantastic. Hames Hall being specious provides the residents with "creature comforts" and gives scope for entertainment in the form of "music for health" including exercises, electric guitar playing, pantomime and enjoying poetry. The resident's rooms are comfy, they are well cared for by the day and night staff. I heartily recommend Hames Hall as an ideal place to make a home here,

The change of ownership to Churchlake Care did not go smoothly, whatever their intentions. Communications with residents and relatives seemed poor/non-existent. Hopefully, they will improve this as they acquire further care homes.
These issues seem to be being resolved and hopefully, Hames Hall will
continue to provide the excellent care it is known for.

We have used Hames Hall for a number of years now for respite care. My mother, sister and I never worry when my dad goes in, we know he will be very well looked after. The care he receives is excellent, the staff are fabulous. We have no complaints at all and this care home from us as a family deserves
5-stars. Brillliant.

My 99-year-old Mum has been a resident at Hames Hall since November 2019. From the very outset, all the staff have been fantastic. My Mum is so well looked after. I am always kept well informed and made very welcome whenever I visit. Mum could not have a better place to live now she is unable to
care for herself.

My 100-year-old mother lived in supported independence until an upper arm fracture compromised her mobility. After 6 weeks in hospital when covid was at its peak she was medically fit to leave but extremely frail. I arranged for her to live at Hames Hall where she became transformed to her old self
over the period of quarantine under the care of the staff. She spent a happy 101st birthday there and made several friends. My relief at finding such a caring and friendly home for her was immense.

Hames Hall have cared for my mother for 5 years until her death at 98 in December 2019. Their care and compassion were exemplary with infinite kindness, patience and humour. The communication with me and my family was always warm, tactful and reassuring. All the staff went beyond the call of duty. I
cannot recommend Hames Hall highly enough.

My dear wife had been a resident at Hames Hall for almost two years until her death at the end of January this year. She had suffered much and had endured many falls and operations. But she had found comfort in the loving embrace of her carers in her beautiful room overlooking the attractive garden
and hills behind. The carers have shown me great kindness also. With their help and support, my wife's ashes have now been interred in the enchanting garden at Hames Hall and a memorial plaque placed nearby. Beautiful red roses, gypsophila and polemonium grace the spot. I have remembered Hames Hall in my Will. The carers have given us both so much. It gives me great joy and comfort to be able to do this.

My mother entered the home almost 4 months in different circumstances and the home was very supportive and did all they could to ease her transition and protect her from a difficult relation. The home is clean, well staffed and well run. There are activities and day trips for the residents. There is
plenty of food and some of it is grown in the garden. There are very nice grounds and it is in a pleasant setting. The staff are mostly very friendly and have good relationships with my mother. We know my mother is safe and well looked after.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.856)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.856) out of 10 for Hames Hall is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.856 for Hames Hall is calculated as follows: ( (229 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.856
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hames Hall is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 25 registered maximum number of service users is 5, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
