Lambton House is a family owned residential care home, situated in open countryside on the outskirts of Bournmoor, near to Chester-le-Street & Houghton-le-Spring, not far from the historic city of Durham.

With 57 ensuite bedrooms, communal areas, a quiet library lounge & in-house hairdressing salon, the original twentieth-century property has been seamlessly extended to be spacious, light, comfortable & dementia-friendly.

An exceptional living environment has been created to encompass all the needs and requirements for any person in need of care, comfort, compassion and friendship.

The home is surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens offering residents and visitors a peaceful and tranquil setting to enjoy open country views beyond the home's boundaries. The garden hosts outdoor entertainment events during the summer.

Lambton's garden is also home to the 'Residents' Rainbow Tearoom' and 'Pit Stop Bar'. The tearoom opened Aug 2020 is a social meeting place for residents and families to use. In May 2021 the residents' private 'Pit Stop Garden Bar' was opened offering another social stimulation meeting place. The snug-style bar is also in the main garden building with a local mining heritage and reminiscence themed interior. The bar is heated and offers visitors a TV, magnetic dartboard, dominoes and card games.
The garden building has a toilet.

In 2023, a cinema projector and large drop down screen was installed in the home for resident film evenings.

The Lambton team consists of senior care managers, professionally trained carers, activities co-ordinators, domestic, maintenance, housekeeping & kitchen staff.

Lambton House is registered with the National Dignity Council, promoting and committing to Dignity in Care. It is also a member of NAPA, (National Activity Providers Association).

My sister-in-law's contact and experience with Lambton House goes back a number of years - including periods of respite, and latterly, full-time care. Over this period of time I have found all staff to be professional, courteous and extremely caring. Often putting themselves out to even answering queries
whilst during their own, well-deserved, personal leave. Recently they have managed a very sensitive transition with great skill and care - and I am extremely grateful for that. They employ a sensitive approach to the necessary/essential security of the centre assuring the safety and well-being of all of their residents. The home itself is very well-appointed in a tranquil part of Durham County. It has beautiful gardens, with tea rooms, that are extremely well looked after so that residents, carers and visitors can enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and, especially lovely, the company of horses in the adjoining fields. A special thank you Lambton House for all of your care and understanding.

Not at all impressed with the standard of care. Unhelpful manager was unwilling to take my friend's needs into account even though she had capacity. They wouldn't discuss her needs with me as I was only a friend even though my elderly friend had capacity and wanted me to be involved in her care. But
on the day she was due to go home, the transport wasn't available and they had cleaned out her room so she had nowhere to go. Guess who had to get her home with no help at all. They couldn't get her out of that home quick enough. Absolutely shocking considering how much she was paying for her care. They were quick to accept my input when they needed to get her home but didn't want to hear my input to help her while she was at the home. I'm sorry to say that I would never advise anyone to become a resident at this home, it is more like a prison than a care home.
Reply from Marie Grant, Registered Manager at Lambton HouseYour opinion of the standard of care provided is based on your visits to the home during your friends' ten-night stay, a relatively short period of time. Your friend has stayed here previously on occasions for respite breaks, raising no concerns. I was Reg Manager at the time. Your friend does have capacity. Care needs would be discussed with her directly & her family (appointed next of kin). We adhere to the guidance on confidentiality & GDPR. There are limitations as to what can be discussed. We understood transport was arranged. Your friend asked the staff to contact you to assist her. Staff don't accompany a resident home on discharge if already accompanied. I assume more like a prison than a care home refers to coded doors. Lambton is not purpose-built, with a complex layout of corridors, lounges, external doors & staircases. When caring for some residents diagnosed with dementia, coded doors are standard to minimise risk, providing security & safety. Thank you for your feedback.

After searching and reviewing many different care homes for my Mum I found Lambton House following a recommendation from a friend. Mum has now been at Lambton House for 2 months and has thrived during that time. The care and range of activities have exceeded our expectations and it is quite clear that
the care of residents is prioritized. Activities are inclusive and Mum has engaged in them all surprising us with the range of things she is willing to try or experience. Mum is very much looking forward to the summer when she can get out into the gardens more often. Staff are always there to support and are aware of Mum's needs and are so friendly and welcoming. Lambton House is very well managed, led, and organized which has made Mum's transition from living at home to living in a care home so easy - thank you to all the Lambton House team!

My mam arrived at Lambton House Care Home June 2023, if anyone in our position can imagine it was a difficult journey for us all. To choose a home that would possibly become my mam's home, but luck was on our side as the home itself is so fitting and the welcome we all received the first day on arrival
and still remains to continue was so thoughtful, helpful and very supportive. It was a sunny day and we were fortunate to spend our afternoon in the surroundings of the beautiful gardens, tearoom and the residents' bar entertained by a talented singer, it was an exceptional day. The tearoom and bar are places we use, it’s a pleasure to enjoy as well as the beautiful gardens, especially in the spring and summer. I have left the very best to last, the management and staff who arrange the very best of care within Lambton House, every member of staff within the home is friendly, thoughtful and so caring, if we have a problem to share they listen and assist immediately, a big thank you to all the staff.

Mum entered the home at the end of March 2023. She was made to feel welcome from the outset. The carers are marvellous - they are lovely to Mum and genuinely want to take care of her. Activities are appropriate; they are many and varied to cater for everyone. The carers encourage Mum to join in the
activities that she is able to manage.

Dad has been in Lambton House for almost six months now, the level of care he receives is exceptional, I have no doubt that after visiting many other homes that Lambton House is unique in the care the residents receive, various daily activities, professional singers, which in summer months families
can enjoy, lovely bedroom, the pit stop bar and the tea room are an added bonus. Dad loved going on a visit that was on his wish list. The staff also give up their free time to attend some events and take the residents out. Food was always nice but following the appointment of a new chef it’s outstanding, would be a nice idea if we could purchase some of the homemade cake to have with a cuppa when visiting which could generate funds for the resident's activities. I am kept well informed about Dad's well-being and feel I could contact Lambton at any time to chat about Dad. All the staff are dedicated and hard-working, with the care for the residents at the core of everything they do.

My mum has been in Lambton House Care Home for just over 12 months now. She has settled in really well. The Staff and Management have been excellent in their care, patience and encouragement in helping mum settle into her new home. Entertainment and activities are second to none. Also, beautiful outdoor
area with gorgeous tearooms and verandah. It gives us great peace of mind that she is getting well looked after with lovely home-cooked meals and snacks.
The social media page helps us feel more connected and see what she and the other residents are doing throughout the week.
I would highly recommend Lambton House Care Home to anyone looking for a caring residential home. The Staff and Management team do an excellent job.

I have someone resident in this care home with dementia and all I can say is the care received is exceptional. The staff and management are a credit to their profession. The residents' well-being and care is first and foremost. They have plenty of activities and entertainment, it is like a home from
home. Cleanliness is 100%. I have visited a couple of care homes locally and there is no comparison. I highly recommend Lambton Care Home 100%.

The care given at Lambton House is outstanding. All members of the team really care about the residents and go the extra mile to keep them happy and engaged. Moreover, the home itself is kept to a really high standard and the grounds outside are wonderful. The team constantly arrange a large number
of varied activities for the residents. I believe my dad is very happy there and I have great peace of mind knowing he is at Lambton Care home and being looked after by a wonderful team.

My mother has been at Lambton House Care Home for fifteen months now and I have had only positive experiences of Lambton House, the facilities and its staff.
There is regular entertainment, e.g. singers. The entertainment co-ordinators keep my mum amused with bingo, arts/crafts to name a few. My mum
has built some lovely relationships with the staff who evidently genuinely care about her.
The staff communicate effectively with me on a regular basis which is reassuring and they are now very familiar with her as an individual in respect of her needs, both physically and emotionally.
There has been a new chef of late and the food, my mum reports, is even better than before! She particularly loves fish and chip Friday and the food-tasting evenings that are put on when residents can sample a range of different foods, e.g. Chinese.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Lambton House to anyone looking for a caring residential home for a loved one.

My experience, up to now, is that this home is at the very top of the care home league if there is such an animal. It has that homely atmosphere about it which must be so hard to accomplish with so many people with so many different health or mental problems. The home is kept scrupulously clean. It
doesn't have that horrible smell of body waste and unwashed bodies at all. A fault I found and encountered sometimes in the work I did before retirement. This is because of the attention the staff carry out to the health, well-being and cleanliness to the residents, and of course the cleanliness of the home. This care and attention to all I have said that I bless and value the day the management accepted my loved one into their care. Also, I must mention the activities staff who do a wonderful, difficult job in keeping the residents attended and occupied. Finally, my thanks and gratitude to the management for keeping us aware of what our loved ones are up to through social media.

My friend of 45 years was admitted to Lambton House in November and has settled better than her son and I anticipated. She was very lonely at home after her husband died in February 2019. She lost friends during Covid and her short term memory deteriorated and she became depressed. Since moving into
Lambton her mood has lifted and our fun loving friend has returned. Staff are very professional and all residents are treated with respect and dignity. Activities/entertainment is fantastic, with lots of social interaction. A big thank you to all Lambton staff for the care and support given to our loved ones. In my opinion this is a well managed 5 star residential care home.

My mam has been at Lambton House for three months now and I can honestly say I could not be happier with the care she is receiving. The staff are so kind, always there with a smile, a joke or words of encouragement, they are very approachable and always ready to help. Mam thoroughly enjoys the activities
and entertainment from hair and beauty to bingo, dominoes, and the garden and grounds, which are extensive and include a pub and tea room! To quizzes and crafts and baking - the list is endless, as it would seem is the energy of Lambton House staff! Mam has a beautiful room, everything is so immaculately clean She is so well looked after. It was such a worry placing her in care but I am delighted we found Lambton House, a big thank you to each and every member of staff who has helped mam to settle and who care for her with such kindness, empathy and compassion You are all amazing!

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.797)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.797) out of 10 for Lambton House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 25 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.797 for Lambton House is calculated as follows: ( (262 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 295 Ratings = 4.797
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Lambton House is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 57 registered maximum number of service users is 11.4, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
