Our family entrusted this care home with the care of our Nan, Dorothy. Following her death, both the Coroner's inquest and the care home's own internal investigation have left us deeply concerned.
The Coroner concluded that Nan died an accidental death, with the medical cause of death being a pulmonary embolism following a fractured femur after a prolonged period on the floor ("long lie").
The care home's own investigation identified serious failings following her fall, including failures in falls management, escalation, communication, documentation, clinical oversight and management. It also concluded that opportunities for earlier assessment, diagnosis and treatment were missed.
As a family, we believe people considering this home should be aware of these findings and make their own informed decision. Every resident deserves safe, timely and appropriate care, and every family deserves confidence that concerns will be acted upon promptly.

We hope that lessons have been learned.

Reply from Rob Noel, Regional Manager (North West) at Wellfield Residential Care Home

Firstly, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dorothy's family. Dorothy was a loved member of the Wellfield Care Home family for over three happy years and is remembered with great affection by residents and staff alike.

We are saddened that you feel Wellfield let Dorothy down. We fully...

My mother has been a resident since mid November. I call at various times of the day and the care the staff give is very consistent. She has three meals a day with a choice and in between she is always offered a hot drink and a biscuit. The entertainment is varied and she sometimes wants to join in. They have a hair dresser and a podiatrist who visit (both at extra cost) so as her mobility is poor, it makes it so much more easier and convenient for her.

The carer staff have always been friendly and attentive during visits to see my mother. However I have needed to raise a few issues lately. Mainly around my mother being left for long periods on her own, and also equipment being left in her room.

Overall the care is good and I understand the pressures the carers work under, but this is now my mother's home and needs to be treated as such.

Reply from Laura Blythe, Care Home Manager at Wellfield Residential Care Home

I am very pleased to hear that you have found our care staff to be friendly and attentive, and I will ensure this positive feedback is shared with the team. I am, however, sorry to hear about the concerns you have raised regarding your mother being left alone for extended periods and equipment...

Mum lived at Wellfield for 2 years and 6 months. I cannot fault the care, love and attention she received from each and every staff member. Wellfield has a lovely, welcoming, family-friendly feeling. There were plenty of activities, outings and visits from singers, school children, therapy dogs etc. which she really enjoyed. She had a lovely room and it was so reassuring for us as a family to know she was safe and happy. During her last few weeks when she was very poorly it was comforting to know she was surrounded by so much love and care, and she was able to spend her remaining time at Wellfield - a place she called home. Thank you.

A difficult visit made into a lovely visit by friendly and approachable staff and residents. Even a staff member's nan is there, which means a lot to me - if staff are happy for their own family to reside there, then it must be good!

My grandma recently moved into Wellfield Care Home. She is very independent but was recently struggling to take good care of herself at home and feeling lonely at times. I cannot speak highly enough of the care and attention the team at Wellfield have given Grandma since she arrived. She is so much more relaxed and happy since she has been there. When we visit the staff are always extremely kind and helpful and they have really made her feel at home and settle in within a very short space of time. The communal areas are great for grandma and she has met like-minded people who she enjoys talking to, which is a great feeling for the family to know she is not only safe and well cared for but enjoying her time there. I cannot thank the team at Wellfield enough, you are outstanding!

Wellfields has a nice atmosphere as you enter and feels homely. The staff are very good and have a nice way with the residents. They are very caring and patient. The food is varied and good. they have events and entertainment each week. There is a terrace outside, which is very quiet and so nice to sit outside when visiting.

My mother spent only a few days in Wellfield. This was intended to be a short-term placement for assessment following a period in the hospital. Sadly, she fell ill again and had to return to the hospital, where she passed away.

My partner and I, other family members and friends of my mother visited several times during her stay. Her accommodation was comfortable and appropriate to her needs. My overriding impression of Wellfield was how friendly and caring all the staff were and the extent to which they went out of their way to try and make mother as comfortable as possible.

Wellfield is a happy and caring community where Mum has been a resident since February 2020. Mum has settled very well and is happy, and most importantly, feels safe. Management and all the staff have been excellent. Mum has also made new friendships with the other residents as well. "Overall, thumbs up".

I want to say thank you so very very much for all that you did for our Granny and for us, too, during her time with you at Wellfield. Our living far away from her, and then all the Covid restrictions, meant that we couldn't visit her as often as we wanted to, but we knew that she was always in safe, friendly, understanding and such patient hands. It was so comforting to see that she came to feel at home with you, after her initial inner turmoil. In particular, I am hugely grateful for how you all pulled together in her last few days, clearly putting what you knew were her best interests at the forefront of everything, and going above and beyond (even driving around all the pharmacies in the area at a weekend to get the prescribed medication she needed so that she did not have to go into hospital unnecessarily!) Thank you so so very much for all you did to make me welcome and comfortable when I stayed with her during her last day, and for your sensitive aftercare of us all, too.

I have had a good relationship with staff at the home, and although it has been difficult for my friend to adapt to her loss of independence and mobility. I believe that she has received good care. She seems to have the respect of the staff who look after her.

It’s such a difficult decision for families to have to make when choosing a care home for their loved ones.
I am so glad that Wellfield was chosen for my oldest friend.
A very well-run home with such a homely feel and caring staff.
My friend always appears content and very importantly her personality is allowed to still shine through, helped by the frequently arranged activities and entertainment in the home.
Well done to the manager and his team.

Keep up the good work. I must give a little mention to the office administrator, always so very helpful.

My mother had a short stay in Wellfield but enjoyed the stay with the lovely and caring staff. She was well looked after, I would personally like to thank everyone who cared for her and the staff in the offices who kept me in touch with everything going on in the home and booking my visits to see my mother.

Thanks again.

The family are very happy that Mum has settled in so well. She is eating well, comfortable and well looked after. The management is amazing and nothing is too much trouble and the staff are really kind. We were initially quite anxious about going down the care home route but feel we have made the correct decision for our mum. Thank you Wellfield.

My name is Rachael, I grew up in Holywell, Flintshire, and have lived there for most of my life. I moved to Ormskirk in 2005 to study Social Work Studies at Edgehill University. This is where I found my passion for caring for other people and decided that I wanted to work in social care. I believe that there is no better reward, than helping others at any stage in life, and to see them live their life as happy as they can be in an environment where they are safe and cared for.

I am currently working towards a qualification in Health and social care advanced practice at level 5.

My current role here at Wellfield is Deputy Care Manager, this involves supporting the Manager and team in providing a high standard of care to our residents, ensuring that all their daily living needs are met and ensuring that we are providing a service that they deserve and to be able to live out their life as comfortable and as happy as they can be.

Before working at Wellfield, I spent 9 years working with children and young adults who had a learning disability, our role was to support the individuals in a residential setting to learn and develop new life skills and to support them to live as independently as possible in a home environment. I spent the last two years working there as a team leader, where I led the team of life skills instructors. I have also spent 4 years working in a nursing home where I was also a senior for the last 6 months that I worked there.
