The quality of care is outstanding. Residents are treated with kindness and patience. There are regular celebrations which relatives are welcomed to take part in. The food is excellent. Managers and carers are fully aware of individual needs including medical conditions and carry out advice from medical
and other specialists. I always feel welcome there. I can raise concerns with all staff and know they will address them. The Manager and Deputy Manager are always approachable and make time to talk face to face as well as by phone or email. High standards are consistent across the entire team. They strive to make the home comfortable and enjoyable. I was particularly grateful for the understanding and support given to us when we were in the process of adjusting to a loved relative needing residential care. I am confident that my relative is safe and happy in Hawthorn Court.
Reply from Teri Edwards, Home Manager at Hawthorn CourtDear Stephanie, Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. We are truly delighted to care for your sister and she is a valued and lovely member of our community. It means a great deal to us to know that you feel happy and confident in the care she receives at Hawthorn Court. We're especially pleased that we could support you during your sister's transition into residential care. We understand how challenging and emotional this time can be, both for individuals and their families, so it's important to us that you felt supported throughout the process.
I will be sure to share your lovely feedback with the entire team, as it will mean a lot to them and serves as great encouragement for the work they do every day.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience - it is greatly appreciated.

Awful place!! Mam was always distressed or medicated, sometimes to the point she couldn't open her eyes let alone walk or talk. Hair was left unwashed for weeks. She was rarely in her own clothes, one time I visited we were let in and the carer walked off leaving us, didn't talk to us or tell us where
she was. We couldn't find her downstairs so went upstairs and found her half naked lying on her bed crying! There wasn't a single pair of trousers in her wardrobe for me to dress her and only one pair of knickers and when asked staff said they were in the laundry! Bedroom furniture was broken and crammed with bedding. Residents are left watching tv, never saw any sign of engagement/activities. Management never introduced themselves, took 3 months to ask for contact details and were never available to discuss our concerns. We have since moved her , she's happy and well looked after and hasn't been given medication to sedate her at all which makes me question if she ever needed it??
Reply from Teri Edwards, Home Manager at Hawthorn CourtAs per our previous response to the review regarding your mother, we were pleased that the family recently reconnected with her and would very much have welcomed the opportunity to discuss any concerns directly with you at the time, so that we were able to resolve all any and all concerns. In order to protect the dignity, privacy and confidentiality of our residents, we do not feel able to discuss the details of these matters further within a public forum. However, we remained committed to supporting your mother whilst she resided within our Home and always endeavoured to ensure that she was comfortable, cared for and supported with the compassion and respect that she deserved. We wish you and your family all the very best for the future.

Every time we visited she was either distressed, sleeping or zoned out on medication to the point where she couldn't communicate, stand and had wet herself. We know she had challenging behaviorial issues but should have been dealt with appropriately. Her room was always untidy with bedding crammed into
broken drawers and wardrobe. She didn't have many clothes at first until we brought some in for her with her name on,they went missing instead she was given items that were too small and stained, when asked always told they were in the laundry. When questioned staff about things very negative about everything. Management never introduced themselves or enquired who we were tried to ring but never available or didn't answer phone. One time she had had her lunch in her room on a child's small plastic plate why we don't know. Her hair hadn't been washed for weeks we washed and cut it ourselves in her room told staff we had done it. We have now moved her to another home.
Reply from Teri Edwards, Home Manager at Hawthorn CourtDear Jean,
We are very sorry to hear of your concerns and experiences, this is not what we would want or aspire towards.
We were committed to administering the correct medication for your sister-in-law, as prescribed by health professionals. We were delighted that you'd recently re-connected with your sister-in-law and always strive to maintain residents' dignity and wellbeing. Where family support may be limited, we try to provide additional support with clothing, hair care, podiatry etc. Unfortunately, the Home Manager is not on site 7 days a week however, they do maintain contact with the home/team so they can provide support, as needed. We always try to work effectively with families, recognising the vital role they play in the lives of our residents and we would have very much welcomed the opportunity to discuss any concerns directly with you, at that time.
We wish you both all the very best for the future.

My mother has been a resident here for 18 months and the team are fantastic. After a few initial concerns that were rectified quickly, we are very happy with the level of care that my mother is receiving.
The manager particularly goes above and beyond in all areas and is one of the most caring and
empathetic people I've ever met. We have total peace of mind that my mother is being cared for and, just as importantly, respected, by all of the team at Hawthorn Court.
The home is flexible on visiting, and during inevitable outbreaks of Covid the safeguarding that's in place installs confidence that the welfare of the residents is of the utmost importance.
Whether it's on the phone or when visiting, there is always someone on hand to speak to or ask questions.
Reply from Bethan Evans, CEO at Hawthorn CourtThank you so much for taking the time to review Hawthorn Court. As your review indicates, things don't always go as we would hope, but we will always try to make any improvements quickly and safely. We always strive to do our very best for our residents and your kind words will be very much appreciated by the manager and her team.

We are very happy with the care my Dad receives at Hawthorn Court, he’s been residing there for 12 months now due to Alzheimer’s.
It’s a small care home so it feels homely and intimate. My dad is very well looked after by all the staff there. They are vigilant when my dad is poorly and keep us informed
if there are any concerns. We feel confident he is safe and we are welcome at any time there to see my dad.
Reply from Bethan Evans, CEO at Hawthorn CourtThank you so much for taking the time to write this review - and for your kind words. It is our pleasure to support Dad and I am pleased to see that you are welcomed when you visit the Home. I will share your review with the Manager and her team as they will be delighted to hear this.

Wanted to thank you for looking after my wife’s mother.
She passed away on the 4th of September this year and could not have received better care during her stay there.
The staff could not have been more helpful and caring to both my mother-in-law and our family.
All the staff were great but one
member of staff, in particular, guided us through this most difficult time and we shall be forever grateful.
Reply from Bethan Evans, Managing Director at Hawthorn CourtThank you so much for your lovely review and your kind words; which is much appreciated. From the first meeting with the Manager, she listened and understood our father’s needs and empathised. The family felt they could ask anything and she gave us so much of her time. There was flexibility on the selection of a room. We received advice on setting up the room and excellent service from
the maintenance man. He was so willing and helpful. The staff welcomed our father and all his children. He was well cared for and the staff were sensitive to his privacy and independence. He enjoyed all the meals and was allowed to choose his seat both in the Dining Room and the Lounge. Excellent communication was maintained with the family, especially with the challenges of Covid. The family were pleased with how quickly our father settled. There was flexibility on visits and we were made to feel comfortable with him. When our father’s health deteriorated, the staff gave their all, managing his care; taking advice from doctors and paramedics; constantly keeping the family informed.

My Mum has been resident at Hawthorn Court since December 2019. She has settled in really well and has been looked after by the staff. They are all very caring and friendly and great with the residents and their families. Mum loves the home-cooked food and the home is spotlessly clean. Would definitely
recommend.

Current Review Score: 7.3 (7.292)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.3 (7.292) out of 10 for Hawthorn Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 3.4 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 3.417 for Hawthorn Court is calculated as follows: ( (36 Excellents x 5) + (1 Poors x 2) + (23 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 3.417
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hawthorn Court is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.8 = 0.625
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
