Kirk House, Belfast, Belfast, County Down

Kirk House offers 24 hour care with privacy, independence and companionship whilst acknowledging each resident’s individuality. It is situated in the east of the city, approximately six miles from the centre of Belfast in a well-established residential area with a regular bus service and bus stops located close to Kirk House.

Kirk House is located on two floors and the second floor is easily reached by stairs or a centrally located passenger lift. Handrails and ramps are provided and corridors are suitable for wheelchair use. The grounds are laid out in lawns and flowerbeds, with patio and seating areas providing for ease of access.

A range of flatlets are available. Four of them have been designed for couples, two of which are suitable for disabled residents.

There are four communal living rooms with dining areas that are furnished and equipped to a comfortable standard. Each living room is situated beside a group of ten flatlets. This is to allow residents to eat and meet together in smaller groups and so keep Kirk House intimate and enable residents to retain their individual dignity and privacy.

It is Kirk House's aim to offer and maintain a warm, relaxed and homely environment, where residents view Kirk House as their home rather than somewhere they live because they may need help and support. This has been achieved by combining good accommodation with a responsible and flexible personal care service.

Kirk House has now adapted one corridor of flatlets into 'Memory Lane', providing specialist care for people living with dementia. This corridor of nine flatlets which are the same size and layout as the flats in the main building, have been refurbished with design features to support research-based approaches for people with dementia. The staff team have completed specialist Dementia Care training.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.778 for Kirk House, Belfast is calculated as follows: ( (84 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.778

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

We are all so thankful our relative got a place here when she did. She has vascular dementia but settled in well and the staff are all amazing so kind and patient, pleasant, helpful and friendly. Kirk House is truly a home from home. There are lots of activities and outings and the residents have a say in all that goes on. The relatives meetings are helpful too and the staff listen to any concerns or ideas we might have. Everyone, residents and friends/relatives are treated with respect.

My mother has been a resident for almost four years. She has dementia and so has additional needs. All her needs are met to the highest possible standard. All staff members have been trained to understand the particular challenges that dementia brings. Without exception, my mother is treated as a valuable, cherished, important individual. This is truly person-centred care and is of a remarkably high standard. All residents, whether or not they have dementia or other extra needs, (medical, mobility) are given opportunities to be involved in a variety of activities. The residents' forum helps to shape the service in Kirk House and beyond. There is also a relatives' meeting which offers information and support to relatives. The cleanliness and hygiene are excellent and the food is tempting and delicious. I can't speak highly enough about Kirk House, its staff and managers.

My mother has been a resident of Kirk House, Belfast for over 20 years and is so happy. The standard of care she receives is exceptional and I never cease to be surprised at the attention to detail of staff in ensuring that all her needs are identified and met in a timely manner. I consider she has two families; her biological family and her Kirk House, Belfast family. Hope this is helpful.

I can only give praise to the care my mum receives from all the staff and never asks for anything she requires that they do not aim to provide. She is very happy and content and considers it her home.

The home is warm, welcoming, bright, airy and clean. Staff go to great lengths to ensure all residents have all their needs met - physical, emotional and spiritual. They respect both residents and relatives/carers of residents and make every effort to include them in decision-making as well as in the regular activities of the home. Staff and management are largely forward thinking and keen to innovate, with particular reference to inter-generational work and dementia friendly initiative within the community. It is a peaceful and calm environment.
