Overall happy with the care mum had.A thank you to all staff who looked after her.
We're brought up to date on her medical progress every now and again. Perhaps could have been regular. Someone was always available if I needed to speak to management or head of unit.

My Dad has been a resident at Fern Gardens for 3 years, with Dementia and is on the WREN Unit.
Unfortunately during his time here he has broken his hip and is now bed bound, but the staff knew him well before his fall as he used to wander around chatting with them!
They know how to get the best
out of my Dad having known him a long time - they know he loves his tea & biscuits and he seems happy here for the whole time. He is always clean and shaved, and any minor cuts or bruises are always brought to our attention which we appreciate. Thank you Team Fern!

I was very upset that my husband had to move into a nursing home but the staff are all so kind and caring and they have made us both feel very welcome. Of course it is very difficult when a loved one has complex and conflicting needs, but the staff and GPs understand this and they are working together
as a team to try to resolve any problems. I can see my husband is eating very well and that he is being well cared for by all the staff at Fern Gardens.

My overall rating is excellent because whenever I visited my Aunt at Fern Garden Care Home, I noticed the cleanliness of the facility, the Staff were easily available for the Resident as well as to the Visitors, and timely scheduling for the Resident meals and taking medication.

I also received regular

communication through email regarding her health and residency condition. They also informed me whenever there is medical procedure she requires.

They sent me Resident/Relatives Meeting Invitations and Meeting Notes, which is important for me to know what is going on at Care Home.

Despite recurrent shortages the staff do an excellent job often working well beyond their basic hours and duties. Eating requirements have become more complex and demanding than in the old days so the catering staff do their best to meet these challenges but naturally it is impossible to achieve 100%.
There is generally a happy atmosphere in the home and the staff are very caring.

I was very apprehensive on my father having to go into a home, but he moved in to fern gardens last December 2024 and I can seriously say that my mind was at rest,
What ever time of day we turn up to visit my father the home is clean all staff are very friendl and will always speak to us if we have
any concerns or need any updates on his health or medication.
My father can be very challenging at times but know that he is always well looked after so feel happy to leave him with his carer who is looking after him.
He has been on a number of outings, which I'm sure he has enjoyed as the photos that are put on the website show how much fun they are having.
Reply from Harry Inglis, RM at Fern Gardens Care HomeIan - Thank you for your kind feedback. It is gratifying to learn that you have felt that our push to take residents outdoors with our new minibus had made a difference.

When I arrived to visit my grandad, there was no one on reception to greet me and let me in. When I managed to attract someone's attention I was quickly shown to the area I needed to go to. The staff all seemed friendly and said hello to me, but I was disappointed to see the communal TV showing you
tube reruns of Britain's got talent. Not exactly appropriate for the elderly residents staying there. My grandad said "I don't think much of the music they play here". Is this something the staff like to watch? Surely it would be more appropriate to have age related programs, maybe BBC 3, ITV4 etc, or easy listening radio, eg smooth fm. My grandad seemed happy with the care home other than this. When I left, again there was no one on reception to let me out.

The staff at Fern Gardens are some of the kindest people I've ever met. I have seen my mum's time here improve her mental and physical health significantly. I am always informed by telephone how my mum is getting on, and when I visit, my mum is clean, happy and in a great mood. I am eternally grateful
to you all for everything you do. You are all angels!

My stepfather was there for 3 months. We found the whole experience appalling. Very low quality of care, in my opinion, we felt the place was not maintained properly or the staff trained enough for good quality of care.
We found it very difficult to communicate with the home. My opinion is 1/10

My mother has been in this care home for nearly a year now. It did take a while for her to settle in but she is doing ok now. I did request a move as mum's first room was very dark, she has got a new room now which is much brighter. The home is very accommodating, letting you make the room your own
with pictures etc. so I would like to say thank you for this. Any problems with the room the maintenance man is brilliant and will always come and help you. The majority of staff are fantastic, they seem to know all their patients individually and their needs. You will always get a very small minority of staff who are not as good, but this would be the case in all similar establishments due to staff cover and agency staff. The management and admin staff are very approachable and you can ask questions at any time. They also have regular meetings where you can bring up any concerns. When the home has events i.e. Christmas parties, summer barbeques etc., they really do excel, the entertainment and buffets supplied are brilliant, a good day is had by all. I think the amenities can still improve a bit, but I think this is an ongoing programme with decoration and new dining room etc. The daily activities programme is full but I am never there in the day to actually comment on this. My mum will always tell me she has done nothing! I know this is not the case. For patients who like to stay up later in the evening, I find they are just sitting in the lounge, maybe they could have someone still doing some sort of activity but I do understand it all depends on staffing. A receptionist in the evening would also be good but I do understand budget constraints etc. When I visit I always find mum is clean and comfortable and I am generally happy that she is being looked after properly. I would recommend this care home.

My mother has been a resident of Fern Gardens since November 2023. She has sight problems and a language barrier and overall she is not easy to deal with.
I am very impressed with the services that the members of staff of Fern Gardens provide my mother with. They are very professional, friendly and
able to adapt to the required needs.
The atmosphere itself in the care home is very nice. My mother regularly goes for walks with a staff member and is involved in some activities despite the fact that she is not able to see anything.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.128)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.128) out of 10 for Fern Gardens Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.438 for Fern Gardens Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (126 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (12 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 192 Ratings = 4.438
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.69 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Fern Gardens Care Home is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 92 registered maximum number of service users is 18.4. 15 Positive Reviews ÷ 18.4 = 0.815
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
