Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.833 for Westside Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (10 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 12 Ratings = 4.833

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 0 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westside Nursing Home is based on 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 0 = 0

    2. Target of 6 positive Reviews (30 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 0 Reviews ÷ 6 Target = 0

Reviewer Connection to Westside Nursing Home

  • Granddaughter of Resident/Service User

My grandfather Jack spent his last 3 months at Westside Nursing home. Initially when we transferred him there from hospital we felt saddened as he was no longer able to live his what had been fairly independent life due to his age and terminal illness. Nonetheless, he settled in almost immediately and I felt that this was down to the kindness and compassion of all the staff working there. Although he was very frail the nurses and support workers did their utmost to ensure he maintained his dignity and respect at all times and whenever we went to see Granddad he was always very happy, clean and comfortable. We were able to make his bedroom very homely with all his home comforts and (many, many) picture frames and we were able to take him out into the very large and very pretty garden (well maintained and with lots of beautiful bedded and pot plants). The rooms were clean and Granddad always enjoyed his meals there (a previously fussy eater). The kitchen staff were very friendly and they always worked hard and took pride in the food they prepared. We think he thought it was a hotel!
There was a sense of homeliness as soon as you walk through the door. It does not feel clinical at all. I believe that they are also due to decorate soon so this will make it even better. Had Granddad been more mobile, I'm sure he would have partaken in the activities that the events team put on for the residents or even enjoyed chatting to the residents who congregate in the living room.
We cannot thank all the staff enough for the kind care they provided to my Granddad. They were so friendly to all of us and made us feel welcome to come or call at any time of the day. I felt that they made a special effort to make us feel involved in Granddad's care (they appreciate that relatives can feel a sense of helplessness when their loved one is unwell).
The Matron, Mary was exceptional! She was always visible and accessible and you can tell that the staff thought a lot of her and they all seemed happy to be there! The nurses were also so compassionate, caring and professional. Needless to say, there is always a sense of guilt when leaving a loved one in a home but we always felt comforted that we knew he was being well looked after. Unfortunately, we did not make it in time to be with Granddad during his last moments but he was not alone, two support workers who Granddad knew well sat with him and held his hands and comforted him - for this we will be eternally grateful.
On behalf of my Granddad we were all very pleased with his care at Westside and couldn't recommend it highly enough.
