Burnham Lodge, offering nursing, residential and day care is housed in a splendid building dating from about 1900.

Located between Burnham, Maidenhead and Beaconsfield, it has been carefully and sympathetically restored to recreate a country house atmosphere, while providing a comfortable environment where it is easy for residents to continue to enjoy their individual way of life throughout their retirement.

Fully carpeted and centrally heated, the house offers a warm welcome. The lounge has magnificent views of the gardens. The newly decorated dining room is vibrant and welcoming to provide a delightful setting in which to enjoy freshly cooked meals, every day.

Burnham Lodges benefits from a bright conservatory, communal lounge and a dining room to enjoy the fully inclusive homemade meals.

Mum is well cared for at Burnham Lodge. She is comfortable and feels secure. Her needs are understood and catered for. The staff are quick to contact me if there is any issue or problem with mum that I need to be aware of.

The home was very festive during December and the staff made a real effort to make the surroundings cheerful and Christmassy.
Christmas lunch was excellent and the tables looked lovely.
The newly refurbished dining area made a real difference and there was a very welcoming atmosphere at lunch.
All
the staff had obviously made a big effort and it was much appreciated.

Management only given a satisfactory rating as in the process of change but the temporary management put in place was good.
The care home is in the process of decorating communal areas which have been done to a high standard and also empty rooms are being decorated and new furniture but existing resident
rooms are left in a shabby condition on occasions.
The activity person is very upbeat and tries her best but very often residents are left sitting around with no stimulus. Do not think activity lady should concentrate on one person.
Reply from Louise Chandler, PR & Communications Manager at Burnham LodgeThank you for taking the time to provide feedback. As you know, Hartford Care acquired Burnham Lodge in July 2017 and this has presented us with an opportunity to renovate the home to a high standard. We prioritise the comfort of our residents to ensure that they live in an environment that is safe and happy.
The dining room has been newly completed and the progress will continue with the cluster maintenance team working hard to refresh the look of the home. (We are very pleased that you found our newly decorated communal areas to be of a high standard).

Regarding activities, there are a variety of planned hobbies and interests that take place throughout the week, to cater to the different needs of our residents. Although, there are some residents who do not like to join in with group activities and staff respect their wishes. Therefore we provide a one to one option that is reflected in their care plan. The residents enjoy having day trips in our minibus and relatives are welcome to join us too. I would be happy to discuss any other questions you have in person. Kind regards, Registered Manager Catherine Emekwuo

The service, on the whole, is excellent. However, staff shortages have caused minor problems from time to time. A number of the staff are new and when up to the standards being set am sure such problems will be reduced or eliminated. Most of the staff have exceeded my expectation specifically on special
occasions like Christmas.
Reply from Louise Chandler, PR & Communications Manager at Burnham LodgeThank you for taking your time to review our care home. We are happy to know that most of our staff have exceeded your expectation specifically on special occasions like Christmas. We are also glad that you feel our service, on the whole, is excellent.
We are sorry that you feel that staff shortages have caused minor problems from time to time. However, I am pleased to say that we have recruited three health care assistants, one chef and one experienced registered general nurse who have now joined us at Burnham Lodge. The newly recruited staff are currently undergoing robust induction programmes and training so that we can continue to deliver high standards of care in line with our values of care, comfort and companionship. From the registered manager at Burnham Lodge.

This totally blind resident, in the 2 1/2 years of residency, has improved health wise enormously. The staff are very conscientious in announcing their names before attending to his needs. He now walks with the aid of a frame and guidance and at present he is experiencing the Charles Bonnet Syndrome
which the staff recognise. He is a practising Christian and joins in all the worship. The activities staff involve him as much as possible, he participates in all mental activities. He has formed a good relationship with management and acts as a spokesperson for the other residents. He is content.

In all, Burnham Lodge is very pleasant for a short stay and no doubt for long-term residence. Regretfully I can't comment on the food, except to say the menu looked appetising.

Burnham Lodge is very welcoming with its lovely building and grounds. All the people are wonderful (carers, nurses, reception, activities coordinator, cleaners, maintenance, kitchen etc) and have become good friends. They look after my father very well which gives the family great comfort and feel he
is safe. It's a pleasure to visit and be there. I would recommend Burnham Lodge happily.

Overall Experience 2.0 out of 5
My Aunt is currently a resident at Burnham Lodge and is frustrated by the poor quality food and how short staffed the home has become since it had new ownership. We have been told that things will improve but this has been going on for a long time- the food has decreased in quality and there are more
agency staff than ever. She is having to explain to some of the staff her care needs, and there are not proper handovers between staff shifts to ensure continuity of care.

We have attended many meetings where reassurance has been given but the problems are not being resolved.

It is a beautiful location and although the home's facilities and heating are in need of improvement these are not what makes a good care home. The home needs more well trained, organised friendly staff, alongside a food budget and kitchen resources to feed the residents with good quality meals.

We would appreciate your response and would be pleased to meet face to face to discuss our concerns.

Reply from Louise Chandler, PR & Communications Manager at Burnham LodgeThank you for your review and taking time to meet with us following this review.

By sharing with you the individual changes made to your Auntie’s care and support, we hope we have shown our dedication to providing excellent care to your relative and each individual in the home. When we met, we were able to discuss your concerns and provide feedback to answer your questions. It was nice to hear that you understood and appreciated some of the actions we have already made in the home by way of improvement.

To address each of the points you raised in this review:

1) Although there seemed to be a lot of agency staff in the home, we assured you that they were actually staff on temporary contracts whilst full-time recruitment is secured, and we have taken steps to invite them to wear our uniform to prevent any confusion.

2) We shared with you the minutes of the previous resident’s meetings as you were unable to attend and we hope this shows the great improvements and the positive responses we received from both relatives and residents in attendance.

3)We acknowledge that when we began to support Burnham Lodge, there were elements of the home that required our immediate attention, but this will be on-going as we continue to support the home. We hope you can see not only the physical improvements made to the home but also the great work the team is achieving.

4) We welcomed the suggestions you made at our meeting in relation to the food service and thank you for allowing us to show you the improvements that have already been made. We were also able to show you how we plan to monitor this moving forward.

We are grateful for your feedback as this allows us to continually improve and we invite you to meet with us as much as possible to see the positive improvements taking place at Burnham Lodge

Our mother has been a resident at Burnham Lodge for four years, after a period of serious illness, aged 100. From the moment she arrived, she felt happy and settled. As she was still mentally able, she really benefited from the activities and stimulation. She was always well-cared for and the staff
were kind and compassionate. The environment, rooms and meals were all of a very high standard. The magnificent grounds that surround the home are beautiful and our mother often loved to spend time in them during the summer months.
Our mother has passed away this month and we cannot thank the staff and home enough for their support in her last weeks. They have given round-the-clock care to an excellent standard. We were particularly touched by how attached they were to her and how personal their care was; it made a very difficult time for the family much easier to bare.
We will be eternally grateful and will cherish the memories that we have of our mother during her time at Burnham Lodge.

Burnham Lodge provided me with two week's post-operation care. During my time, the care staff and nurses provided considerable support, such that my visit was relaxing and stress-free. All meals were good with a choice of menu on a daily basis. In the two weeks, there was no repetition of the menu.

The home is set in eight acres of garden, mainly set to lawn, but well maintained. Under recent new ownership - the buildings are about to be redecorated.

After my mum leaving hospital we decided to look at a few homes around the area and after looking for the morning we decided that Burnham Lodge was the place for my mum to stay at. It's large spaces and friendly people, good atmosphere and good food but most of all was the health and care they took
very seriously. I said this is a good home for my mum and we were right, she's happy.

Visiting is allowed at any time of the day. All

15 months ago I came here with my husband for 2-3 weeks respite - could not have asked for a better home to live - food, staff, comfort, care. Naturally, when the time came I chose it from several, from my permanent home. Very sorry to find staff shortage, food budget obviously reduced and very different
from 2 years ago - very sad for such a lovely place and realise it is all to do with management and finance. Having said that Burnham Lodge is much better than most resident homes I have seen.
Reply from Aimee Bronock, Director at Burnham LodgeThank you for your review and we are sorry that you have felt that your permanent experience of our care home is so different to your first visit of two weeks respite with your husband two years ago.

We work very closely with CQC and CQC-approved advisors to ensure that our staffing levels are appropriate in accordance with current occupancy and dependency of residents. We continually review and amend our staffing rotas to ensure that we have CQC-required numbers of care staff on every shift as a minimum, often our numbers are above what CQC require in order to ensure that we can provide the best service possible. We review our staffing levels upon every new admission and whenever any existing residents' needs change.

We continue to work with the same award winning catering company that we have worked with for over 12 years, who design our varied seasonal menus to ensure healthy, nutritious, delicious (!) and varied meals are served daily, with plenty of choice at each meal. Everything is prepared and cooked on-site in our custom built, state of the art, kitchen, including the fresh cakes and biscuits served daily with afternoon tea. All of this is overseen by our head chef who has been leading the kitchen team for over 20 years, supported by an team of assistants. Like the NHS has been for successive governments, the food budget at our care home has been "ring-fenced and tied to inflationary rises"! We are very aware of how important delicious and varied meals are and as such we would never dream of buying anything other than the very best of local ingredients with which to work. We are proud that one of the consistent praises we receive is for the quality of our food so we are sorry that you feel the food budget has been reduced - we can assure you it has not. Residents have input into the creation of the seasonal menus at our quarterly meal planning meetings so any dishes that you particularly love please do mention to Chef at the meetings and he will be sure to add them to the menu. Residents can always choose something aside from what is on the daily menu - just let Chef or one of the servery assistants know and Chef will be happy to cook whatever you would like.

As an independent, family-run care home, we continually re-invest in our beautiful home in all areas, including staffing, training, catering, equipment, maintenance and we have a continual programme of redecoration to ensure that the Lodge and individual rooms, always look fresh and well presented. Our family's mantra has always been "Never run a Home, or let a Room, that You would not want to stay in yourself."

We thank you for your feedback and appreciate both the good and the bad as we continually strive to improve and offer the best service that we can. I do hope that you use the frequent residents meetings to voice any concerns or specific issues that you have in your living environment. I hope you are also aware of our company's 'open door policy' meaning that the manager, deputy manager, administrator and directors are available for your feedback at any time, as are all the care staff that you see on a daily basis.

My mother came to Burnham Lodge in January 2015 following a fall and extended hospital stay. She is treated well and the staff are kind, courteous and attentive. Activities are available daily until 4pm. The home is warm, comfortable and clean. Any illness or problems are quickly picked up by the nurse
in charge. During illness, food and drink intake is monitored to ensure the welfare of the resident to hasten recovery.
Reply from Aimee Bronock, Director at Burnham LodgeThank you for leaving your review. We are very proud of our nursing team at Burnham Lodge who between them hold a wealth of experience and exceptional practical nursing skills. As all our RGNs work 'on the floor' during each shift, they know each resident personally and so are able to assess any changes to health very quickly and in conjunction with our two regular visiting GPs, ensure that the correct medical response is provided to ensure a swift recovery

The nursing staff and reception staff are very good, however it appears the nursing management style is undermining the moral of the nurses.
Reply from Aimee Bronock, Director at Burnham LodgeThank you for leaving a review. We value all feedback in our endeavour to constantly improve the service we provide. We are pleased that on the whole you are happy with the care that you and your relative receive from us. All of our staff are valuable to us and one of our principle objectives is to have a happy and contented team, from the nursing staff to the domestic staff, so as to deliver high quality care in the beautiful surroundings we enjoy. We have regular staff meetings to make sure staff have a platform to discuss any issues they might have in order to ensure that they are happy, to find solutions to any problems they might have or to make suggestions for the improvement of the home and the care delivered.

My mother (85) was admitted in August 2016 as a result of a growing tumour diagnosed in her brain, initially for residential with the pending eventuality of palliative care.
Understandably Mum was somewhat apprehensive of moving into residential care. However, this very quickly became home for her
as she was made to feel very welcome in an environment of caring interactive staff who treated her with respect and friendship that in her own words " made her felt independent again".
I have everlasting memories of spending the last months walking with mum through the beautiful surrounding grounds, where I was reminded we had made the right decision as mum would tell us how she loved the people and place. On hindsight, we regret we did not do this earlier.
As mum's health declined, the professionalism of the nursing staff was first class as they took every step to make her palliative care painless and exercise empathy to allow the family to spend the unforgettable last moments with mum.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.726)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.726) out of 10 for Burnham Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.726 for Burnham Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (251 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 303 Ratings = 4.726
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Burnham Lodge is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2024

My name is Daria, and I’ve had the privilege of working at Burnham Lodge Nursing Home for over two years. I’m excited to support Burnham Lodge as a Deputy Manager and continue growing in my career. I've been a nurse for eight years, throughout my career, I’ve worked extensively in the learning disability and dementia care sectors, which has fueled my passion for providing person-centred care.

I love bringing smiles to people’s faces through outstanding care, which keeps me motivated every day. I’m particularly passionate about dementia care and wanted to work for an organisation where ‘people matter’.

At Burnham Lodge, my positivity and enthusiasm are not only supported but encouraged, and that makes all the difference.

While some days can be challenging, I always find moments that remind me why I love working in care—whether it’s a resident’s smile, hearing their life stories, or sharing an emotional moment with a colleague.

I’m excited to continue developing in this rewarding field and make an even greater difference in the lives of those I care for.
