Highfield is an established, largely purpose-built care home offering residential, nursing and dementia care. Its dedicated staff has been selected not only for their professional ability but also for their commitment to truly making a difference for the people in their care.

Resident’s rooms are spacious and all feature en-suite facilities (all have toilet and sink, some also have a shower). The communal areas are always busy – be it having a meal in the dining room, watching TV in the lounge, sitting in the garden or reading in the garden lounge area. There are no fixed visiting hours so friends and family can come and see residents at any time. You are always welcome to join for a cup of tea, lunch, on an outing or at one of the home's social events.

They have a chef who cooks all the meals from scratch. Breakfast is available in the dining room or in the resident’s bedroom. Residents can eat whenever they wake up in the morning and can choose between anything from cereal to a full English.

Lunch is three courses (starting with a nutritious soup) and the evening meal is a choice between sandwiches or a hot dish such as pasta or quiche. They have snacks available should anyone feel hungry at any other time.

They also serve drinks four times per day in addition to meal times (but staff will always make a drink for anybody at any other time and there is a coffee machine in the reception area).

Activity is at the heart of wellbeing and they have a full-time activity and wellbeing co-ordinator who makes sure there is always plenty to do, this includes regular trips on the minibus. Residents love going to the garden centre, shops, museums and the beach in the summer.

Mum has been in Highfields Care Home many years and we have consistently had to be on the case of her basic care needs with the management. Care workers are constantly reminded to ensure simple routines and tasks relating to her care are done. They are also asked to let us know if she needs anything
but never do. Whilst a key few are very good, many of them are are often indifferent, fail to introduce themselves or speak to mum when carrying out general care tasks and only do things when reminded to do so or asked to do
If we were not constantly reminding or visiting often, I dread to think how mum would be as she cannot ask or do anything for herself. She is generally cared for, clean and medically monitored but many basic requirements specific to her are often forgotten on a daily basis and we frequently have to raise concerns with the management team.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. It is disappointing that you feel some of the team are indifferent. We have had previous discussions, and this has been fed back to our team, and we have made robust changes to our processes as a result. As you know, my door is always open for residents and their relatives, and we will always welcome feedback to ensure we're delivery the best possible care to those living with us.Please do call in to see either myself or the deputy during your next visit if you would like to discuss your feedback further.

Such wonderful, smiling and attentive staff. My mother is in good hands. The cleanliness at Highfield is very impressive as must be a challenge at times. The food is delicious and well varied too. There is always a pleasant atmosphere in communal area for the residents.

My mother moved to Highfields 2 May after a part replacement hip operation. The following day the home had a VE day celebration party an I was so surprised to see Mom joining in, sitting up smiling and waving a flag. It was so welcome after a distressing stay in hospital.
My mom has been here nearly
4 weeks now. The level of care she is receiving is first class. Nothing is too much trouble and I feel well supported too. At all times, Mom is treated with dignity and respect.

Highfield Care home, has been home for my daughter since 27/04/2023. These two years past so quick it is a very friendly home, safe, clean, smells good. All the staff carers, nurses, admin, manager domestic, host are very nice, friendly and caring my daughter is very happy when any of the staff come
to talk to her. They enjoy her smile, laughter and happiness when they talk to her. You feel it is like a home more than an institute, and in a lovely place.

My aunt has been at Highfields for almost three years. The manager and staff are amazing. I live outside the UK and visit a couple of times a year. But I phone in several times each week to catch up with my aunt. The staff are always friendly, helpful and let me know how my aunt is doing. There are
numerous activities for residents. When I visit, the staff never mind what time of day I show up. They are welcoming. I'm always offered a cup of tea (which is appreciated). What is most important to me is 1) my aunt has settled into Highfield and is well looked after and 2) if there are any issues at all (for example she gets a cold) the staff inform me. The team at Highfield schedules time with residents' families, welcomes us to different events and we can even attend activities. Personally, I'm a fan of the yoga/movement classes! Everyone at Highfield is kind, caring and compassionate. I have peace of mind knowing my beloved auntie is well looked after.

Thank you so much for your review. We always strive to give the best care we can to our residents and their loved ones. It is so nice hear that your aunt has settled at Highfield and that the staff are welcoming and offer you a cup of tea - very important! All our residents are individuals with colourful lives and that shouldn't stop when they come to live in a care home - we appreciate things change but we always want to give our residents a welcoming home to feel safe and where they can explore the things they are interested in.

My partner has been a resident of Highfield for almost 2 years. In this time he has built up a nice relationship with the majority of the staff here. They come across as friendly and approachable, and I feel as though I can approach any of them with any concerns if need be.
In my mind, he is much happier
in himself since coming here, he doesn't leave his room that often which is his decision, but he knows there is always somebody close by if needed. If we sit in reception area there is always a few people that stop for a while and chat, which is lovely. Also if you don't fancy what is on the menu they are more than happy to cook something else for you.

My cousin is a resident of Highfield. I am no expert but the staff appear to be well trained and caring under firm but friendly management by the Manager and Deputy. Medical issues have been attended to promptly with a doctor in attendance when necessary. My cousin and I are satisfied and often impressed
by the care and consideration he is given. In particular, the way in which residents and their families are encouraged to voice their opinions on how the home is run, the activities provided, the food served and anything else they want to say either by themselves or in regular meetings. The management reacts positively to these views and also ensures that any remedial action is well known.

Highfield looked after our dad brilliantly.
The staff were so caring and went above and beyond in their care.
They are very welcoming of visitors.
We particularly appreciate the opportunities for residents to go out on visits, including the pub.

Dad spent the final two years of his life at Highfield Care Home, which was a surprise as he’d always said he never go and live in a care home. But he settled in well, and as it turned out, he actually loved finding a second family among the staff there, always ready to hear about the ups and downs
of each other's lives and to crack a joke when times were tough. They are a great team, and the care Dad got was exceptional.
Dad sadly passed away at the home, but he did so peacefully and in comfort. We can't thank the home enough for all they did for him. Including actually improving his quality of life by sorting out long-standing problems like leg ulcers and getting his cataract done, as much as being there for him as his health declined. The attentiveness and kindness he received were a revelation to us, just as much as it was to my dad.

My father was a resident for almost two years until his death in November 2022. He received a high standard of care whilst he was there. I felt extremely confident that my dad was being well cared for. There were a range of activities for the residents to enjoy and I know Dad enjoyed some of these,
especially visits to pubs and restaurants which were things he loved to do when he lived at home. The staff were very caring, especially as his family could not visit very often as they all live a distance away. This went a long way to give me peace of mind.

Highfield Private Care Home is situated in very pleasant surroundings in a quiet part of Saffron Walden. My sister has been in the home for almost three years. On entering the home you could think you were in a hotel. Everywhere is very clean and tidy. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and caring.
My sister is kept clean and tidy at all times and always looks nice in her clothes. There are various activities taking place such as bands playing, yoga sessions and outings. A beauty therapist visits the home on a regular basis and is available to residents who wish to take advantage of her services. A chiropodist also visits the home on a regular basis. My sister particularly enjoys the meals; the menu is varied and residents are asked to make suggestions. There are excellent nurses onsite 24 hours each day. The manager and his office staff are available to offer help and support whenever needed. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff!

I can not praise the staff at Highfields highly enough. The care, attention and love they show my Father in Law is second to none. The home is run very efficiently by the manager, helped by staff in the office. The nursing staff are so caring and empathetic especially two staff members who are a major
part of my Father in Laws team and look after him extremely well. The food is excellent, normally delivered by the smiling and warm staff member. Highfields has such a happy and warm feel about it, everyone is happy there. I must give a special mention to the maintenance guy, he works so hard and nothing is too much trouble for him.
Overall Highfields is 5 star.

The quality of care and personal approach starts with the Manager and Deputy Manager. They are kind, caring and sensitive. They are easy to talk to, and always have their door open, making it easy for relatives to go in and chat. They set the tone for the care that is found throughout the home. The
nurses and carers are usually the same from week to week, probably because they are full-time, means that Mum can build a relationship with them and we can do the same. Two staff members stand out as people that we have spoken to regularly. The lady who brings round meals and tea/coffee is also friendly.

My mother has now been a resident of Highfield Private Care Home for the past 8 years.
In that time she has been well loved and looked after by all staff and management which has had a variety of changes over this period.
As a family we are extremely pleased to find Highfield from half a dozen homes
we viewed.
If anyone is looking for a care home for their loved ones I can recommend that this one will not be beaten.

All the staff are friendly and helpful. They maintain the dignity of the residents and know the families well. They are courteous always. Some of the fabric of the care home needs updating and this is an ongoing programme. There is an ongoing issue with recruiting and securing an activities manager
but this is currently being met by the care staff to some degree.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.334)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.334) out of 10 for Highfield Private Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.684 for Highfield Private Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (86 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 114 Ratings = 4.684

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.65 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highfield Private Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.75

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Hello, my name is Aaron and I am the Home Manager at Highfield. I understand the anxiety you might be feeling as you look for a care home for a loved one. It is a massive change for everyone involved and takes a great deal of adjustment. We are here to support you through all of this.
Coming to live in a care home often leaves people feeling that they are giving something up. It does not have to be like this. We provide companionship and guidance to help residents continue to do the things they enjoy. As Home Manager I want to make the transition as easy as possible for everyone .
Highfield is their home. Residents can choose to mix with others as much, or as little, as they wish. Life goes on as normal with visits to church, supermarkets, and the local pub garden.
Contact with family and friends is essential for well being and we encourage you to get involved in our community. You are always welcome to join us for lunch and we have regular social evenings. We do not have fixed visiting times so you can visit whenever you wish.
I am a Registered Nurse, specialising in mental health. We know that physical and mental health are connected and you cannot have one without the other. We help with the practical aspects of daily living, but also help our residents maintain self-esteem, self-worth, engaged minds and active bodies.
Finally, there is lots of laughter at Highfield. You will hear lots of laughing and joking whenever you visit us. Whatever is happening in the world, a good belly laugh always makes things feel a little lighter and easier to cope with.

All the Team here at Highfield look forward to welcoming you soon.
