Since arriving at Abbots Barton my uncle has consistently received quality care, his original plan was to stay for two weeks respite. However, he has been so happy with the home and staff he has decided to stay permanently. He found the staff to be courteous, compassionate and caring. What could have
been an anxious, stressful time for him was made easier, as a result of the support he received. We are very happy that he is in good hands. Rooms are clean, bright and airy with plenty of room and daily activities and entertainment that are fantastic. The excellent menu he's found to be an added bonus.

To some extent, it is hard to judge as we have nothing to compare it with, and because of isolation, we were unable to join in any of the activities or explore the facilities.
I have enjoyed my stay here and am very impressed with the physical care I have received, especially as you have achieved
so much more contact than I have with my GP in years! I know lockdown did not help but the respite care has been a marvellous help to me.

My mother has been a resident of this Care Home for over four years. I rang on 17.03.2020, to ask for an update from the Nursing team about my mother's current health status, to be told: "she didn't complain of no pain or anything" (quote). As my dear mother has been in a vegetative state for many
many months with absolutely no verbal communication, no eye contact, no signing; this was nothing but a casual uninformed comment, in essence, a fob off! How a member of the Nursing team at Abbotts Barton Care Home, Winchester thought I would find a guesstimate reply sufficient hurts, it was and still is deeply unacceptable and insulting. If your Nursing staff are uniformed, they should refer to the individuals' medical notes. You are Service Providers, charging 'some' a lot of money for Care and a Service, this is yet another issue. Your motto 'Cherishing You' requires room for improvement. Internally generated postal card reviews are likely to follow 'a complaint'.
Reply from Elaine Farrer, Operations Director at Abbotts BartonThank you for your comment and feedback. We are sorry that you did not feel communication with the home was satisfactory in the instance you refer to in your review. As you know Colten Care and yourself had a number of challenges, particularly around communication, whilst your mother was in our care. Having investigated the comment further it appears there has been a misunderstanding during the telephone call regarding the pain assessment. We are confident that the staff team, who cared for your mother, knew that she was not in any pain at that time. We are also confident that the team was able to recognise if your mother was in pain at any time. We are sorry that you didn’t feel able to share this complaint with the home directly.
The review score submitted is not indicative of other reviews or comments posted on carehome.co.uk. Your views about Abbotts Barton are not shared by others using this platform. We worked closely with your mother's joint power of attorney and professional agencies, including our regulators, who have endorsed the home for the high standard of care provided. The scores associated with the management and treating individuals with dignity are not scores associated with the home. We have every confidence in the home’s management team. The feedback we have received from others, reassures us that individuals are treated with dignity and respect. I am sorry that we have not been able to have a more amicable relationship with you whilst your mother was a resident with us.

After our elderly mum had a hospital stay, nursing care was needed for several weeks before she was able to get back home. Not only has she been cared for very well they have also cared for our dad during his extensive visiting time which we have greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all staff from management
to the lovely ladies encouraging activities, the nursing staff were kind and considerate of mum's needs and they both enjoyed the meals. A superb home and we as a family thank you all.

Very welcoming on admission to redecorated attractive room with flowers and a welcome card - appreciated! Came in on respite care now permanent and finding it difficult to settle. The staff are very friendly and caring, but sometimes the wait when needing the toilet is difficult but realise many residents
need 2 carers at a time as my husband does and have complex medical needs. Lovely not to hear continuous bell ringing all day as can happen in other homes.
The garden and "garden club" we used and enjoyed by ourselves and other residents. Usually a quiet, friendly atmosphere. Thank you to all the management and staff.

I have been here for 2 1/2 years and in that time this has been my home. I am contented and have become used to the routine and the staff who are helpful, cheerful and discreet. Visitors are always made welcome and my daughter is pleased I am in a safe place. The team in charge of entertainment work
hard to find ways to keep residents happy. My pre-lunch sherry is something I enjoy with the opportunity to meet other residents, mid-morning and afternoons, tea and coffee are provided. I consider myself lucky to be here in my old age.

I thought it would be difficult for you to live up to the glowing recommendations I had heard from people whose parents are with you. In fact, you have exceeded our expectations.
My mother arrived at Abbotts Barton lonely, exhausted and stressed and after just a few weeks, she's back to her old self.
She's eating better, enjoying the company and keen to join in with the activities and repeatedly stresses how kind all the staff are. Thank you.

Very impressed with every aspect from first impression to accommodation and lovely gardens. All staff and management friendly and caring. Lovely that residents can invite visitors for meals and coffee/tea. The newspaper service is a good idea. The welcome flowers followed by the "thank you for staying"
flowers are a joy. The activities are very good and mum particularly enjoyed the outings with picnic provided. Hair salon is also excellent. Do good to have lovely baths. Wonderful.

We were invited to lunch with a resident and were delighted to be served in the sitting room so we had privacy. Our 'waiter' was extremely attentive to us all and took particular care of our friend. The meal was superb and an excellent choice was available. Our friend is very happy living there. Thank
you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.767)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.767) out of 10 for Abbotts Barton is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.792 for Abbotts Barton is calculated as follows: ( (203 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 236 Ratings = 4.792
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbotts Barton is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
