I cannot thank the team at Wessex Lodge enough for the kindness and care they showed my father in his last days. It made the experience one that was calm and peaceful, and for that I will be forever grateful.

Review from M S (Friend of Resident) published on 23 June 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

A beautiful and very dear friend spent her final weeks at Wessex lodge. Her room was impeccable and they allowed friends and family to decorate it however we chose to. The staff at this care home went above and beyond, my friend was well cared for, always clean and tidy. The food was also great and family/friends are able to stay for a meal with their loved one for a small fee. Wessex lodge has long term residents who are provided with a varied entertainment schedule. It was a bonus to be able to use the outdoor space to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The end of life care provided was kind and compassionate. Medically trained staff were available to ensure that symptoms and pain were kept under control as much as possible. Wessex Lodge has some incredible staff who managed to comfort us during the darkest times and treated us like a part of the Wessex Lodge family.

Overall Experience

My son kindly drove me from Hertfordshire to visit my brother in Wessex Lodge. He is a resident following many strokes. In a very bad way, but with excellent care, he is surviving. We were very impressed with the lovely welcome we got - we arrived unannounced because I did not dare let them know in case things changed. My husband is in care in Herts after a bad fall, and he can't walk. My brother was much better than I expected. His carer helped him with his coffee - we were also welcomed with coffee. A 2 1/2 hours drive I may not be able to do again. The home is excellent, and so are the staff!

Overall Experience
Our experience of Wessex Lodge so far is fine ish but no more than that. There are some members of staff who are exceptional but there is quite a serious issue with weekend staffing that has never been rectified.
Agency staff sadly are a lottery and there have been times when I was alarmed upon visiting which I found upsetting. With some of the more serious incidents, which I reported, the response was lacklustre which was disappointing.

I think if you're a fit and able resident looking for company then Wessex Lodge is probably very good but if you or your relative is requiring permanent care and an environment that supports this, then I think there are probably other homes better suited to this.

Generally good experience most of the staff are helpful and friendly.

Experience is slightly different each time, depending on the staff that are working.

A few regular faces, but staff seem to change quite frequently.

Rooms are Generally clean and tidy, only had to point out issues a couple of times but then they are fast to rectify.

Good activities that residents are encourged to join in with and make everyone feel included.

Communication is good and we are kept up to date with falls and general health.

I have been a resident since August 2024 and am well cared for here. I was thoroughly spoiled on my birthday in February; and more generally the standards are excellent. We get good quality food with plenty of choices and the healthcare staff are thoroughly professional. The staff are very friendly and I feel very lucky to be here. The room I am in suits my needs.

My darling father spent his last few weeks at Wessex Lodge. We never wanted for him to go into a home, so emotions were running high. There was a minor issue with his room on the first day, and this was resolved within minutes. Every day we got to know more and more of the staff, who were fantastic. They were so friendly and caring to us, as well as my father. My advice (to anyone else finding themselves in this situation) would be to get to know all of the staff, - cleaners and admin, carers and nurses. The more you give the more you get. They all work so hard, and although there are some stressful moments for everyone (which is understandable given the circumstances of the home and its residents) they are all genuinely lovely people who want to make the residents as comfortable and happy as they possibly can. Thank you to the whole team for allowing my father to travel through his last weeks with dignity, in a place that was the next best thing to his home with his beloved family.

From the first time visiting the carers/staff and the residents were happy. There is always a lovely atmosphere and a homely feel. The staff not only go above and beyond for the residents but also for visiting family and friends. I have complete peace of mind when I leave knowing my mum is happy and being well cared for.

My nana went into Wessex Lodge nursing home in September 2023 after a bad experience at a previous home.
Wessex Lodge is an absolutely outstanding nursing home, myself and my family can’t fault it at all. It was hard getting my nana settled there but they made sure to make her comfortable and happy at all times, they spent one on one time with her settling her and were always more than happy to answer any questions we had (at that time it was a lot)
Every single member of staff in Wessex Lodge works incredibly hard, the nurses and carers would go above and beyond for my nana and we see that every time we’re there. They treat my nana like their own and for that we as a family will be forever grateful. When we leave our nana we don’t feel anxious or worried because we know she is well taken care of.

The manager is lovely and is everything you’d want out of a manager, we couldn’t fault anything at Wessex Lodge.

I did not initially choose this care home as my father is currently under the NHS Delirium Care Pathway and was discharged to the next available place.
However, I was so relieved when I first visited to find such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, great staff (medical, care and admin) and all areas clean, fresh and tidy.
I was immediately confident that he would receive the best care, tailored to his needs and this has, indeed, been the case. He informs me that the chef is open to requests for extra bacon sandwiches for breakfast!
There are daily activities to suit all tastes (who knew visiting alpacas would be so popular!) but absolutely no expectation to join in if you don't want to.

It appears that my father will need continuing care and I will certainly be making enquiries for him to stay at Wessex Lodge.
